I’m really glad you like this album too, because I also think it’s outstanding and well-rounded in every aspect, both emotionally and musically. As for the production of the album, she first outlined the stories she wanted to express and had lyricists help write them out, then personally selected all the songs to match those lyrics. She started choosing songs as early as May last year and probably listened to no fewer than a hundred tracks. She actually originally wanted to choose “Million Miles Away” as the title track. Starting from “Like A Flower,” she has consistently wanted to use her music to convey emotions and stories that she hadn’t been able to fully share with her fans before. Just like you said, her voice isn’t the typical K-pop diva style, but what amazes me most is her ability to use her voice to express emotion. Especially in this album, you can really feel her confidence in the way she used her voice.

The title track wasn’t my cup of tea this time around, but I loved the album just as much (maybe more) than her first! Black Halo is definitely one of my favorites ❤️

INSANE ALBUM. She mentioned during promotions that she spent over a year listening to 100+ songs to choose for this album. While Like A Flower was curated around the word "courage", Biggest Fan is about her entire journey of her singing/idol career which is why it feels more personal when you listen to it from start to finish. It’s easily one of the most personal and realest k-pop albums i’ve ever experienced. Also, if you have the time, you should watch the dance video for Million Miles Away and the special video for “Love Can Make A Way” (good enough to be a Kulture Study Video!). Sorry for the long comment, but i'm just so proud of her.

I'm not surprised as a Reveluv since Irene may not have been the member that got to shine the most in Red Velvet vocally (how can she with Wendy & Seulgi in the lineup?) but she always added a great foundation and harmony to their songs. Especially on their bsides she got to show her vocals more and got to show some sides of her we now see in this album as well (obviously much more defined on a full lenght solo album). My favourites have to be Face To Face, Wasteland, MTV & Spit It Out btw.

In regards to your ending comments about Irene within Red Velvet, youre absolutely right. She fought for years and years to get people to see her as a vocalist and not just the 'main rapper' or visual. She's said multiple times that she is not a rapper but a singer. Being in a group with powerhouses Seulgi and Wendy doesnt help but shes proved herself beyond expectations imo. Im so happy she has found her voice and that she seems much more confident. Also its taken the member going their solo routes to realize Irene is my true bias within Red Velvet. I feel like ahe has really opened up and let herself be more vulnerable and it really shows. She seems so much more happier in content. Honestly Im a little surprised she was able to do this with SM. That said, I agree this album is a masterpiece and def in my top 3 for aoty.

Sascha

Pretty much 😅 the first three tracks including the title track are my least favourites 😅

Yeah this solo route is making me go “wait is Irene my favorite?” I mean this with zero offense to her, but with the way SM used her in RV I thought she DIDNT like singing and would go SM actor route like Yoona or anyone else. That’s why Like A Flower surprised me and then with this album I realize OH IRENE YOU ARE AN ARTIST AND SM DID NOT LET YOU OUT YOUR CAGE UNTIL NOW I SEE

Artist37

Exactly! And Irene did go actor route briefly in 2021, but then back to Red Velvet promotions and then solo debut. Im not sure if acting is still something she is looking to pursue but I think she has proved herself an all-rounder beyond Red Velvet.

Grant

I really hope SM continues to push her solo career (alongside group activities ofc). I mean she got a whole studio album, but also she’s the only RV member having her solo promoted on her own YT channel. She devoured this album!!!

Carly Zrinyi

Irene said she would’ve liked Million Miles Away as a title track!

Form of Therapy

I think if acting is something she wanted to do she would be in more things, at least one project a year or every other year. I think acting was something she either simply wanted to try or was suggested by the label to try

Artist37

Maybe, but she worked on Double Patty during Wendy's injury hiatus then they went full force back into Red Velvet promotions. She had just renewed contract with SM in 2024 the year of her solo debut. I think music is important to her but I don't think that means she has ruled out acting either. I think with the RV members not all signed with SM now, she may branch out more with lighter Red Velvet group promotions going forward.

Irene really likes to try new things and pushing her own limits and I'm here for it

I LOVE this album!!! Between T.O.P and Irene's albums I am VERY well fed right now haha T.O.P was my first ult when I got into k-pop back in 2012 and Irene has been another ult of mine since she debuted in Red Velvet, I am so incredibly proud of her and I HATE SM for hiding her voice all these years. I say this as a hardcore Irene stan who truly believes she has mastered the k-pop rapping/talk-singing and LOVES her tone when she raps: WHY DIDN'T THEY LET HER SING UNTIL SHE WENT SOLO!!!! Her vocal tone actually reminds me of Lee Chaeyeon (ex-IZ*ONE member, RIP WIZ*ONE's </3) especially in Million Miles Away, they both have this slightly nasally quality to their voices but it's not in a bad way at all, they actually have two of my favorite vocal tones in k-pop given that Chaeyeon is another one of my ults and was always my IZ*ONE bias. Both of their voices are so pleasing to my ears, and I could DEFINITELY see Chaeyeon doing a song like Million Miles Away. ALSO!! Chaeyeon is having a comeback at the end of this month FINALLY!!! I lowkey hope Irene promotes a b-side because her Biggest Fan promotions are already over but I would literally cry if I got to see them interact, I love both of them so much T_T I will leave y'all with a question: If Irene promotes a b-side which would you love to see most? For me definitely Million Miles Away or Best Believe :))

irene is always involved when it comes to her music, she and her team rrally work hard to tighten the theme and make her work very cohesive. this is why i can't help but admire her more. irene is the standard

Rihyusi

this album is really great. Irene;s voice is my favourite in RV and im so happy she finally shine

R E Y

there’s a dingo performance for million miles away btw 👀 and a special mv for love can make a way

Epic slay. Joined your Patreon because I needed to see you loose your mind to this album the way I did. Cheers.

Thank you for the great reaction! This album is definitely full of Irene's message of self-love, growth, and development. Especially with love can make a way. She actually wanted to write the lyrics herself and thought about ideas whilst looking through her journals. This song is an ode to her younger self and the reason why she won't give up. She has released a special MV for the song, which is quite tear-jerking, as well as a dance video for Million Miles Away. Hope you can react to them whenever possible,

Milagros

Thankful for the Million Miles Away and Love Can Make A Way performance videos, but no MTV?? I need it on a spiritual level, Irene!!

Liv

I wouldn’t be surprised if this became my most played album of the year, I had the same exact thought at the end about wasteland playing so incredibly well right back into Biggest Fan when I first listened I got so excited for the infinite amount of times I will be replaying this in its exact album order

Liv

PREDICTABLY I HAD MANY THOUGHTS LISTENING TO THE ALBUM LOL: I could totally see Best Believe being a title track candidate during song selection bc of the slight afrobeat as a follow up first comeback to Like A Flower, but it doesn’t have that extra pop polish LOUD PUNCH for a title track per se or they kept it at that calmer state bc they decided they wanted something new for a comeback, either way I think they made the right choice of Biggest Fan bc of the theming and it’s a great representative of the spectrum of the album concept and songs itself. I also find it so fun that House (in the upgraded modern version) is making a comeback in trend across kpop, it does mark just about 10-11 years since SM pushed for house music with 4 walls f(x) and SHINEE View, music like many trends come in decade cycles so it does seem like the trend is back, ALSO with how well received and viral NAUGHTY by Irene & Seulgi was, I just KNEW we needed Irene on a house song like Don’t Wanna Get Up bc even on shitty speakers you can hear the WARMTH in her voice, which is such a fun contrast to Irene’s usual icy color palette for her visuals and styling

Liv

Face to Face sent me into orbit and oh IVE BEEN SCREAMING INTO THE VOID ABOUT NEEDING MORE IRENE LOW TONE BC WE HAVE GOTTEN GOOD SMALL TASTES OF IN FROM RV OVER THE YEARS so to finally have a full display of it here im so happy and in a song that could’ve easily been handed to a male idol; also, this song made me know FOR SURE that she was at least getting the same level of care and respect as her other idol counterparts at SM like the investment in her as an artist im so glad she’s being taken seriously part of it im sure comes with seniority but also she’s got the goods to back it up. Then you wanna talk about her ability to strike out as individual and understand her basis as solo artist just listen to Spit It Out, bc it’s one thing to have a lightning in a bottle with the first EP, but you make it all the way to spit it out and you just KNOW she’s got the chops to do this for a long time

Liv

Black Halo is so in my wheelhouse of songs, I can see the MV and visuals in my head, just flashes of kneeling helplessly, dropping down in anguish at the altar of Irene, a dark goddess in black dress but in an all white shrine—also something very Zerxus with Asmodeus in Calamity Critical Role about the song for those that know lol—IN CONTRAST, I happened to first listen to the album in my car and serendipitously, during Love Can Make a Way it was sun showering and I started crying 😂 bc it was so fitting I felt the emotion of the song like 10x harder

Evica

you can see how irene really do have a vision for her music and career. i feel like this album really proves that to anyone willing to listen to it. her voice really improved throughout the years and it’s really nice to hear it in different kind of songs. it really suits her vibe and as a reveluv myself , i expect it but at the same time it’s surprising how everything fits perfectly to her vocal tone
