Can't really think of a good title for this one! I've been having to finish a *lot* of shots lately, which in my case means implementing a bunch of photoscan. This is pretty representative of a lot of the work I did over the past month (though I'll be honest- in the next few months, I'm excited to be able to hyper-focus on singular shots instead of having to blast out a lot of them (lot of green screen stuff coming up)).

Dope we love the greenscreen stuff.// dopeman

IanHubert

Sweet! A hefty amount of greenscreen comin'! :D

Found And Explained

Great stuff. Quick Question how do you do horizons in a wide shot? Mist pass or a giant volume? Would love to know!

IanHubert

Yeah! Oh man, I haven't used a mist pass in years. In fact, I barely do anything with multiple passes anymore; for most all of 2022 I've just thrown a simple grade over the raw render, it's been wild! So yeah, usually I'll just have a giant volume that goes as far as I need it to. I've talked about it in other videos, but if it's an outdoor scene with reasonably even lighting (an HDRI or sun lamp or something), it tends to render pretty darn efficiently with the new CyclesX! It's when you're trying to do spotlights/beams that you run into trouble. Actually, if you haven't seen this video, you might find some stuff in it interesting! https://www.patreon.com/posts/blender-playing-58394456

Gabrial Wolf

Ian just messing/playing around is when all the fun stuff happens

Found And Explained

Haha me or Ian? I’m pretty sure you don’t follow me you need to reply to the right comment!

Mahdi Poursamad

What what this? It can't be! 2 videos in the same week!?

IanHubert

Haha! I'm glad you see it that way, I was more feeling, "Only two videos in a month??"

Mahdi Poursamad

I guess I'm a glass half full kind of guy! Amazing work on these videos tho, apart of learning new stuff it's nice getting progress updates on the show! Can't believe we have to wait for episode 2 to come out before we can see the Pete episode

noor hicaru

U r the only one i flow in patreon, thanks a lot bro 😎.BTW i sent u question in patreon would please c it?

noor hicaru

Its about how u blind texture with video footage that you projected, coz when i add something it’s hard to match it with the light , like what you did in your set extended tut when your wife standing near the cg phone outdoor

Simon Salord

Come on Ian ! "Bas relief"... "Bas relief"... C'est pas si difficile à prononcer que ça.

Richard Cave

thank you, just finished storyboarding my short film, lots of plate photos and photoscans going to be needed to complete it, you have given me confidence to go ahead and do it, awesome, base rilif

redishere

every time I see a Ian Hubert notification, I cheer! thank you for everything you do, can't wait to see the new episode(s)

DRUMMINGCYBORG .

The 🦞 enjoys too. You’re incredible. Thanks for all the tips in between your projects

illuskate

damn that was sick - I got a load of Drone scans from Wales (United Kingdom) that you might like/find useful - hmu

Sean O'Skea

Awesome as always. Quick question: I see you have a ton of scans in your Asset Browser, I know they are stored in outside files but is there any limit or performance hit or anything to the number of things in the AB? Thanks (or should I say Tanks?)

Otto H

I can't wait for that video on composition!

Tyler Adams

I still haven't touched the asset library/browser side of Blender. I know I would love it if you broke it down. Your way of teaching is very effective at cementing info in my brain! Cheers!

Nate

This was great! Love watching the creative decisions you make about lighting and composition! To me making shots look good is just as important as learning the nuts and bolts mechanics of Blender!

Evan Barron

I'd love to see a video that goes over the asset browser, as I haven't really paid much attention to it. I hope it's not too much of a pain to set up, as it really seems to make this workflow smoother and easier

Nikita

"I don't think people are going to notice that I'm using the same two people over and over again," — Ian, not realizing that in the future there may be monographs written scrutinizing every bit of his work.

Zach Hoy

bah! relief!

Paul Spooner

For how often you use the exact same volume haze settings, you should probably add it to the asset browser.

Paul Spooner

23:23 "It is so hot in here" task bar says it is 65F outside. First-world problems?

Dekker

23:50 is a perfect counter to AI art. The program could have created thousands of renders using hdris and a random assortment of photoscans, but it’s the human connection that matters the most for film. It’s a wonderful tool though..

Doug Brown

wonderful stuff... thanks Ian

Bo Maryniuk

What? Did I just hear you said "millimeters"? I was expecting Imperial stuff, something like "it is a couple of fly shits thick" or "a bit thinner than an average raindrop" or "It is as thin as a dollar bill, folded 20 times" etc.

Raffo VFX

interesting stuff as always. With polyicam, do you prefer using the video mode or the photo mode? Im curious

IanHubert

Oh! Well if I'm understanding you right, in Polycam specifically, those both implement the same technology (they're both considered "photo mode" (represented as "Auto and Manual")- video (Auto) mode just means it automatically takes pictures when the accelerometer tells it its moved a bit, as opposed to having to repeatedly hit the shutter button.) That said, the other mode is LiDAR, which - IMO- it's pretty worthless for most things (it scans crazy fast (and to scale, which is nice) but the average spatial resolution you can get seems to be about an inch). I feel like that's a confusing answer, but if you mess around with the app it should make sense.

Travis Park

When you said "so i bought one" i thought you mean an actual tank

Levy Bergman

Ian, I would love to see a full compositing video from you - combined with a full post production workflow 🙏

Michał Miłkowski

This! I still feel awkward when I'm trying to do color grading that don't feel mushy/too uniform and applying some camera/lens effects that don't feel too weird/digitalish

Ruihuang

Asset browser tutorial plz

VerseOfGrace.com

Inspiring to see how quickly you can make a stunning image. Keep it up :)

Olivier Netter

My MasterYour videos and your work have been a great help for that one year project I published today (https://youtu.be/c_jrqV5v1IU) thank you very much and stay tuned until the end, you are in the credits... and somewhere in the final sequence. Hope you enjoy the vizualisation.

Kepler Electronics

I literally didn't even know the asset browser existed! Thanks for mentioning that!

gingerbear haus

Ah good, so Im not the only one frustrated with the Lidar scan results, which I thought was gonna be awesome!

IanHubert

I know!!! At one point they said they had a mode that combined them, but either I haven't really figured out how to use it, or the difference is pretty negligible- I should try it out again, though.

Nikita

Seems that Ian tries to compose as much as he can in the scene itself. Bringing stuff in 3D takes out the guess-work necessary for believable compositing results.

Nikita

There're plenty of those on YouTube. No need to distract the master with mundane things.

Levy Bergman

Obviously he can't give a uniform compositing method since every scene is different and has different lighting and colors, BUT there are subtle techniques in his arsenal what he uses to achive that classic Hubert look.. We just got a small taste of it in the end of the Cyberpunk scene video, but there are much more tricks he knows, I'm 100% sure about it :)

2026-09-20 10:00 Serious tutorial on poly cam or what ever iOS app you use for photo scans. My iOS photo scans come out looking so wavy and messed up.
