When we do these 1-2 hour Q&A videos monthly, do you find the extra work I put in to splice in photos and such into the video content worthwhile or am I wasting my time?

If most people just listen to it in the background, be it as a podcast (as a patreon supporter) or via video...still in the background, then I am wasting my time.

So that's the question - does that extra effort really add enough value to justify the work?

I've spent 8 hours editing this month's Q&A and I'm still not done.

Also - how important are timestamps for questions?  That's another ordeal.

Curious about your thoughts.

Thank you,

Karl

Comments

Drew Coleman

Personally I usually just listen in on these, so it's wasted effort on me.

Redpatcher

I do both. I like to sit and watch, but that's not always possible with the length of the videos.

Matthew Antezana

I like to just listen. Added content is nice for when I put eyes on a q&a but not really necessary. If it's that labor intensive I would vote just drop then.

BS_Kustomz

The smoking tire calls it the "Google image game" googling shit they talk about along with the podcast, I find it nice to have context and why I watch the q&a instead of listen

Casey

I don't think it's worthless, but I wouldn't ask you to put a ton of energy into it. If you are referring to a specific idea and you put the photo up then it's worthwhile, especially to those may not know exactly what you are talking about. But I also think you guys are great at giving good descriptions in your videos. Personally, I typically just listen to you in the background, but I do watch from time to time. Do what's best for you and allows you to keep a better schedule.

David Rahn

I usually have them up on my second monitor so it's not my main focus. Personally I don't end up seeing a lot of the editing work that goes into the video aspect of the Q&A videos.

Sean Gallagher

If going save you some in video editing get rid of it and spend the time on the action videos.

Garrett Goodfellow

Visual aids can be useful but nothing would stop me from opening another tab when needed.

Philip

I watch the podcasts, so additional photos are very nice

Sean Smith

I tend to watch them on my big screen TV at home. I might listen to them at work, but the Q&A stuff is like an awesome movie documentary to me, or at least that is how I treat them.

Michael Paul

I watch the YT video, so I appreciate the extra work, but I wouldn't cry if they weren't included. I generally know what you're talking about or know how to use google.

Matt Lohafer

I sit down and watch the videos, so the extra work for supplemental images is appreciated here.

Joseph C Lucci

Personally, I listen to these as podcasts. My commute and exercising is when I have the most time to set aside, so the podcasts work out nicely. So to answer your question, I didn't even know there were pictures.

Matthew Jackson

I watch them, and appreciate it, but from your description the time investment is probably too high - I have pretty good GIS-fu.

Parker Brown

I listen while working, but if I need a visual aid I absolutely take a glance to see what the heck you're talking about. So please do keep the images and visuals. Timestamps I'm not worried about.

Bill Smithem

They're too long to sit and watch. If I run them at all, it's in the background.

Joey

I appreciate that stuff, but if it makes a ton of extra work, I have no problem leaving it out if it saves you some time.

Greg Cain

I watch, and appreciate the additional content. If it is too burdensome to include, I'd be ok without it.

Cade Rarick

I listen to the podcasts at work so I don't see anything that gets put in. If it will allow you to put in more time on our videos I vote to leave them out.

Timothy Sears

I think the pics do add value, but not 8 hours worth of editing kind of value. Speaking from my experience helping my wife's photography business, editing sucks. Good work flows help a lot, but the best thing for InRange, IMO, if at all feasible, is to outsource the editing almost entirely. If you could hire someone (a nephew, friend, random college student, patreon supporter, w/e) and work with them for 1 month to nail down expectations and style, it has the potential to free you up to concentrate on the actual content creation, and might allow some videos to come out closer to the time of capture.

TheOlsonOutfit

I mostly listen while doing chores, etc.

Tony Miliusis

I watch, and the the photos add context, but if it would save significant time, links to these photos would be fine

Kira Stiert

I tend to run them on my second monitor while I've got something else on the first. So I don't give them 100% of my visual attention but I appreciate the added visuals. If it's a huge time sink for you I wouldn't mind just the raw video either.

Ken McNamee

I don't need timestamps but relevant pictures are a bonus to provide context. However, I'd much rather leave you more time to make more videos than spend extra time adding photos to Q&A videos. I can always pause a video or podcast to google something you mention if there was no photo spliced in.

Darby Metcalf

I swap between audio only and the videos. Like on the last video about the sturmgewher it was really helpful to look at images that you where talking about. Maybe just splice in less images? Like one or two a video? Or only on important topics?

Reverend Charles

As you suspected, I listen in the background. Ideally this is while cleaning recently used firearms. I vote for not adding the extra content. Save yourself the hassle. It's your words that are most important to me.

Jon G

With the QAs I do just listen and stream them for the audio. However at times I may go back and take a look.

Gary Venable

I like having them to visualize. Would vote to keep them, but completely understand if the Q&A becomes an audio only format.

Shao Zhang

If its something obscure I guess it would help in the long run. Typically I play them in the car but the picture is up and I sneak a peek every once in a while.

Aaron Willhoite

I do appreciate the photos but like everyone else if it's taking that long to do it's not worth the time.

Darby Metcalf

I've never used the time stamps, I just enjoy the video

McQueen

I sit down and actually watch them all, sometimes on my TV. While I enjoy the inserted images and find the added context beneficial, I'm not sure the substantial increase in editing time is worth it. Maybe if you had an intern.

McQueen

This might have worked better as a survey question.

Duncan Latta

I like the pictures, but if they went away I wouldn't stop watching. I tend to put them on at work and just listen, but if you are discussing something I feel I could use a visual on I pick up my phone and look to see if a picture is posted

Thomas Bobay

I often listen to them while doing something else, but will pay more attention or back up the video if there is a picture of something particularly interesting. I'm not sure that is a helpful answer.

Tyler Martin

For that much investment of time, I wouldn't bother doing the video part. Just have the audio over an IRTV logo when you post a vid and if you think it is totally needed put in photo answers or splice in video if it's needed to answer the question. I do like the timestamps but don't require them. But when I listen to the podcasts I really don't feel I miss anything by having it audio only

Billy Kelley Jr.

I mostly watch them all the way through when I can, usually with my bt headphones and sometimes I just listen while doing other stuff but I definitely enjoy the extra content the pictures provide and more than once I've went through and rewatched an entire q&a that I only listened to the first time just so I can get all the visual information too. Timestamps are useful at helping find where I left off if I have to break it into separate days but I don't think they are necessary.

411.48R

Well, the photos are nice but I don't think that I would really miss them. The timestamps are very useful for me.

InRange TV

Wow, that's an interesting other extreme - make it a audio only thing entirely with no video. That never even occurred to me. Honestly that'd make this a piece of cake... ~k

Leonard Heinz

Do I look at the photos? Yes, at least sometimes. Are they worth eight hours of work? No, not to me. And I almost never look at the timestamps.

Timothy S Hennessey

I concur, when it adds value to the presentation it if worth some effort. If it is too much work then shit-can them. The time-stamps are helpful for me when I have to watch across several devices. (This happens when I watch when I'm at work in our SOC and then get home.)

Spanky's Basement

I use the Patreon Podcast for these, because they are usually lengthy and I listen at work or while driving. I am a huge fan of the Q&A content, but I would say treat it like a podcast and use the time saved for something else.

Timothy Sears

I should note that I consume the Q&A and talks with experts (faxon, hmg, etc) almost entirely as a podcast on my 45 minute commute. I occasionally watch them too, or flip back through and review, but I wouldn't miss the graphics much if it makes the videos come out sooner.

Corey Allhands

I do like the photos spliced in, but they aren't necessary. Responding to an earlier suggestion, I would like you to keep them video, things are shown sometimes when explaining that are useful. The timestamps are useful as well if there is a specific question that you're interested in.

Pascal Planchenault

Sometimes I watch, sometimes I listen in the background. Visual cues aren't very important except for very obscure stuff that people may not know about. I would suggest reducing the amount of stuff edited in to save you time. As for timestamps, they're very practical. An easy way of getting the time would be to discreetly use a stopwatch to record the times when you switch to the next question.

Bob McCormick

Photos are helpful. I semi watch while folding laundry or matching socks. I don't use the time stamps as I tend to watch all the way through or in two sessions.

Chris Tremblay

Maybe rather than embedding in the video throw links to pictures in the subject?

Shane Stoneham

I usually listen in more of a podcast manner with audio being the focus. That being said, I often glance at the screen and the photos are a nice touch

Robert Arthur

You can put photos and links in the show notes of a podcast. I would treat the Q&A as a podcast, with good mics. You can shoot it on video if you want, but it would just be a static shot of you and Ian facing each other around a table with mics in front of you. I'd love to listen to it in my car on my commute.

El Andreasson

I watch the video on another monitor usually. I do find it helpful to have the photos, however, as others have said, it's definitely not worth that time spent editing. I can definitely google pictures of equipment I'm not familiar with. I have to say though, I definitely prefer it in video form to audio, because I enjoy seeing you guys converse, but that's just me.

Steel Talon

Time stamps are are a nice luxury. Since you already have a list of questions printed out, and if it's one long cut you could just write down the time code directly from the camera monitor while recording next to each question. Would speed things up, but obviously that wouldn't work if you're making cuts in editing.

Vityaz

I pretty much listen to it in the back ground. So I would vote to spend your time on producing other content. But i will occasionally watch it so I would prefer it to still remain in video form vs pod cast type.

Black Dots

If I need to know what something looks like, I can just Google it. No sense taking 8 hours to enhance a 1 hour video when I can find my own reference photos as needed in a few seconds.

Jacob Stevens

I think still pictures add to the q&a for demonstration but live video work is not necessary. I listen as a podcast 1 out of 4 times

Bill Field

I'm not usually looking at the time-stamps, as I usually watch the entire Q&A or not at all. The pictures I do think add to the videos but should be used when the visual adds something better than simply discussing it and not just for the sake of taking the view away from where you are recording. The following goes beyond what you asked, but if it is being considered at all, I would avoid simply making the recording audio only if that is on the table. The visual interactivity adds to the experience. People see the match videos, mud tests, you and Ian all decked out for a match, even if it's just talking, and I think part of the appeal of the channel is that visual connection/accessibility.

Nathan Gefvert

I use them as podcasts and would rather you have that 8 hours to put towards something else.

Nicholas White

I like the full video treatment. The spliced in pieces absolutely add to the value. I would be LESS likely to listen to a pure podcast. (Not enough going on. I once listened to an audiobook while reading different books simultaneously, and absorbed them equally well.). Video adds a lot more content to scrutinize, (gear, pictures, magically disappearing dogs, what's on Ian's bookshelf, etc) while the audio provides context. All that said, 8 hours of editing, for what is basically fan service is inhumane and unsustainable. Do what you must. Maybe hire interns?

Joshua Jones

I watch either on 2nd monitor or on my TV. I love the extra content but no way is it worth the time you are spending. If the edited content was removed, I'd just do the research myself

Edwin Grubbs

For longer videos like the QA, I normally just listen to the podcast. I agree with Steel Talon that timestamps aren't necessary if there is a table of contents for the video. I don't think you need to splice images. You could just include links in the video description. I don't mind those popup links in videos, but that seems like a problem if you are publishing the video to multiple platforms.

Bryce Duvall

I only listen to them as podcasts. Q&A and interviews such as HMG and Faxon. I really like that aspect of our membership to be able to download and listen.

John Ohme

I think the pictures and videos add to the sessions.

Iain Hutchinson

The odd time there's a picture that's useful but to be honest I listen to them in the background and will only tab over if I think there's a probability of seeing a diagram or demonstration of something that will help.

Steven Sutton

I always watch the video, and I appreciate the inserted pictures. The question timestamps are also useful.

Bruce Stein

Mostly I just listen; 8+ hours is way too much time to spend on editing a Q&A video.

Adam Rose

Useful, yes. 8 hours of editing useful, no....

Joe Rogers

I watch them in their entirety, and the pictures are a big help. That said, I must agree with those who have already said it's not worth that great a time commitment. I would suggest that if finding the pictures is quick and easy, that they might be uploaded as a single collective post to InRangeTV on Facebook corresponding to each video. A link could then be provided to this in the description of each upload of the given video, and a short statement at the beginning would remind interested viewers that the link exists. I do not think the photos are essential, but they may be to other viewers who have never seen anything comparable to a given object of discussion. And even discussions of things with which I am familiar are easier to understand with a visual aid. If the above or a similar idea is either not possible or would not represent considerable time savings (~80% minimum), then your time would be better spent elsewhere.

David Heck

Im a watcher so the inserted images are much appreciated

Rick Ellis

I usually watch them and enjoy the video - there is a lot communicated via your facial expressions and body language - especially humour. It makes the experience much more personal. I like having still pictures in the video since often they provide detail that is hard to find via google (at least for me). I don't use the time stamps. I suggest using fewer acronyms and jargon since you risk loosing less experienced listeners, especially those from outside the USA. That said 8 hours of editing indicates something needs to change!

Michael Smith

I like the inserted images very much.

Emily

This! There have been several times I would've been lost and confused without the aid of some imagery, but, like Joe says above, it's probably not worth as many hours of editing as you seem to have to put into it now. It might suffice to just post a link to the relevant images beside the timestamp in the video description.

Chris Anderson

I usually watch the videos so the pictures are a nice touch to help give context to the subject you're discussing.

theocd

I pretty much always watch them therefore inserted visuals are a great addition, as are time-stamped questions so I can navigate. If there are no visuals I'd rather listen, but it's often hard to know from the start.

Lloyd Hemstreet

I watch and enjoy the inserts, but as others have said, 8hrs is probably excessive. Keep as much as you can efficiently, but cut what you must to make it more manageable.

Reece

I've never used the time stamps so I don't think those a worth the time personally, however the images and such you splice in often help keep thoose of us who aren't quite in the know on the wide range of topics discussed in the loop.

Joe Venzon

I always listen to the podcast version.

PT

I usually just listen. If there is some kind of technical discussion where you're obviously referring to a visual of some sort, I'll take a glance at it. But for me, probably not worth the post-production time you're putting into it.

jason willis

The added images / videos are great but i'm not going to cry myself to sleep if they aren't included anymore.

Tan Hat

I've been meaning to write a message to you for the last couple of weeks to say how much I appreciate the extra photos. I listen to a lot of other Youtube content as audio-only, and pull out my phone occassionally to see somthing of interest. In InRange's case, I find that I mostly have to watch to make sure I catch the additional images, since they are so often helpful for context. If the marginal benefit is outweighted by the marginal cost in time, links in the description would be helpful.

1x4x9

I always consume via video, and enjoy the images and other efforts taken. I truly appreciate the work required to not just edit video, but integrate these other assets, but it does make the overall product better. However, if your subscribers are not +60% video consumers, I could still gain benefits from video. You or your guests often hold up items, and that alone just helps reinforce the information you're trying to disseminate to the audience. Thanks for all your efforts!!!

Joh

Most of the time I simply listen to the video

Magnus Bjernevik

I usually listen tog the podversion, so photos/videos are meaningless for me.

Nick Champlin

I can't say if it's worth 8+ hours, but the more visuals the better as far as I'm concerned. I'd like to see more questions with shorter answers too.

Simon W S

Karl, I always watch the whole thing that you produce, it is one of the things I really enjoy about your content, it is full of information and interest. I have yet to watch an InrangeTV video that I have found uninteresting and the main reason I became a patreon (patron?).

Andreas Frank

I watch them mostly fullscreen and focus on them. However if i hear it takes u 8 hours to edit that stuff into, i dont think its worth it overall. Keep it simple, save time. Only edit that in if it absolutely nessecary to see.

michael wood

I always watch the videos. The pictures are very helpful and appreciated. i think its worth the effort. the time stamp not so much, its handy but not worth that much effort. thanks either way

Christopher

I have watched the Q&A and have listened to them while driving. I do appreciate getting watch, but if limiting the Q&A to more audio only provides more time to work on other video projects I am good with that too.

James Ludovici

I exclusively consume q&a sessions as a podcast in the car, so the pictures don't help me much.

Alex Friedl

I don't think it is worth 8 hours of extra work.

Eki T

They're useful, but perhaps not worth that much time. Perhaps just start cutting out all but the most pertinent of images.

Jasper Welsch

I always watch the video first, usually on the big TV via YouTube but always F30 on my phone. Pictures are a lot. Like everything, don't kill yourself doing it, but it is a definite improvement.

Tan Hat

Now I'm just spitballing, but what if, instead of splicing the images, you just added an audio "ping" as a signifier that there is some reference/background material in the video's description. Would that be simpler? (I personally would vote for the eagle sound from the Independence Day announcement video.)

F4_Phantom

I actually watch your q&a sessions and really appreciate your efforts not only with q&a sessions but, all of your content in InRangeTV.

Tyler Miller

I always listen to it as a podcast.

Teddy

I tend to put your Q&A's on as background noise at work and "skim" listen to it... but then when I get home that evening, I'll hunt through the timestamps for topics I really wanted to get details on, and I'll watch those sections (if not the entire video) with intent, paying attention to y'alls body language, facial expressions, and especially watching the visual aids. It's one thing to just talk about, for example, the quirks of stamping a figure-eight-shaped receiver, it's another to actually hold up a sample receiver next to a cutaway diagram of the receiver's shape.

GinkoGlatzkkopf

Going with the mainstream on this one: Helpful, however not worth the enormous effort.

Matisse Enzer

When a still image shows something you cannot reasonably describe the yes they are good.

Arno Schmidt

The higher the production quality the better. You should think about hiring an editor.

David Gummo

I always watch the Q&A video's so i'm a fan of the pictures and stuff you edit in. But if it's an ungodly amount of editing work then maybe just the things that are obscure or hard to describe. Like if a question is about some weird feature on some obscure gun. Describing that would be far less effective than a picture.

MrMister

The timestamps don't add anything for me, I watch the videos end-to-end. I think adding the photos where appropriate is very helpful, especially on the more obscure subjects, as it saves me time hunting down the background to determine what you are talking about.

Brian Bangs

I listen to them as a podcast while at work. I never even see the pictures. I appreciate the effort though.

Michael Eichman

Oh oops, I didn't know pressing enter would send my comment. Anyway, if it's relevant to what you're talking about to maybe splice in a picture if you don't feel your description was adequate or a picture would do a better job, then that makes plenty sense. I just wouldn't eliminate the option entirely, just save time where you can save time you know.

M

I'm with David Gummo on this one. I always watch the Q&As so I appreciate the extra pictures you put in, but if it's an extreme amount of work, I wouldn't be bummed out if you reduced it to the bare minimum or leave it out altogether. Timestamps don't really matter to me because I ALWAYS watch your videos in one sitting and even if I have to stop watching and come back another time I just remember the the time I stopped and watch from there again.

Zachary Thomas Milhoan

Anything extra to help any viewers to understand is always a good thing and appreciated!

Gerald King

I enjoy the Q and As and would watch with or without additional photos but they do add quite a bit to each video. I always watch the videos, I'm not much in to pod cast. I like to see who is talking and watch their expressions and body language. As always keep up the great work.

Sophie

I like the photos personally, and think it adds a lot.

Greg Dondero

not the biggest fan of pod cats.. I like the video and pics

Josh Bowman

I usually just listen to the Q and A on podcast, so no added value to me. I also don't find I use the timestamp a whole lot either.

Christian Hanes

I think the pictures add a lot, I'm indifferent on the timestamps.

pcman312

I think that the bar for adding pictures/video should be fairly high. I think they're valuable for when people watch the full video, but since a bunch of people only listen to it the effort is lost on them. If it's really useful to have a photo or video, then add it. Otherwise don't add it just for the sake of adding it.

Leonard T Schmandt

I watch the videos and the editing is so seamless that I don't really notice it. Like good audio work, if it is noticed it is not good. So you are doing some pretty good editing, and I therefore really appreciate it and think it adds to the content. With that said, I would forgo the fantastic editing work if it meant more videos.

Kevin Kulp

I find them to be very helpful. I usually know what you're referring to in the discussion, but if the item is fairly esoteric then it definitely helps me better understand the discussion.

Kevin Kulp

As to the time stamps, I watch the entire video start to finish so they're wasted on me. Heck, I almost exclusively watch them on my fire stick, so I can't even see the time stamps.

Charles Adams

When I was doing presentations and classes, if the content was enhanced by the inclusion of a visual aid (I really don't like that term as it demeans what the importance should be), if the video or pic is necessary to clarify the illustration then it might be worth the time. Then again, I often had assistants to do the work for me. However, with the detail that sometimes is necessary with your deep-dives it's your call if you think it's valuable to get your point across. But here's a suggestion - do separate "video-handouts" if possible with little narration and or documentation. Kinda like "if you want to see what this widget does, refer to video widget -1" I think most of your Patreons are savvy enough to follow this. Time stamps may become more and more important as the knowledge base expands, later on if someone wants to know the answer to a specific question, they won't be wading through an hour video. If simple entertainment is the primary or sole focus, then neither time stamps not contextual videos are valuable nor needed.

Michael Smith

What does Google say? And NO, you're not wasting your time, nor this channel in its current information distribution-method.

Greg Kavanagh

I review the time stamps because im interested to read the topics before i listen, however not totally necessary, i would listen to podcast anyway. Since i listen to podcast, i would not miss the video.

Mike Murphy

They're nice but not worth your time. I'm sure you can find a better use for all those hours in your busy schedule.

Ľuboš Gergel

Hi Karl. As a non-native english speaker, I have to say, that sometimes your gestures or body language can get me to point, when my knowledge of english is not enough. Keep going on!

Logan

I really appreciate the time stamps but I don't really need the pictures. I can always Google something in another tab.

Kim Jensen

I really like the added photos etc. But I can understand if it takes to much effort. Timestamps are not important for me, as i allways watch the full video anyway.

Brock Deats

I for one very much appreciate the illustrations, the time stamps I could live without.

Risto Alanko

I watch the videos, I don't like podcasts. Photo inserts etc. make the video more informative. Usually I don't check the time stamps.

InRange TV

The very idea of hiring an editor with our current funding, even with the gracious support we're receiving via Patreon, is not even close to feasible. ~Karl

Felipe Revilla

Technically, I play the video but I only really listen to the audio. I'll usually set up my phone while I'm doing chores and occasionally glance at the video. Timestamps are wasted on me as I watch the whole thing anyway.

Emalkartha

Photos are great, I don't need the timestamps.

Voss

The time stamp isn't necessary for but the list of topics discussed in the video is. As for the spliced in images, I watch the videos intentionally so I enjoy them, but I wouldn't keep it up if only a handful of us do enjoy them.

Mark Neblett

The inserts are hugely important to me -- they often provide detail and context that otherwise would be missed (fwiw, I always watch the video, never listen by podcast).

Anthony Boyd

I do a combination of watching and listening. I like the add ins but I will completely understand if you skip it.

Nicholas

the inserts help add context but links in the description could be used to provide more information and be possibly less work

Mitchell A.

I always watch the videos, so for me the added content is worth it.

Michael Schwern

I watch the videos, sometimes while doing something else but the window is visible, and I appreciate the extra visual content. It gets my attention. I'll even back it up if I think I missed something. The time codes for questions are handy. Occasionally I use your Q&As for reference in history and firearms discussions, and being able to find a specific topic is useful.

SONofaDI

I watch, I approve of the cut in's - listening i guess is ok if you can't get to a screen but to get the full experience - video ROCKS!. Yes we like the editing.

Samuel Wilson

I generally only listen to the video while doing something else, I do love the timestamps though because I like to skip to the questions i find interesting.

JakeJoeBob

I listen to the video but if i'm uninformed on something the spliced in pictures are very helpful. The timestamps are nice however I don't use them all the time.

Torgo_the_White

8 hours? Yeah not worth it. The question timestamps are really handy, and I like the suggestion to add links to clarifying pics in the episode description. But 8 hours? I'd rather you used that time to answer more questions.

Aitor

My case is, quite special, english is not my native lenguage, so videos and fotos are important, because the sometimes technical lenguaje. Ian and especially you Ian (Because of FW) are doing your best, but maybe In Range TV is growing too fast, and need the help of a third person for editting and other timing consuming tasks, if the numbers allow it. Maybe Ian is a similar situation with FW

David Michael L Knobel

I appreciate the pictures alot. I dont ever read the time stamps, I like to watch the entire video. Even when im busy doing something and just listening, The video is in my peripheral vision and the Pictures or when you hold something up to show the camera catches my attention immediately. :)

Deviant Ollam

I hate to make more work for you, but I am also in the camp of folk who like the additional images, video clips, and whatnot that are dropped into the videos. It adds a good deal to the understanding, for me.

Jennifer Rittmann

We typically just listen to it more like a Podcast. Honestly, I didn't know there were pictures spliced into those videos, so I would say it isn't worth the time.

Doc53

I watch the video and appreciate the add ins.

AKguru762

Time stamps yes. Pics no. Podcast is best for my busy life.

Farmer Brown

Timestamps - I never use them. But I watch the video end-to-end (cut the cable!) and appreciate other information brought in. Some basic stuff I can Google in the background, but other stuff you've spliced in, I find very helpful. Don't knock yourself out, but if you have found a nice piece that adds to the question - it is appreciated - at least by me.

Alex Pierce

I like the pictures because I do watch the whole video but you could always link to pertinent articles and sites for further clarification. Do what's best for your schedule and video quality.

Marshall Lee

I like the cut in photos. the timestamps are not that useful for me.

Brandon

My response is really a matter of what *you* want: if you decide to *stop* putting pictures/etc. in, then great, but let us know so I won't worry about watching it anymore. On the other hand, I currently watch the Q&A's because I expect to see some extra stuff, so if that remains the case I will keep watching it rather than running it in the background. Not a great answer, but it's my answer... ;) As for timestamps, I don't need them: I don't skip around and I will watch the Q&A's regardless of content, so it is wasted time IMO.

Eric Hentz

I personally really appreciate it. If you guys start talking about something I've never seen before, it's very helpful.

David Alexander

I usually either podcast or watch them in the background, so I rarely see the edits. The timestamps are nice, but not having them wouldn't be a dealbreaker. If it's a question of having the edits/timestamps or having more videos or more questions answered, I wouldn't miss the edits.

Andrew Fisk

I generally watch the Q&As unless they come out while I'm traveling, but I wouldn't mind if the add-ins vanished. I do use the timestamps, though.

David J.

Same here, though i never use the timestamps.

Alex S.

I usually watch the video as my primary activity at the moment, so I appreciate the visual add ins.

Terry Buchholz

I watch them and appreciate the add ins, the head nods, the props, etc. The time stamps aren't essential to me because I don't skip around, but I have gone back to Q&As to watch the answer to a particular topic/question again. So having the questions listed does make it easier for me to access again if I need to, but if they're in chronological order then time stamps aren't required. Thanks.

Joseph Jordon

I enjoy the add ins, and appreciate all the hard work that goes into making the videos. Thanks.

DDYEEYEE

I usually have the video playing as background audio so the visual aids do nothing for me. Thanks.

Chenley Brock

I like the spliced in photos/clips as I give the video my full attention (or most of it) -- but if it's too much work I could live without them. Not bothered about the timestamps.

Chris Trott

I like the addins. Even when I just listen to the video, I've gone back to see images of stuff later (or "rewound") when some thing piques my interest.

Norman Davis

You are not wasting your time, the extra work enhances the video.

Giulio Flore

Worth the work, as some specific points are better understood with a graphic.

Daniel Tighe

I find the graphics help clarify come of the things you discuss as it can be difficult to follow. I will watch the video but I might be doing something on another screen. I've never we used the time stamps but I do like having the questions in the disciplining if I ever go back to a specific answer later on.

Brian Herzog

I always watch the video, and find the additional visuals extremely helpful and interesting.

Ian

Pictures: great if they're there but, easy come easy go. The Q&A is the important thing. Timestamps: greatly appreciated but not necessary.

Bartosz Parczyński

When I'm coming back from work I'm turning on tv, connecting my phone to it, and listen to you more, than I listen to my wife;) the pictures and stuff like this helps your not-native-english-speaker viewers.

Tim

I think the pictures/video edited in are only necessary if there is no other way to make the point clear.

USNA 98

Since you've started offering them as podcasts, I solely listen to the audio only version. When I watched them, the extra content was appreciated.

Dayhiker42

Given the length of the Q&A sessions, I'd say the time is much better spent on editing the shorter videos and letting the Q&A be more of a podcast.

Niel Dilworth

I usually watch the videos (this isn't radio) and the images you add always fill in a gap in the narrative for someone who does not have as deep a background in the subject.

Shay Corley

I personally like the photos, etc. spliced into the Q&A. For me, it is worth it. ...Of course, I'm not the one spending 8hrs editing a single video. So, if you think your time could be better spent, you should drop it. I'd understand and keep watching if you did.

Bjorn T Case

The q and a videos i watch, and the pictures of things you talk about are nice, but i could just google it if i was really interested. So I like the editing but wouldn't cry if you took less time.

Paul Craig

Time stamps are great. The pictures I like but probably not worth that much time.

Hugh Peterson

They both make a big difference for me, but don't kill yourself making them perfect. All I really need is a visual to give me a reference of what you're talking about. A quick picture is fine, no need to edit in video.

Nicholas Farrar

I only watch the videos. The samples and diagrams are a wonderful aid to the video.

Dag Tronstad

I for one appreciate the effort. It separates you from all the other gun related channels. Not just two dudes talking guns. It puts a little polish on your content.

jcd

I sometimes watch, sometimes listen. If you say "we'll put up a picture of X" I'll take a look, but otherwise the video is generally in the background.

Dag Tronstad

I meant to say. "Some other channels"

Shane Elfield

I appreciate the pictures, if I'm playing it in the background I generally scan through the thumbnail to see where the pictures are and pop back to view those parts.

PHAZE

I think the pictures are sometimes very useful and add some, but sometimes don't. It depends on if the subject warrants it, I suppose. I appreciate the list of questions to get an idea of what is covered, but I don't care about the actual timestamps.

Herk

I do actually watch the videos and the spliced pics are beneficial to me. That said, I wouldn't eschew vids without the spliced pics.

Joseph Iacobucci

Could we just have the pictures on a site somewhere with timestamps/topic? I typically just listen to the podcast on the Q&A.

Anthony Hope

I definitely appreciate the spliced in pics, particularly with topics talking about things that are not common so a visual aid helps to complete the picture.

Danny Hanny

The editing in of reticle view images and the like for explanatory videos is warranted for many videos. But for a Q&A video? I'm on the fence - some things beg a spliced-in image or video clip for clarification. But, generally, your q&a videos are long enough and detailed enough that no, I wouldn't go overboard on them alone.. Spend that time editing the main videos, but a Q&A session probably isn't the place for it. To be more specific to your question. I can see how the Q&A videos may be listened to on Bluetooth headsets, but I personally watch just about every video. I think I did play a video game over your and Ian's discussions during one Q&A, once, so I can see what you mean.

Duke VonMeep the 2nd

I like the photos, and I watch the video and listen to the podcast

toby person

but is it worth the extra time put in? I'd say no but if you think a picture works in that place then put it in, but let the be the exception and not the rule

Ben Clayton

While I love your usual production quality I would be happy with you just dumping a rough cut for the q&a as it more like a friendly conversation

Ernie Anderson

Use your judgement if it's super important slip it in, we trust your judgment.... I love the q&a's no matter what brother. Keep up the good work Karl....👍🏼👍🏼

Jeff Greenfield

I didn't even know there were pictures. I just listen as a podcast. I would view pictures or screen shots if available in the time stamped index you provide on Patreon but not a necessity. Thanks for all the hard work.

Angus Anderson

I like the pictures, but they're not essential. So if I knew they were taking you away from other awesome content, I could live without.

Timothy Smeddal

I am one of those podcast-listener types. But that being said; if you are talking about something super-awesome, I react by scrambling to my phone to pick it up and see if you included a picture of it! And in there event there isn't a picture, I pause the video to conduct an internet search of whatever you are talking about. I love the pictures of the awesome and obscure things you cover in your videos, but as many here have already stated; if you don't think it will add value then don't waste your valuable time.

Lonesome Paul

I like photographs and short videos with the Q+A sessions, but if there is a quick and dirty method that is less refined and easier to do I wouldn't squawk.

Jonathan Beland

The photos are great and add a lot. If there is a way to do them quick and easy please continue. They don't need fancy editing or anything. But I understand if it just takes too much time.

Eric Meyer

I think unless you are taking about something obscure I don't think the images add all that much. Rough time-stamps are nice for the MP3s on occasion, but not really worthwhile on youtube. I wouldn't be upset to lose eithe rof them, to be honest.

Eric Hadley

I generally listen to the podcast form, but I will often go back to the video for visual information that I can tell is missing. For me, a list of linked images with both approximate time-stamps and brief (~1 sentence) explanations in the YT description/Patreon post would be just as good for my viewing.

Derek Martin

I usually "listen" watching youtube while working and focus on the screen to look at inserts. You usually post a time log in discription, hyperlinks to the subject may suffice if its less work. I dont edit video so i dont have a clue.

Bruce Brodnax

I sometimes find the embedded photos helpful, which is why I always listen to the video as opposed to podcast, even if I'm doing something else in the foreground as the video plays while I listen. The timestamps for the questions I figure is something for posterity, in case someone comes back to find that particular question again; I could live w/o the actual timestamp, but the list of questions answered is a valuable component of the content description.

Kazzerax

If gathering the relevant images doesn't take much time, just dump the images in an album we can view, maybe caption them with the time stamps. That way there's no need to fool around with video editing software, and you don't lose the photograph perk. That said, I usually listen to the Q&As on my commute, but I often check out the videos (for watching, not listening) to bits I found particularly interesting.

Alex

I like the photos because I often don't have a reference for what is being discussed

Fred Rush

I rarely get to watch the video version, mostly listen to the podcast. The pictures are nice when i do get to catch the video, but if it is eating into your time i would skip it

Truls Jacobsen

Don't bother with any fancy editing. And they are starting to get a bit to long. Just shorten it and talk about fewer topics. Other than that they are good videos.

Scott England

I don't ever just listen to the podcast, I only watch the video's, so I appreciate the visual references.

Matias

I always just listen so dont bother with it man

Maave

I've been listening in the car or while doing work, so it's not needed for me.

idmicheal

I don't care about the timestamps; I always listen to the whole thing, I never skip around. I often find the pictures helpful to reference the topics being discussed.

Mikael V.

pics are good for reference, but I wouldn't go hunting for them or anything. If you have a good one in mind and it's easily accessible for splicing in there, the extra visual is appreciated. I can't overstate how helpful the timestamps are when looking to rewatch a certain bit. The q&a videos are a valuable resource, not just a watch once and forget type of thing. What do you use for editing?

David Dixon

I don't think timestamps for questions are that important. I think just about all of the viewers watch the entire video or not at all. Also with the spliced images, i believe they do add value to the videos however they are not necessary for the videos to the entertaining and informative, if the work is too much i wouldnt miss them. Cheers for all the videos so far.

Christian Bügenburg

If a photo helps in understanding the topics, it is worthwhile. Images just for the sake of having Images is not. Anyway, I'd take timestamps over photos any day :)

Emmitt Neal Scroggs Jr

I'm curious about your workflow. What platform do you use for video editing? PC or Mac. I've seen both in your in the backgrounds of some videos. Also, what, if any DAW do you use?

Miles C. Plannette

When I have time to sit down and watch, the added photos are nice but not necessary. If it would cut down editing time significantly, which I assume it would, pictures should be omitted.

Daniel Kibler

8 hours is a lot of time to dedicate to editing one video especially when you have several coming out per week. I'm about split on how I take in the content sometimes I listen, sometimes I watch. If the image helps to understand the topic at hand put it in if not then don't waste the time.

Tobasco da Gama

I certainly *appreciate* the extra work for splicing images and making timestamps, but it's not essential to my enjoyment of the Q&As. I will say that, of the two, I'd say that timestamps are the more important use of your time. It's not important to me, as a viewer, because I tend to watch your videos all the way through. However, if I were somebody trying to use InRange to do research, I think having timestamps for specific questions is a huge boon for that use case.

Ben Hall

I appreciate the images, those really help me when you are talking about something I don't understand as much, but I never use the timeline. I see how it could be useful, but I just never use it.

Ian Hill

It depends on how complicated the idea is that you're trying to explain if you need to show a picture or not. What level of understanding do you assume each viewer has? I agree that timestamps for each question on the youtube descriptions are unnecessary.

Agostino Ventura

I usually look at the video the whole time, so any picture or schematic is never wasted on me.

John Henry

I appreciate all of the additional pictures and clips that you add to each video. They are always relevant and add to the information you are presenting.

Adam Cicigoi

I listen to the Q&A's in the background while I work. Sorry if I make you feel like you're wasting your time. The timestamps would be helpful, though.

Joshua Fairhurst

I do get good use out of the spliced in images/video, but that sounds like a lot of work for the convenience of those who view the whole thing. Sometimes I watch, sometimes it gets podcasted. I'll leave that one to you, maybe compromise and put links in the description? Those link overlays that youtube will do? Save editing time but still have them available for those who care. Timestamps are awsome to have though. Need to replay a specific chunk to make a point with friends? Don't want to randomnly hop through the whole thing trying to find the right part? Boom, it's in the description

Steve Zeatlow

Depends on what your talking about , it was a nice addition on the last HMG video.

Shawn Adams

I always watch your videos in their entirety and I appreciate the pictures.

Frank Baud

Pictures are great but if it's a lot of work you should prioritize the ones that are necessary to explain the concept and omit others. The timestamps are probably a useful reference for going back to find something. Perhaps that's something you can crowdsource to us? I'm sure a few people would be willing to assist with that. I usually watch the whole thing straight through so I don't find myself referring to the timestamps.

Andreas Nohl

I find the pictures helpful. I normally view the video, maybe eating; but never in the background. Maybe you can reduce the amount of pictures but I think it is part of the very good quality. If abbreviations are used or a model number ... Not native English speakers are lost (or like I do, look some, I feel necessary, up somewhere but that is not nice). I don’t use the time stamp. But the points ate helpful to find something in an older Video. Can you make is assembly for viewers to set the timestamps in?

MarvinCZ

Most of the time images are not needed. If there's something that really benefits from an illustration, it's nice. If it's a global yes/no, I'd say don't bother. With regards to timestamps: The list of topics discussed is crucial, definitely keep that. The timestamps are just a nice bonus, we can always find the place ourselves. In some full musical album videos, viewers comment the track list with the timestamps, perhaps we can get that going here.

Spencer Lane

I do tend to watch it as a video in the background, but when I see a photo I pay attention. I definitely appreciate you showing me what you're talking about.

Just Take My Money

I have your long videos up on my 2nd monitor while I do other stuff. I pay attention to images shown, but if picture is not essential to convey a point your time is better spent elsewhere. I mean images are nice but Time is one resource that you can't just buy more if you already have appropriate tools for the job. Timestamps are absolutely essential. Timestamps give overview of the video and you can skip parts that are not of a great interest to you.

Michael Stueber

The timestamps are fantastic. The images are just a nice-to-have (and I'll very often just listen to the audio while driving, and not even see them). It sounds like the amount of effort you have to put in might be better spent elsewhere.

Tigger

I personally watch so I enjoy the spliced in photos (especially liked the ones in the recent HMG STG44 #5 episode). But it is your time and effort and you can best decide how to use it.

David Clegg

I like the spliced in photos, especially for something a bit esoteric that I'd have to go and google. If I'm short on time I listen to it as a podcast, but every time I've done that I've gone back and watched the video at a later date. Must be something to do with the facial hair.

Piotr Parys

I do watch it and enyoy this pictures/editing.

David Key

I like them in a podcast/mp3 format. The videos are awesome, but the longer content I prefer to ingest via audio, and the Q&As seem to fit that well.

Jean-Luc Larose

I really appreciate having the photos but they are not essential. Timestamp on subjects is really great, useful and a nice quick summary.

Daniel Bobo

I found I prefer the audio-friendly stuff in podcast form, so I'd say the videos aren't necessary.
