i keep making categories in "current file" then save said file in my main asset library folder (witch i put on another drive) all my assets show up but not any of the categories i created and when i try to create them and add the stuff back in it says i have to do that from within the "current file" so i'm not allowed to organize

John Austin

I was already going to create separate folders for materials and objects and so on but now it seems i'm going to have to break them down even more just so I can find things

John Austin

ok new version of blender fixed it

ColonD

you can add multiple OBJ's at a time with the True-Assets addon!

Bakamoichigei

omg, I spent countless hours making abstract crap in Bryce! If only I could be so easily impressed with my own work now as I was then... 😢

IanHubert

HAH! Yeah I feel that. What's crazy to me is that for the first few years I had to model *everything* with booleans, because you couldn't grab the vertices directly, just mix and match primitives. What a wild way to model.

IanHubert

Also realized the equivalent of saying today "I learned 3d in the 90s" in the 90s would have been the same as saying "I learned 3d in the 60s"- eeeesh hahaha

Brian

Yeah this has been a huge help for 3d prints I've been working on lately. Some of your ground assets have made some fantastic prints

Bakamoichigei

Aaagggghhh! Nooo! I'm not listening! 😫 I don't wanna think about the fact that I've been doing 3D since the mid-'90s! (Or that I learned Photoshop on the first version with layers...)

bittergourd

Weirdly I redownloaded all your assets here from Patreon a few weeks ago and categorized them into an Ian Hubert folder for asset browser use so I could kitbash with them. :)

IanHubert

Ah! I sure thought I downloaded the right version? I'll check again! That'd be rad, thanks :D

Lorenzo Coluccia

to set the file path to the asset folder go in edit>preferences>filepaths , here you can find the place where you set the path to your folder

Richard Cave

thank you, you just saved me hours of pain and crying, lots of

Jed

Do you have plans on releasing your photoscan libraries? The aircraft stuff you got looks really good

Paul Spooner

Sweet intro to assets! I'll have to do this with Geometry Nodes setups. Glad you got that volumetric cube locked in too!

Tiogshi Laj

> model everything with booleans Learned 3D on POV-ray, myself. What is this "mouse" thing you guys keep talking about?

Bakamoichigei

oof! My only contact with POVray was as a renderer for PCB designs I exported from EAGLE using some middleware, and even that brush with it set my teeth on edge. 😓

SwaMusic

Omg..... I used Bryce 3D too!!! They had an old history exhibit with old hardware at GDC this year and it about made me cry haha

Nate

Really helpful video! Thanks Ian!

Wolfers

Can you just release a video one day with you just reading a book, Maybe the scifi novel "F.R.E.E.Lancers" by MelOdom or something cyberpunky/bladerunner or what ever your favorite book is, so i can have something enjoyable while out and about not needing my eyes.

Jv Trammell

Ian! Is there any chance you could do a Patreon video on “Ian Hubert’s filmmaking career” or something. I recently watched Tears of Steel again and saw some bts of it, and would love to know where you got your start, how you created Project London, and get the opportunity to do Tears of Steel at such a young age and everything else you’ve done. As a creator/filmmaker it’s hard sometimes to understand how others got to where they were, and I think there could be a lot to learn!

SYHR SAMOHT

awesome video many thanks. happy patron here!

Rohit badgujar

the polyhaven addon works wonder with all of this, just drag and drop the HDRI and textures, right now I am gathering all the assets by you and making a library out of it.

tathagat films

is it possible to show the pipeline between blender and DaVinci resolve as in compositing and final grade...

2026-09-20 10:00 Hey there Ian! I know you are a busy man so i will try to say this as short possible to not waste your time! I noticed that you might have a bunch of scans that you could need to get cleaned up. Im in a tough spot moneywise these days, living in Denmark, and since i have a bunch of experience with cleaning scans the way you also do it, i was wondering if that is something i maybe could do for you and earn a bit? If you have anything else i could do im open to suggestions! I do have a passion (and quite a lot of experience) with blender/photogrammetry/3D envoirnment! Thanks for taking your time to read this, even if there is no way for you to help me out <3

This is so sick man! Thank you!

Spencer Hooe

That default cube had me in a trance...

Ian

Man, I'd kill for a downloadable version of your asset library. I know we can pick through your pateron backlog and download a lot of them, but that's a decent amount of work.

2026-09-20 10:00 if you link in an asset, you can select the object and go to the object menu->relations->make library override to be able to move the transform data of the asset in your scene without having to jump back to the original blend file. Works with rigs as well. Very useful workflow. Only downside is you wouldn't be able to edit the mesh, but great for making files lighter.
