This is the bonus tutorial for Course #4 which covers how to generate proxies in Houdini, export and import, Overriding the materials in a proxy and how to instance them in your scene using the techniques from the previous tutorial. This video also covers how to instance multiple objects instead of one using the "instance" attribute and how to use the "instancefile" attribute to import files outside of Houdini.

Thanks again for all the support guys and I look forward to our next tutorial!

Would possible a video bonus of how the instancing & scatter process (Material Stylesheets, Proxies & Multiple Objetcs) in Renderman and Houdini? :P

Saul Espinosa

Hey Victor, it's the same exact process, the only difference is instead of using Redshift userdata and shader switch nodes your going to use Rendermans pxrAttribute or pxrPrimvar and pxrMultiTexture nodes. Here's a good intro to PrimVars, it's in Maya but the same thing applies in Houdini your just adding the attributes through the Houdini attribute randomize and create SOPs. <a href="https://youtu.be/ZUtN8R4TiV8" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">https://youtu.be/ZUtN8R4TiV8</a>

Hey Saul, .hip file for this?

Saul Espinosa

It's in the tutorial just below this post, this is just the shorter bonus tutorial while the files and assets etc are included in a zip file in the main tutorial post.

Thanks. Made suggestion to Patreon support to allow content creators to post and update tutorial links in the sidebar. Something better is needed than just the 'Recent Posts...'

For clarification, with a proxies workflow with a randomize instance object: I guess the scene would have a network box with the 4 object, another network box with the 4 proxies referring to each objects and the instance pointing to the random proxies?

Saul Espinosa

You can either use proxies in your scene with the same name and just different integers like Proxy_1, Proxy_2 and so on and use the integer randomization like you would any normal object or you could do the same but use instancefile attribute to read it from disk with a similar naming convention like proxy_1, Proxy_2, and so on. There are several ways to approach it.

Hi Saul, I can't fine Redshift proxy Sop node inside Houdini 18 with Redshift 3.0.27. Also there's no Redshift proxy in ROP. has it been replaced by another node? or should I reinstall Redshift?
