Probably nothing you haven't seen before, but here we go! Lot of new footage to work with these days :D I'm going to be making a new video showing my new (slightly more)proper/linearized/keyed/tracked workflow pretty quick here! And the Optimizing Cycles video I mention:https://www.patreon.com/posts/optimizing-66223950

wiber faria

could you show me the step by step to remove the green screen from the videos and cut the unused parts of the green screen....thanks

DRUMMINGCYBORG .

Just finished your in rigging video and now this?!? Can’t wait! 🦾🦾

Mahdi Poursamad

New kind of vibe I see you've got going on here

Corban scheid

I am currently experiencing the HOLYCOWHOWTHEHECKDIDYOUDOTHAT!!!?? Syndrome.

fluid

Awesome! Your lighting seems nice and low key. Do you have a base formula for green screen work from a lighting perspective?

Paul Spooner

Lol. Big mood from "But I didn't go to bed..."

Zeke Faust

Legend has it he's awake to this day

Doug Brown

You make it look so easy. Love these modelling/texturing videos.

IanHubert

Haha!! I think it’s from the ceiling asset i posted years ago- I can repost just the jpg, though!

Genius

Stephan

These full process environment build videos are super great. Really helpful for learning, also entertaining. Thanks for the post!

Sariminator

these modelling videos are my absolute fav ian! could watch you modelling for ages and ages with ur clickity clacky keyboard

NickTricc

I’m pretty sure the reason you have problems with the UV-unwrap, might be because you haven’t applied scale! 🤔

Shawn Hawkinson

Ian, wonderful as always! Did you happen to record any of the detail work too? Would love to see some of that stuff! :)

DECODED

If you're still aiming for one shot per day, you should definitely get into the habit of using the mirror modifier more. It would save you a bunch of time on shots like this. I forced myself to start using it more recently, and I'm glad that I did.

anup giri

great video as always . i was wondering if you could make Some another videos of your process of adding details . :)

Luke Evans

Amazing !!!More please ! Even if it’s just you babbling

Fransoa

How did you get this kind of yellow text on the floor?

Fransoa

Thx… one more question:-) hiw did he get the doors just round or curved. Do you think he used a deformer to curve a plane?

DoubleUK

Thanks Ian, for letting us look over your shoulder, while you create these beautiful worlds. I was designing some this 'brutalism'-type of architecture the other day without knowing it was called that way. Thanks so much for the inspiration

Frank Frohnhoefer

Brutal and Beautifull "...AnD I DiDnT gO tO bED!" Killed me ;) We need a word for that situation - everbodys been there...

alex

Dope video! // dopeman out.

Hey Ian on the escalator shot at 37:06 theres flickering in his hair and on his shouder. I always have the exact same problem and i have no idea how to fix it. Any ideas?

David O'Sullivan

Great video! I always run into the same issue with green screen footage, and I can see it a little bit here. It's a bit of a relief to see the master dealing with the same issue haha. Starting at 37:06 the key in dark area of the elbow and forearm goes transparent, and I think the hair and shoulder does too. This happens to me every single time. Is this inevitable and you have to deal with it after shooting, or is there something I'm messing up while filming? Will you reshoot, or fix the current footage - and if you'll fix it how? I can accept it when I mess up and show a greenish logo or something, but patches of black clothes or hair going off is super annoying. I'm not sure if this is a 10-seconds-to-answer-question or a pain-in-the-arse question. If it's the latter, sorry!

Orion Vang

Thanks for all you do sir! These are always great to watch

Moosh3d

I am INCREDIBLY interested in your hard drive named "Laserbutt" haha. That gave me a good laugh. Great video! I watch these while eating my lunch!

Carter Burr-Kirven

Make sure you have a solid alpha! Faint holes in the alpha, like 98 or 99 percent opacity, might be invisible to the eye while you're keying, but will show up when something bright ends up behind them and pops through. Make sure to view your alpha directly a few times during the key. Putting a gamma correction on the mask is a good way to catch problem areas that might be invisible to the naked eye: gamma'ing way up will reveal areas on your greenscreen that aren't totally black, and gamma'ing way down will reveal areas on your foreground that aren't totally white.

George Moise

Thank you Ian! All I want to do is watch you model and texture things. I don't care if there's "nothing new" about the video. I don't want anything new!! Thx man

Richard Cave

needs a random insult to the architect, a beautiful space and some moron has put in a vending machine or something, to make it asymmetrical. You know the thing, it always happens a beautiful space and someone with no sense of design puts a notice up with sellotape it always happens.

Noneya D Biznazz

Just watching the windows clock in the corner and seeing time jump as you waffle on composition was hilarious. Did you pull an all nighter?

2026-09-20 10:00 Ian, will the original episodes of Dynamo be continued? I have so many questions about the story there.
2022-09-10 21:31

IanHubert

Yes!!! The shot is definitely missing that final layer. Where it’s at now is what it would have looked like 30 years ago- I’m excited to layer it up a bit!! Haha definitely a vending machine!

IanHubert

I’m not totally sure in which form (I still have dreams of wrapping up all the old footage we shot), but mostly yes! The new Dynamo Dream episodes are about to start overlapping with a bunch of the old stuff! Always drove me crazy that we never wrapped that up :D

IanHubert

Yes!! I’ll get more into it in a new video (I didn’t even notice the glitches till the test render), but I know it’s avoidable! In this case I hackily fixed it by using an RGB curve to crush the alpha channel, but I think the original problem is from “dilating” (or whatever it’s called) during the keying process, so every previously semi-transparent singular pixel suddenly has a big old semi-transparent border. I feel like denoising exacerbated it, too?? Anyways!! I’ll dig more into it!

IanHubert

Yeah!! I talked about this a bit lower down, but there are lots of ways to fix it (Carter’s point is excellent)- I’m going to make a keying video next week, I’ll put a bunch of thoughts in it!! It’s definitely an annoying issue, yeah :D

conorsvfx

that'll be great thanks! my work around atm is just making a core mask for my subject but that kinda defeats the whole point of the green screen because i still have to roto the whole subject. Can't wait for that video

rayzrsharp

Hi Ian! Amazing tutorial. Question, you may have answered this before... have you tried using Unreal 5? Just curious on your take in using it to construct your scenes. Thanks!

Emlyn j mitchell bates

i really like the videos where you just work on a shot for a couple hours i would love to see more

Mark Miller

I agree. I ALWAYS learn something new and cool that is some throwaway comment or keystroke I didn't know about.

DGCrafter

I love that your using brutalism as a concept to work off of, ive always been a fan of that kinda style

Eliot Mack

Really looking forward to the updated linearized workflow video!

TK

Okey man, you gotta do a total workflow on that greenscreen work, tracking in blender, blending etc for real!

Jeffery F

Hey Ian, thanks for another great tutorial! I was wondering if you linearized your keyed footage before importing it, or was it RAW linear footage you could just bring in? Thanks

2026-09-20 10:00 On episode 2 of ‘Chris loves that shot but can’t quite work out why’ - circa 1:20 of Salad mug when the focus shifts from the glass pane to the rooftops above. It’s definitely the shot that stuck with me the most. There’s a lot of feeling to it & it’s killing me that I just can’t work out why… Would love to see a viewport BTS screenshot of that setup but I don’t suppose I could find that anywhere!

AH! Thanks Chris! To me the funny thing about that shot is that my experience of creating it was the same as the character's; I was setting up the shot to look at the rain on the window, then noticed I still had the animation of the robot out of focus in the background, and I knew the shot *should* feature the robot, but I really wanted to show off how good the rain looked, so I put in the rack focus to split the difference. Which means, like, mechanically, it's just me hamfistedly trying to show off Alex Heskett's badass rain shader, but from a story standpoint it kinda quietly establishes that Jo's more in tune with the little things, and the outside world keeps butting in. There's some inspiration from Bong Joon-ho's "The Host" in there too, if you've seen that. It's a monster movie where one of the first proper times you see the monster it's initially quiet and obscured in the background, and it's eerie having something so important not wrapped in the usual "front and center" cinematic language. In the theater it was pretty unnerving :D ( https://youtu.be/vaxwv1rndPI at 1:33 ) BTS wise, it's literally just a little windowpane in front of the camera, with the rest of the scene behind it, and a little rack focus. (https://nuggetblends.gumroad.com/l/Rain_ that's the rain shader I used) It looks absolutely fantastic in basically every scene I've used it in, especially a tad out of focus. One thing we don't tend to do often with CG shots is film "through" things, like mirrors or panes of glass. A lot of "real life" cinematography involves happy accidents, exploring the location and finding angles, in a way that isn't as easy with CG, so I think we tend to set things up more "direct"- but I think it's a good reminder to myself to find ways to "film through" things- so thanks a ton for that! :D

Chris Alldridge

This really scratched an itch for me, so to speak! I remember you saying (think it was at a talk) that the reason your shots are as polished as they are is because you spend more time poking away at them- this adds another dimension though that I think is important to flag- it’s not just about composing a shot, but doing so to communicate something about a character - that’s what makes a shot stick with you and elevates it from beautiful to truly poignant. I suppose you cannot underestimate the value of serendipity! Thanks for such a compressive reply, I’m going to spend some time going through the links/suggestions; there’s much to be gleaned from this 😄

Can't thank you enough for making this awesome video. Sharing your experience and the best part: literally narrating each step and explaning why you took every decision in order to achieve a realistic environment. Trust me, I've seen countless videos about blender and is not common to see the ammount of valuable info I saw here, because many videos are focused in only one or two things like: how to model an airport chair. Lol. THANKS IAN! I'm building up my own structures with some random footage (green screen) I found on the internet. Lets see how that ends ;)

Fransoa

The problems with all my scenes: they are all looking like miniature scenes. I noticed that you are oft placing your camera on top like in this video showing in the down direction. Is it the secret?

Sean O'Skea

Sitting in SFO looking out at all the wacky vehicles out on the tarmac. We need to see some freeways pirates driving baggage jeeps or those ladder trucks. Next time you’re at SeaTac grab some references!

Juan AF

I love all your tutorials but in this case I can't stop watching it since minute 39 to the end on a loop. The two times you come back because you didn't go to sleep making changes are hilarious. I see myself so reflected that I don't feel alone XD Thank you so much

Miko Dela

Btw. This looks pretty much exactly as the Terminal 2 in Antalya, Turkey. And now, post-season it's pretty much just as empty.
