Hey everyone! Here is the first 2 Hour video tutorial along with the scene files.  I am currently encoding the bonus tutorial and I will be uploading that here as soon as it is done. The Bonus video covers a few topics and questions some people had regarding instancing with proxies, generating proxies and also scattering multiple objects.

Thanks again for all the support and I hope you guys learn some cool stuff and apply these techniques to make some awesome renders!

Thanks Saul this is Great! Is there anyway to use user data to switch between different displacement maps? The shader switch doesn't seem to be working for that. Sorry if you mentioned it in here somewhere.

Hi Saul. Going thru this tutorial. For some reason cannot get any of the tree materials to render. Is this possibly because your RS materials are linking to non existent texture files? Also, was wondering, how would you go more granular and say randomize leaf materials on a single tree?

Saul Espinosa

Hey there, the reason the tree textures dont show up is because the trees are made using SpeedTree and legally I am not allowed to distribute assets made with SpeedTree according to their documentation regarding distribution and re-use. So sorry about that, but you can change out those trees for your own assets and get the same thing going since this tutorial is really only about instancing assets with Redshift + Houdini.

Saul Espinosa

I have not used that app specifically but there are other ways to make trees, SpeedTree just happens to be the defact industry standard. That said you can import any of your own assets just fine and scatter them using the techniques in that tutorial. The tutorial is really just about scattering in general anything you want. :)

Gary Crane

hey saul, I am running into an issue that houdini is crashing when using the integer randomize attribute

Gary Crane

I had to switch to discrete, and I'm also having issues with assigning this to points

Philipp Zakrzewski

Hi Saul, at around 24 minutes you set up random rotation using an Attribute Randomize. In order to streamline the network a bit (as I might want to add other random attributes to the points), I set up a Point VOP, adding a 'pscale' attribute to the mix. However, for the life of me, I can't figure out how to replicate the random rotation you did with the Attribute Randomize node inside the VOP network. Any idea? That'd be much appreciated :-)

Hi Saul, it seems like the textures aren't among the project files. The file paths are all pointing to "//SAULSNAS/home/Assets/Models/SpeedTree_Assets/Broadleaf/Acacia/...". Would it be possible to get those? The Acacia looks dope and I'd like to see how the whole forest pans out by the end of the tutorial. Cheers!

Saul Espinosa

Unfortunately, the SpeedTree EULA does not allow me to distribute or include the assets made inside of it. Sorry, nothing I can really do about that.

New user here - just checking to see if how you use the rs_instance node in this tutorial still the best way to render instances with the latest version of Redshift and Houdini 18? So everything needed to be instanced and rendered in Redshift will need to be inside the rs_instance node (or can you use an object merge too?)

Saul Espinosa

Any instancing method works, all the instance node is actually doing is adding an "instance" attribute to every point inside said node. So you don't even need to use that node, you can just add the instance attribute, or instancefile if your pointing to assets on disk, or you can use packed primitives if your working with CopySOPs so long as you turn on packedprim instancing on the redshift object properties. This tutorial was made before packedprim support existed. That said everything in it still works and is a valid method along with all the other methods above.

John Groff

Thanks for your helpful info. So, it sounds from what you're saying, I can now use any of native Houdini's various ways of instancing geo to points and such as long as I enable the packedPrim instancing in Geo's Redshift object's properties.

Hi Saul I am going "back to the beginning" so to speak and working through your content... I'm mindful of the fact that systems often change and update and just wanting to check if in the case of instancing with RS and Houdini, using the instance node is still the way to go or if a newer approach has been developed...

Saul Espinosa

Hey there, technically the "instance" and "instancefile" for proxies is the best way to mass instance. The instance node just applies the "instance" attribute to all the points inside and uses the path of the object you chose. CopySOPs of packed primitives also works and is the "easiest" to use but has a bit more overhead vs the instance attribute and even better the instancefile attribute while reading in a proxy from disk. Hope that helps!

Dark Arps

It does, thanks Saul :)

SantiDarkG

Thanks a lot Saul for your hard work. Time to enjoy it :)

look forward to seeing any cool stuff you make with it, feel free to share it in the Redshift facebook group :)
