Hey guys! This month Patreon tutorial will be another technical one. This is a complex and confusing subject matter that I see asked about a lot. I figured I would make a tutorial covering ACES & OCIO for CGI. There isn't a lot of information about these subjects out on the web so this will be perfect for people interested in ACES + OCIO pipelines across multiple applications.

I will cover ACES setup, texture asset conversions, ACES input/output spaces. Keeping ACES the same across multiple applications, and finally, how to make a custom OCIO profile we can use in all OCIO capable application. This is a complex and in-depth tutorial I think many users will benefit from. As usual, all files will be included with the tutorial. The tutorial will be posted for all my Patrons March 4th. Thanks!

Great! I am looking forward to it. could you also include a little about setting up a DMP painting space? I would like to see how you would set it up and hopefully improve my own workflow.

Hey Gerard, I actually do cover setting up a DMP ACES setup in this video. I go over installing the OCIO plugin for Photoshop and converting the Linear render file into ACEScct which is an ACES Log space so you can paint in 16bit while proofing in an ACES display space like ACESsRGB, you can then export that 16bit log file out or convert it back to 32bit and load it into your comp package as ACEScct or convert it to another ACES format like ACEScg. I will go over this process more in depth in an actual DMP tutorial with some video footage we push through ACES but I wanted to first explain how to use ACES in general.

Cool, yeah that sounds like my current workflow as well. But I am getting a little frustrated with Painting in Photoshop ACEScct especially when using a preview profile or using preview LUTs in photoshop. For example, in the current show i'm on the DMP's look fine in PS but in Nuke I can see subtle spots and errors with colour grades that Photoshop just can't see. Hopefully I can see some tips in your tutorials!

In this particular tutorial I don't go in-depth into ACEScct really, its more of an intro to using ACES pipelines across apps and OCIO customization. You seem to already know the pipeline so you likely already know all this stuff.

We've been trying to get a consitent look and results across Arnold, Redshift, Nuke, After Effects, C4D, etc. Hopefully this one clears up a few things for us.
