KPOP FAN

Side question: when are you relasing the 2nd part of the SSS signal marathon?

ana

overall, wish we could have seen more of the songwriting process but the doc was more about their identity now rather than the album i think. i love that the members stood up for themselves. bang pd and hybe executives aside, you can tell that their identity is still just people who want to make good music. i'm glad they fought for korean lyrics and took the risk to change up their style for a title track even tough they weren't 100% sure about it (although it wasn't executed perfectly). I also wasn't worried at all knowing that they're taking a break for the military. Like even BTS said that the reaction was unnecessarily overwhelming. Suga literally said that they don't want to stop forever but it feels like the world is telling them to. For me, it just made sense and you could tell that they needed it. Even more now, after seeing how good it was for them Even now, there are so many people saying that this is their last album and tour?? and i'm like where did you get that from like please just listen to what they say?? It's not even reading between the lines, they outright talk about wanting to make music together and perform for years so where this delusion comes from idk

ana

You are correct. Not a single ARMY said the album didn't feel korean or BTS. it was just everyone outside this realm who keep up with kpop but have no idea about the groups identity. Also this entire korean debate has been so cringe to witness like some people really don't get how insulting they can be when they as foreigners decide "what is korean enough" and i never really clocked it but you saying that its not weird or kitschy enough really made me realise exactly how nasty that sentiment is. there is a huge section of kpop fans that pride themselves on seeing the talent in or liking this niche art/community. It's almost like they want to gatekeep it and refuse to let it grow beyond that. which sucks considering how hard these idols work. they deserve to be more but fans and the companies are hellbent on deciding their identity and place for them that they end up sticking to what they're told they're good at.

Cheng A

Thanks for the reaction PD. Can you react to the Epikase with RM and Suga? I think you'll enjoy it and it reveals a lot about BTS and Eoik High's history and the whole video is just unhinge. It would be interesting for someone who knows both groups to react to it 😂

maria_yah

"it's so good to see RM with hair again" DUDE I WAS ALL IN MY FEELS AND THAT BROUGHT ME THE FUCK BACK LMAOOO

Form of Therapy

I’m sorry 😂 he’s just been monk buzz cut mode for like 2 yrs I really like his hair style hahaha

maria_yah

Dw I got back into my feels quite quickly after, but MONK??? Too accurate😂 I still like to imagine there's an alternate timeline where we got a comeback with fully bald BTS, heads so shiny the graphics on the screens during their performances just bounce off them

Yemidotcom

I say this with all the love and dignity in my heart BTS and Beyoncé are the only artist that are this big (and living) that continuously fuck up my understanding of an entire genre for shits and giggles in the most inspired way possible. Did I think I was gonna get spaghetti on that country ass album? No did I think I was gonna get swim on this Korean ass album no. Am I happy that I did it both times yes. because it made me rethink my thoughts, which is what art is supposed to do.

Zuv

I think maybe they didn't put the choreography for SWIM in the MV to create more hype for the first performance in the comeback show. Like, that short clip that Netflix released of the members stretching then doing the first move for Swim right before the comeback created a lot of hype! I agree with you that it definitely made the MV less impactful though, definitely a marketing strategy.

Yemidotcom

Also also 1:38:35 … black people don’t like it either… 😬

Just some tidbits on some of the things you mentioned: idk what I've done to deserve it, but for some reason my TikTok FYP keeps going on some weird trips to places I just don't care for. As in, I keep seeing people shit on this album, claiming to be longtime fans and it's kinda nuts. "Oh I've been listening to them since debut and this ain't it" o-kay, what debut were you listening to because something isn't adding up. This album is quite literally BTS throughout the years, just wrapped up into some more experimental sounds. BTS 2.0, as they said. And indeed, all the non-Koreans (as a white person myself) saying this isn't Korean enough, or commenting on the Arirang sample they used in body 2 body has been so weird. Some people have said that they just don't get it, or that it's unnecessary. I'm not even Korean, but when I first heard Arirang coming in slowly, I got a bit emotional simply because that song made an impact on me when I first heard So Hyang's rendition of it. It's universally touching, and yet so quintessentially rooted in Korean culture. So to comment on it's usage, especially in a negative context, without doing any research first comes across as incredibly ignorant. These people just don't understand that just because they don't "get" something, it doesn't make it bad.

Julianne

I think they ended up merging both Bang PD and the original versions. The original shorter one didn’t have as much stand alone arirang with the built up second verse(? Section). But they kept the more layered “somebody like you” parts in the first part of the Arirang sample (from the original) and also added the call back to RM/jhope after the sample.

Julianne

I also agree with everything you’re saying about BangPDs take. It also gave me the ick bc most of their (BTS) message these days is how it’s they’re just themselves, esp with all of RMs anger in RPWP album (Groin). I’m really glad BTS still have the confidence and power to push back on this and keep as much of their creative freedom as they can

Nayeem Rahc

Yes we got a blend of their two ideas - Bang PD's longer version with no members singing over Arirang and it came back to the I need the whole stadium to jump. The shorter version had the Arirang sample in the background as the members were singing Somebody like you then goes back to I need the whole stadium to jump.

Nayeem Rahc

I remember in Epikase, Tablo jokingly retorted to RM: Are you finished with all your complaints about the company? Something like that 🤭

Nayeem Rahc

I agree as well. A lot of it is marketing strategy which worked -- looking at sales and chart performances, and being talked about and listened to even by GP 🤗

I’ve made the mistake of putting one of my fave groups in a box in regards to expecting a certain sound from them and wanting them to continue their unique storyline in their mvs because that’s what I thought made them special and what drew me to them. I’ve regretted that mistake so much. I learned that not doing what I did will allow you to enjoy your groups, their music, and whatever they put out much more. I now accept changes groups make, and I love what they put out. An important lesson I learned with music is what’s good is good. Boxing them in made me expect them to be a certain way and for their music to go in a certain direction, but that made me not be able to enjoy the vast variety of good songs they put out that didn’t align with my past preferences from them. Also, I don’t understand what people’s problem is with this album. You don’t need to drag it in the mud to make a point. Respectfully, be respectful. After all, respecting isn’t the same as agreeing/liking something/someone. I’ve heard comments claiming this album has no soul behind it. Not that I’m an artist, but I believe music is art (just audible) and so saying that is like saying it doesn’t matter what the art is, that art doesn’t have any intention or any inspiration behind it. Not that everyone would understand the meaning behind it all the time, but it’s that respect that goes into the process and the blood, sweat, and tears as well as the fact that like art, no music is meaningless music

S

Another comment from me: I was actually more worried about any injuries or trauma they could get from the military rather than disbandment. That goes for the other groups I love. I recognize their love for each other and music is so deeply rooted that I don’t believe they’d do anything else until they physically can’t. I’m able to truly trust their words and promises of staying together for a long time, and so far, that has proven to be the best thing I could do as a fan since each of my fave groups has done just that. I think that’s partly why I am so proud to stan the groups I stan. As long as I am in this with them in the long-run, I can continue following their journey and loving every moment with them

WiseSmellyLegs

1:47:20 - This surprises me (when someone says they are not Kpop because of not being “too colorful” or whatever as Kpop MIGHT be known for. 1) Kpop can be anything, so expecting them to be something one’s like does not make sense 2) Kpop groups get old. No one expects 2PM to do music like 10 out of 10 NOW…

WiseSmellyLegs

Well… BIGBANG was supposed to be active as they used to be even after going to the military, but SeungRi made sure their career went on hiatus for 10 years… Besides them, I would say SM groups tend to be truly active even after going to the military or being older than 10 years. TVXQ! but in their case it was not the same most of their time because of JYJ leaving. But Super Junior and Shinee were still fully active just until recent years. But I give you that Super Junior has the benefit of having many members, therefore being able to continue even with members enlisting. So technically only Shinee… BTS being active as a group is definitely possible to happen, but the question is their contracts. They renewed while they were in the military, but I am not sure if they plan to stay with Hybe because of things going in Hybe for the past year(s). I don’t doubt them coming together to release something. But if they are not all under one label, it will be hard to match schedules of 7 members and BigHitMusic

I don't know much about Korean culture, so I am really curious about something that was said about the whole Arirang sample. I am racially Korean, but I grew up in America (adopted by non-Koreans!). I am a TESL minor and something we talked about a lot was the hegemony of English. For me, the shorter version didn't land for me as much as the long version because it felt like it was "hiding(?word choice iffy)" this traditional Korean song with English. If they had released the shorter version, would Koreans have seen it this way? "They put Arirang in the song but put it under English lyrics? What was the point of it then?" also preface: the shorter version wasn't bad like i didn't mind it but like the english on top of the korean kind of threw me off i guess? Also, I was I guess also curious about exactly why putting the longer version of Arirang sample in the song would be seen as it being capitalist greed or whatever if the whole album was already called Arirang and inspired by the Joseon boys. The album itself would've already been "patriotic" as V said if that was the case, so why is the Arirang sample too much then? I genuinely don't know so that's why I'm asking...I'm sorry if this comes off as ignorant that isn't my intention :(((((

I think this documentary was such a smart move. Sometimes I think people forget that these are choices. It was a choice to show Bts arguing with Bang PD and not agreeing abt all the choices. They didnt need to show it, if they didnt want to. I think they knew. They knew this was going to be a debate and people would have different perspectives and this documentary kind of shields Bts from the negativity. It directs certain haters towards Bang pd and Hybe by showing that Bts thought abt the arirang part, thought abt english lyrics etc etc. Its kinda not all their "fault"

Form of Therapy

I would say neither Suju, SHINee, nor TVXQ were fully active ever again. I consider fully active being regular promotions, comebacks 1-2 every year without a pause.

Pika Pika

I think (just from my interactions on Twitter) that ARMY in general (me included) appreciated Bang PDs suggestion to add the extended sample. And we (ARMY) might have the same flaw as Bang PD is the sense that we see them as visionaries, pioneers, vanguard of Korean culture and not just 'artists'.

Cat28

As a white American I think this album was the perfect collaboration of Korean and American. So not all White Americans had issues with it. I loved this documentary and it was needed to see and hear how it was debated behind the scenes. What was important to them, what they liked to hear and also how they interacted with the company was very enlightening to me. My son said the last best song they did was Black Swan and wanted more songs like that. He hates all the autotune and was hoping they would get away from that. That bothered me because you don't have to be such a harsh critic if the album isn't for you. Don't bash it. Music is subjective. It is art. After watching the documentary I understood what they were trying to go for. As true Armies know, there is a song for everyone and an album for everyone. This album will bring in new people. Accept that this may not be your album but it will be for others. I think this is the perfect album for right now. I do wish they toned down the autotune but that is a personal preference and that is what they decided to go with so I will support them. Maybe the next one will have less of it. Personally I would love to hear more songs like "Like Animals" but the live mix not the studio mix. Merry Go Round is a song that speak to me so much. My husband passed away in 2024 at the age of 55. I have been on this Merry Go Round and can't seem to get off of it for the past two years. It is strange how this album has become such a huge debate about so many aspects that none of the other K-Pop groups get. This is the kind of stuff only global icons get hit with. My journey of learning about Korean Culture has been amazing. I love the finished product of Body to Body and I get why Swim was the lead single. It wasn't so different from other songs they have done in the past for me. It is in their "wheel house." I am just happy that we have an album at all from them. I look forward to more and also more solos. Close your eyes, expand your mind, really listen to the songs/lyrics and dance to the music. I am glad to hear a Korean's point of view on the album and look forward to a more in-depth video. Thanks for the reaction.

i think the documentary gives us an idea as to how human bts really are. people are quick to criticise and blame BTS, yet alot of decisions are made or atleast inspired by other people in the company. i think that's something we have to realise, bts aren't robots or ai to get every single thing from concepts to choreography done by themselves. they get help from people in the relevant roles as they should. personally, the documentary made me feel like bts aren't fully confident of where they are at. its understandable to feel insecure and prove people right or wrong. but as a long-term fan, i hope they realise that they don't have to fight. its not a war, not a competition. bts have overcame all of that, and i just hope they keep swimming like the title track mentions. i hope they enjoy what they do, and do what they want. regardless, some people may hate it, but there will also be some who relate to it. its not in their hands, and they should just be themselves, be BTS.

ri

in a way jungkook's role in the team seems to carry a bigger purpose. while everyone was worried or concerned, he was constantly reassuring them and portrayed confidence and stability. in a way he grounded them. it was nice to see how bts really complement one another.

Eliza

Your commentary in the end is so refreshing! Someone said it out loud & I appreciate it. Thank you!!!
