Redshift 2 Maya - Tutorial #18 - Redshift RenderView & Post Effects

Hey guys! In this tutorial we will be covering all the awesome new features inside of the Redshift Renderview. We will also look at the Post Effects. This was all merged into the main Redshift builds as of 2.6.33, everything I cover in this tutorial will pretty much apply across all the difference Redshift apps as the options and settings for the renderview are the same. Thanks again everyone for all the support on my Patreon and Youtube channel. This helps me continue to provide in-depth tutorials and free short Youtube tutorials. Its really appreciated. It looks good. Will there be more maya-related tutorials in the future?

Saul Espinosa

I will be making a short video covering the new Maya direct Maya Fluids volume rendering with Redshift soon.

Hi Saul! Love your tutorials! I’m new to Maya and Redshift. When I batch render it seems to always open the Maya render view window and use some particular color settings. When I open the RS render view window and render a frame I can change color settings and they show in the window but when batch rendering the color settings are what I see in the Maya render view. How can I get Maya to open the RS render view window and use those color settings when I start a batch render? Thanks!!

Greg Bollella

Pinging you with the above question again :)

Saul Espinosa

I answered your question in the facebook group but i will leave it here also for anyone else who might see it. Is there a particular reason why you want to bake in the LUTs, curves etc? The reason this is disabled by default when batch rendering or rendering EXRs or any other High Dynamic Range file is because it is a destructive process and WILL clamp your files. The assumption is in the typical compositing workflow you re-apply your LUT, OCIO view, Curves etc there, not baked into the files. But if you do want to do this in the render settings (I do not recommend it unless you just don't care and like the file exactly as it looks out of the rendeview and have no plans on modifying it further.) Inside of the render settings there should be a section called "post fx" in this section there are 2 checkboxes which are off by default, 1 for batch rendering and another for HDR image formats. Enable these 2 checkboxes and you will now be baking in those particular post fx into the image file.

Thanks Saul. I'm really new to the area of digital art and so though getting some understanding I have a lot to learn. Only recently did I realize that color correction typically happens *after* rendering. My assumption is that it is done in something like After Effects or Resolve. Any recommendations for a newbie Indie user? Thanks!

Saul Espinosa

Personally really like Resolve for color correction, it just works well and has a lot of control. But really any image editing app will work that supports LUTs, Curves etc to get a similar color grade as whatever you used in the RS Renderview. You can of course bake this in like I mentioned which might be best while your starting out until you get a hang of the workflow.

Looking forward to your tutorial on OCIO next month. I have tried loading your ocio profile into Maya and Maya immediately crashes when I select it in Preferences->Color Management. Probably something I am missing somewhere. It will be good to follow along on the tutorial!

I am using Maya 2022 on MacOS 11.5
