Hah! So! Still in that always-longer-than-expected period of "just about wrapped up" on the Pete episode, but here are some breakdowns of some shots I've been working on, and a couple mini tuts on hot glowing metal and basic tire rigging. Idk if you still have the computer issue but I had a similar problem with my pc shutting down everytime I used blender and it turned out it was my motherboard causing the issue. Motherboards can often go bad overtime. After I got a new one everything worked.

Don Perkins

wow.. a smorgasbord of knowledg! Thanks for sharing so freely with us!

Hey, does anyone know how to avoid flickering in final renderings? I noticed that this guy is getting some of them (https://youtu.be/IRJ7K3fd6Mg), but Ian’s renderings look so clean, can someone give me some advice here? Thanks

IanHubert

Ah yeah! That kind of flickering is the result of not having enough samples before denoising. Under the render settings, increase the Max Samples for the render. Unfortunately, that comes at the price of longer render times (and more electricity for your GPU), so while you can just brute force crank the samples, instead I usually try to reduce the number of samples I need to begin with. This video talks about a lot of it: https://www.patreon.com/posts/optimizing-66223950

IanHubert

AH YEAH! Huh- what about parenting the lattice to the "Shrinkwrap" bone instead of the wheel bone, so it's always flush with the ground?

Back To Eden - VR

It's complicated, I tried once with 4000 samples and still getting the flickering, I got an RTX GPU and I thought it would fix it when you use optiX denoiser, but nothing changed, feels like universe doesn't want me to have nice renderings, what about the format? do you export pngs or there's a better file format for finals?

Evan Barron

So excited for the random building generator asset! I could really use something like that for some of my projects :D

Zeke Faust

Javier the best format for final (final in terms of coming out of blender and going into compositing) is EXR! Much more flexible and efficient than png

After Years of me using PC and Loving it for just about everything, those new M2 Macs are really starting to pull me in. I have a basic M1 imac at home and its crazy how blazing fast Resolve is on it. Editing both Raw URSA and Pocket6k footage on my PC can really make it chug. I decided to do some edits at home and the M1 handles the footage with little to no lag. (base M1 still isn't great with 3D and has crashed a few times. I've seen good things about M1 Max and ultra) Curious if you too have thought about a Mac for handling some processes? Also, convenient tire tutorial! I was just trying to animate a Dirt Bike the other day and was WAY overboard on controls for the tires lol

IanHubert

Cool!!! Yeah I'll have it out by the end of the week! :D

Mahdi Poursamad

Great video, your work has inspired me so much, you're the reason I started learning blender 2 years ago. I'm a 16 year old artist from Sydney and it mean the world to me if you checked out my 1:30 min reel! https://vimeo.com/730518153

Dekker

hope u survive the heat

IanHubert

Dang, yeah!!! Rad visual style! That opening sequence was especially cool!

Mahdi Poursamad

I really appreciate, if you ever need a hand I would be happy to do some free work for the experience

Kai Christensen

Excellent video, I can't believe how quickly the Pete and Sterling episodes are coming along! It's fun to joke about "haha it takes so long for Ian to upload" but in the end you're making insanely good time for the amount of work you're doing dude, keep up the awesomeness. Thanks for sharing your discoveries with us all along the way!

Raffo VFX

Ian these breakdowns are really interesting. Also it always impress me how you explain some concepts saying like "nothing special, but I thought I would share this" when instead to me its a really outstanding concept. And so, go on sharing things even if they are not useful for the common people :) Also, your patreon is the most cool thing in the world, really feels like being there observing and learning what you do.

fab4_Blender

Very good video, like everyone you publish here in Patreon I wanted to ask you if you have considered making a video of how to use the AI tools that exist: Dally E2, Midjourney, to accelerate the workflow in the creation of an idea, either taking the idea of concept art, or textures, or backgrounds, or possible ideas of models of models

Massimo Vendola

I think I've seen you post this on reddit first? Your work is insane, you're gonna go far.

Tim Szabics

That tire/lattice trick solved a problem that has been scratching at my inner thoughts to where I’ve found myself lying awake at night. And like an Angel ascending from the clouds, the face of Ian brings yet another answer that a mere peasant mortal like myself can understand. And now, I can sleep again. Thank you! Lol.

Door Monster

I somehow always have the same problems you're having at the same times - my PC issue turned out to be old thermal paste that needed replacing.

Nathan Vegdahl

As someone who was at the Blender Institute when they implemented mesh deform: I totally agree. If you can get away with using a lattice instead of mesh deform, you 100% should. Mesh deform has a lot of weird limitations, and is also generally slower. When you really need it, it's great to have. But IMO it's actually fairly niche--you can usually accomplish what you want in other ways.

Jay Gonzalez

i love watching your videos, i ALWAYS pick up new tricks and techniques.. thank you for doing what you do Ian keep up the AMAZING work man !

VonDöhner

Modular Buildings ASSET? May I ask how long until it gets released, because I'm working on a scene right now where I could really use something like this but when it takes like two weeks 'till its coming I'm just gonna build something myself. EDIT: Forgot to say: Great Video as always, one really does get used to this exceptional quality really quick;)

Mark Miller

Great stuff as always. The van looks awesome! I love the bulging tires. I experimented with orienting the bone/lattice to the ground surface normal so that it looks good on hills as well. Haven't played with that car rig to see how easy it would be with that.

Mark Miller

I also tried your glowing thing using real black body temperature (control the temperature gradient via the gradient texture). I felt like the fall-off was more natural.

IanHubert

OH WAIT- did that work for you??? That was what I wanted to do, but for some reason it didn't seem to be working on my end! That's cool :D

IanHubert

OH- because the gradient just goes 0-1, and it needs to be, like, 0-1500 or something :P

Mark Miller

Yeah. I multiplied by 10000

Thomas Sturm

Awesome video - the amount of useful information you can pack into a 20-minute video is always amazing. I really like those breakdowns since your (near) final shots are usually so full of interesting details. Whenever I'm frustrated with Blender, there is another of your videos to pick me right back up. Thank you!

Mark Miller

I should also note that you have to deal with the fact that zero degrees is still red. I was most successful using the gradient to modify strength as well, using the square of the value to even out the falloff. I tried some other stuff too, like multiplying the color by the gradient to get black outside the sphere.

Jules Otway

I don't know if you've heard of the YouTuber 'DIY perks' but he had a great video about salvaging Fresnel lenses from broken TVs to create light panels that emit parralell light, imitating the look of actual sunlight. Might be a useful project if you need to replicate sunlight on a greenscreen with more control than natural sunlight.

Stephan

Great vid. When the Blenderesse car rig came out the other day my one lingering thought for how to apply it to a scene I'm working on was 'but how do i make the tires squish...?' This was perfect.

Nick Sushkevich

I remember we order some custom explosions from Detonation Films for our movie. I looks like he set them on a roof to avoid the skyline of his property )))

Henry Lightfoot

how can i parent objects to my car in the Blenderesse geo nodes setup???????

IanHubert

That’s the one problem I’m having too :P

IanHubert

I think you could drag a new collection into the geo nodes setup and attach them to the van pretty darn easily- I’ll see if I can figure it out!

Henry Lightfoot

Ohhhh that seems promising… I opened the geo nodes editor and it scared me so I didn’t think of that :)

Eliot Mack

It would be fantastic to see a setup tutorial on how you are integrating live action/CGI now that you have the ETF tools. I saw in the previous ETF video how you generated a log sensor response curve, and it would be great to see that carried through and applied to a piece of log footage that is then composited with a scene lit with the matched HDRI.

Ninja Nolan

I would make the explosion a little brighter. Something about it looks off to me.
