Finished the last shot (first pass, anyways) of the Pete episode today! Very exciting! And okay- from watching other folk's animations, I'm not the only one who has trouble with this; just some quick thoughts on animating big and little stuff!

Just saw this and learned about your Camera Shakify addon. Too cool!

Rene gabicho

hi ian can you please help me im trying to install the add on shakify but it says that "cannot import name action slot from bpy.types unknown location" module not found error,, i cannot install it please help, I am using blender 4.1 and installing camera shakify 4.0

Ian ur an actual legend. Jumped out of bed to watch this. I’m stoked

Jed

Would you ever release the project files for Dynamo Dream or maybe just some more unedited videos of you working on shots. Personally I really want to learn more about world and ship building

Elia

Thank you for turning your sandwich’s energy into this video 🙏

Dyrgrip FX

Great explanation Ian! Things like this may seem obvious but you broke it down in a great way of keeping it in your mindset while working. Thank you!

IanHubert

Oh! Huh! The project files themselves tend to be crazy messy (as is the process of me working on shots, in general), but I made a bunch of videos about the process! https://www.patreon.com/posts/47774565 This one goes through basically the whole process of making a vehicle, https://www.patreon.com/posts/making-shot-in-37501621 And I think this one is a reasonably unedited video of going through the making of an entire shot. I'll be uploading a post with links to each of the 100+ videos I've uploaded here in a bit; hopefully'll make it easier to find videos without having to wrestle with patreon's search function!

Great little tid-bits. I’ll use sfx when going over sketches with my tattoo clients and it always causes funny looks 😂 Sometimes there’s no better way to convey the intensity and mood!

IanHubert

Haha!! I love that! And yeah!! Especially with animation, it's the "rhythm" that makes it feel really rewarding, and it's so much easier to find that rhythm if there's some sort of audio aspect!

fluid

Really good stuff Ian. I was actually working on something that needed an extra push. Grantastic insights! ( Cause Fantastic would'nt have enough energy somehow)

Nathan Vegdahl

I just want to take a moment to point out that Ian is constantly claiming he's not a particularly good animator. I feel like this video is good evidence to the contrary! "If you're making the mouth sound effects, that usually means you're on the right track." Word.

ModelMeals

I really can't wait to see the pete episode. Everytime you've shared a bit of the fight in your IG story I've showed it to any and everybody standing around me and gushed hard.

Avolendi

Cool :) Interesting to see the details of this and might come in handy

Zeke Faust

My artists used to make fun of me for doing mouth sounds while we worked, but once I explained the reasoning it actually started to catch on :D It of course helps give you a sense of how an effect will play when it's in the final mix, but it also serves to remind you that the VFX shot is not an isolated object, but a part of a much bigger piece of art!

IanHubert

Bahaha thanks man! Yeah I can do mostly-physics type stuff alright, but if I tried to animate the hand itself stuff would get real weird real fast :P

Pete Burges

This is a really interesting post! I've been animating for 25 years and there's ideas in here I hadn't really considered before. You keep claiming to be a poor animator but that really doesn't hold up at all. You've been doing it day in, day out for years so it's statistically impossible that you could still be bad at it, even if you didn't have all these very convincing animations all over the internet. And you do what all good animators do, which is to really consider the physics of what you're animating and to learn from real world examples. Also, if I was new to it and someone as accomplished as you kept claiming to be bad at it, I'd probably feel really discouraged...!

Diego Nossa

Very useful tips in this Ian thanks! It's all about the physics! (and I hated physics in school ;( )

Hans Jacob Wagner

Just made me wonder how it would have been - being your teacher or classmate 🤣 anyway I love the outcome !!

"We are a part of the universe that can turn sandwiches into a ball-throwing good time" — Ian Hubert This should be a T-shirt on Qwertee.

Fannnn Tassstic! So many good morsels of info. Thank. You. Ian.

Dylnciaga

hey ian. I wish to be like you one day. so cool. Tacoma legend

David McSween

Wow, so many cool things to think about! At the end Ian, you suggest that big things don't need extra noise or fiddly animation which lends them weight. But I notice that noobs often make all their animation this way. Perhaps it works best (doing less animation) when there's a contrast to other elements doing more. Leaves blowing or people moving around in the foreground. It seems to me that this idea of "contrast" is everywhere... from composition of frame to composition of form (big little shapes), even color grading relies on it... as well as lighting and sound mixing. Damn it really is everywhere!

Maxime Gerardin

Thank you Ian for this super video as always ! I wanted to ask you, even tho it has nothing to deal with what you talked about here, but will you come to the Blender conference of 2022 (27-29 october in Amsterdam) ? Not necessarily to give a talk but to join as a spectator ? Would love to know, thank you very much and have a nice day!

Thanks, these energy transfer concept helped alot ;)
