The Desolation of Smaug refers to the bleak, barren, and charred wasteland surrounding the Lonely Mountain (Erebor) and the ruined city of Dale, which was scorched and devastated by the dragon Smaug when he first attacked and drove out the dwarves. I mentioned before. The Hobbit was Tolkien's Childrens tale adapted from stories he told his own kids... more silly, not bloody, lots of gross silly humor.

You know, it's interesting that you mention that there's shots that feel like they're shot with a different lens, or just feel "different" overall, towards the end. Specifically during the "Smaug" part of the movie. Quite a lot of that later third act is actually part of the extended edition. I don't remember seeing a LOT of those scenes in the theatrical version. All that being said.. I like this film. I like the first Hobbit film. Like you said, the first film is very "cozy" especially how the first third is basically in the shire, the middle third is just traveling along the road with low stakes other than trolls, and the final third is Goblin town which includes the GOATed Smeagol interaction. This film is more fast paced, but it contains a lot of "lore" packed tightly. We get Beorn, the forest, the necromancer, laketown, and the mountain. The Hobbit book wasn't nearly as dense, but I like how there was always something NEW happening. As an avid Tolkien fan, I've read the books, watched the movies, read even the supplemental books, and I honestly don't understand the hate for the hobbit movies. Yeah, they're ridiculous and have too much CGI. But heck... I've played videogames (some of which have been excellent, and others have been TERRIBLE, but I still did it!), just to mainline more Tolkien into my bloodstream like a heroin addict. I think my one exception is rings of power. I tried. I really did. I like the lore, but it just wasn't interesting to me, the way something like the Fallout series is VERY engaging as a Fallout player since the first games in the 90s. Anyway... Love the reaction! Can't wait for what you think about part 3! Without spoilers, it's my least favorite due to bloat, but also contains some of my favorite scenes and plot points in the "hobbit franchise". As always, thanks to the underdog Sheject team! Tara + Roxy may be the OG's, and I'll love them forever, but both of you have won my heart over and over again!
