If you could ask a round table of "professional" hackers a question, what would it be?

Yes, there's a potentially unique opportunity coming up to do some also very unique content so while I realize we now have two posts soliciting questions for two Q&As (P&S/CarnikCon/InRange), this request is specifically for questions related to anything hacker/tech/culture related.

Single sentence questions, please.

Thank you!~Karl

Horribly from I've heard but we'll let the expert chime in.

The NIST has just changed its password policy advice, do you think this will make a dent in the legions of companies that have dumb or frankly dangerous password policies/systems?

Rupanrx

Any of them inspired by the movie hackers? I still like the soundtrack lol.

Bill Field

How about "What was the most insane (as in counter productive to creating a secure working environment) thing you have been asked to do by a superior despite your recommendations against it?" Paraphrase if under NDA if need be.

What are some of the simplest ways to increase your security while on the internet? (Preferably ways that aren't an annoyance, i.e. crazy passwords that are different for everything). Merci

Samuel K Harsha

Do you have an opinion on the security of data in a flat database due to the inherent obfuscation of the semantic content, versus a storing data in a relational database with typical encryption? I.E. Is data more secure in "The cloud" with a system like Salesforce or is it better to have it in a MS-SQL Server DB that is on sight and behind LDAP authentication?

Paul Montanari

Honestly how secure are Smart Phones and what measures can people do to further protect them.

Matthew Remmich

Here is a really dumb one: Do location services on cell phones make us vulnerable? I know it sounds "tinfoil hat" level paranoid, but it seems like having people's real time location could be potentially valuable for certain malicious acts. Thanks.

In Australia we pay different amounts for internet mostly depending on how many GB we use, is this a fair method or are our Telcos ripping us off.

Equifax data breach that had gone on from May - July was just announced today (7 September 2017), another on top of the many (OPM, etc..) high profile data breaches that put our PII in the clear and the current practice is enrollment in TrustedID credit monitoring service (they don't actually do anything for you, they just tell you when something is happening with your credit and then it's up to you to run it down). Is this the new normal? How do we stop this and get back control of our private info?

toby person

would you consider, in general, most internet banking sites are safe for use?

Nick Champlin

What nations have notable 'hacker armies', and how do they differ organizationally?

Charles Adams

Karl, I really need some education in the whole aspect of current hacking. For 30 years I've been involved in working in public utilities and over the past five years I am told on a continuous business that the entire power grid, water and sewer systems are in danger of being hacked. I'll admit I have limited knowledge of the control systems of large transmissions of electric power, (I have been informed the isolation of control systems form the internet for nuclear power plants are especially robust) but local and smaller regional in which I have considerable experience aren't connected to the internet, other than monitoring, would this be significant danger in itself? ; things like SCADA systems specifically exclude this, or I thought they were. Are there ways and techniques to rewrite protocols, control systems even code supposedly secured by the average hacker? What about the by the accomplished state-sponsored, corporate or NGO employed hacker? I really want an authoritative prospective and opinion on this subject.

Although I heard it on Coast to Coast about 2 decades ago (...um, wow; *midlife crisis begins*), whoeveritwas they had on as guest said that there were so many no-longer-manufactured hardware components, especially as compared to software, that a bad enough Y2K issue or a large Coronal Mass Ejection (which were the only "power grid threats" I ever heard anyone talk about at the time) - if either were significant enough to take down a large portion of the grid - would cause a cascading effect that, in total, would render something like 80%+ of the power grid dead for upwards of a decade. Again, that was CtC and 20 years ago, so could be of urban myth quality now for all I know, but still...I too would really like to know this answer.

In the USA our cellphone companies constantly change their plans - quite vocally via TV ads, to boot - in an attempt to "out-data" the competition: decreasing cost-per-GB to gain customers. But ISPs - unless they run on a cell network - only ever limit bandwidth (AFAIK; maybe there's some non-cell ISP that charges by the gig). So yeah...if you have no alternatives, I at least would say that you're being screwed. :(

Brandon

With the age of payphones, red boxes and 1-900 chat lines long-gone, what sort of shenanigans are phreakers up to these days?

Anthony Hope

Mobile Broadband (not sure if you guys have that but it's not Cell Data) here is incredibly expensive, but people that use it often don't have any other choice. Not all homes have cable or fibre in their homes. Up until recently that was me, I was paying 80AUD for 8gb of data per month. Now I have cable broadband and for the same price I get 500GB per month. For mobile phones the amount you get is typically small and if you go over the limit they charge you 10AUD per gb

With the recent US government decision to ban the use of Kasperky software over potential security concerns and the ongoing controversy over Simon and Speck's potential adoption by the ISO, are there any other very widespread but relatively unknown (to the non techy public) programs or standards that are known or suspected of being subverted by major governments to nefarious and/or spooky ends, and are there any good alternatives?
