I Felt the same, dissatisfied. Maybe it is because Run It was kinda amazing and we are used to grande with Stray Kids what makes that this song doesn’t satisfy that dopamine rush. I think they should have gone the CORTIS “Fashion” route with this one

See I disagree lol, I think there is an important distinction between 'lazy' and 'laidback' ... Although it is laid back, that was the point of the song, it is a juxtaposition from the lyrics and the message of the track (excess overall like you said and not being satisfied) and the over all album... literally making working non-stop all day and night, doing this and that, running on caffine, appear easy (lazy- I guess).. The production is bonkers, which offsets the laid back feel, but the groove and hook are just sooo dam catchy and satisfying to me... As much as I love their bombastic tracks and am obsessed with 'Run It' I am completely addicted to 'This & That' I knew it would be a much different sound from the pre-release, and I am glad they gave 'Run It' a month to breath cause it would have been too much all at once and invite too much comparision, when they are so so so different (but the message is very much in the same lane). The B-side track 'Farming' which will have a MV is more 'SKZy' in the explosive unpredictableness, and was a title consideration same as 'Run It' and 'After You', and I love that track as well ... however I am so glad they went this route to give something different to the casual listener and the choreo is so satisfying I just wish I could get up and dance like them lol... the MV for 'Farming' has not dropped yet. As Stray Kids said they were trying something new for them, and are not sure how it will be recieved .. an easy listening title track.. but still with Stray Kids signature production... I personally love this track and album, The whole thing shows how they have never stopped experimenting with their sound and genres and no 2 tracks are the same... They will try everything, but that is my opinion and each to their own. The MV Director is actually the same director behind 'LALALALA', 'God'Menu', 'Thunderous', 'Back Door', 'S-Class', 'Maniac', 'Chk Chk Boom' etc ... most of their title MVs and Japanese tracks ... and like other video producers have said it has his stamp all over it. there is a lot of references to these other MVs throughout, as well as heaps of cool easter eggs for STAY... and more modern Korean cultural references in the choice of locations selected from all across the country (I will admit many of these are lost on me lol). I have heard lots of theories about the headless dancers, the most common and ones I quite like is the idea that they are not necessarily the haters but more like fans or people trying to follow them and copy what they do... the facelss masses.... but that is just a common theory. Thank you as always for your reaction.

4:00 - Pro Dude’s mind be like: “It is not Hootie Frutti, so I will not end the recording, but what am I supposed to say??” 😅😅

I really like this song! To me, it's instrumental walks the fine line between being laid back but also a beat that i can move to. I immediately added it to my workout/running playlist. Yes the melody itself is pretty monotone, which i am usually not a fan of, the beat and the instrumental makes it a lot more interesting. Personally, i have really enjoyed when stray kids release songs groovy/laidback songs rather than their typically hard hitting songs such as "do it", "chk chk boom" etc. I find it a very refreshing step away from their typically huge and hard hitting songs, while still keeping elements of their musical identity. As a former Stay, these are they songs that are slowly bringing me back to Stray Kids music, maybe because I am now getting the variety that I was craving before? Idk

My English isn’t that good, so I used ChatGPT to help me put my thoughts into words and explain my points more clearly. This is just my personal theory and interpretation of the song and MV, so I’m not saying any of this is definitely intentional. Also, sorry for how long this got 😭 but thank you so much if you actually take the time to read it! This & That is basically about Stray Kids refusing to choose just one thing. The lyrics keep putting opposites next to each other — like cappuccino or Americano, fast or slow, a coupe or a truck, the stage or the studio — but instead of choosing “this OR that,” their attitude is more like “why not this AND that?” It’s about being confident enough to do different things, show completely different sides of themselves, and not let other people decide what they should be. And I think the sound of the song itself is actually part of that message. Compared to a lot of their title tracks, This & That is much more chill and laid-back instead of huge, aggressive or powerful. To me, that almost feels like Stray Kids saying: “We can do this too. This is us too.” They don’t have to define themselves through one particular sound or one particular version of who they are. They can be loud and powerful, but they can also be relaxed and subtle. Neither side is more “Stray Kids” than the other. That becomes even more interesting when you compare it to their older song N/S. N/S also constantly uses opposites and comparisons, but the entire concept revolves around having to choose between them — north or south, hot or cold, fast or slow. Back then, it almost feels like they were asking themselves which direction they were supposed to take. This & That takes that exact same idea and changes the “or” into an “and.” That’s why I see it as a kind of progression. Back then, the question was which path they should choose. Now, years later, they seem confident enough to say that they don’t have to choose anymore. They can take both paths. They can be this and that, and all of those different sides are still Stray Kids. And I think that’s also why the music video feels like such a huge homage to their previous eras. It keeps bringing back imagery, choreography, locations and symbols that feel familiar from older music videos, almost like they’re travelling backwards through their own history and showing us all the different versions of Stray Kids that got them to this point. The clocks are probably one of the biggest clues to that. One of them literally runs backwards, which to me symbolizes travelling back in time. There are also multiple clocks showing different times, which immediately reminds me of Chronosaurus, where clocks and time are already an important visual motif. So I don’t think the backwards clock is only there for aesthetics — I think it establishes the entire idea of looking back through their past. The cinema could have a similar meaning. It almost feels like they’re watching their own career as if it were a movie. That especially reminds me of the Stray Kids music video, which was already very retrospective and showed them looking back at their journey and earlier eras. Bringing a cinema back into This & That makes it feel like they’re once again watching all the different versions of themselves that existed along the way. There are also much more direct callbacks. Changbin being in a kitchen immediately brings God’s Menu to mind. The heart being held in someone’s hand feels like a very clear reference to CASE 143, where hearts are basically the entire visual language of the song. And CASE 143 itself also plays with the idea of reversing time, which makes that connection even more interesting when you already have a clock running backwards here. The scene with the buses reminds me a lot of District 9. The bus was such an important part of their debut imagery that seeing buses again in a video that is already looking back at their history feels very intentional. There also seems to be a choreography reference to S-Class. There’s a movement where they stand with their legs apart and sharply turn their heads on the beat, which is incredibly similar to the iconic movement from the S-Class choreography. I really like that because it means the callbacks aren’t only hidden in sets or props — they’re even referencing their own old movements and choreography. The raised fist could potentially be another reference. I’m less certain about that one, but it reminds me of the imagery in S-Class, where there are crowds and raised fists, and possibly even MIROH because of its whole theme of rebellion and breaking out of a system. I wouldn’t call that one confirmed, but visually it definitely feels familiar. The black birds — I think they’re crows or ravens — could also be another recurring Stray Kids motif rather than a reference to only one specific video. Black birds have appeared throughout different eras, so they almost feel like another visual element connecting multiple parts of their discography together. And then there are the headless dancers, which might actually be one of my favorite details to interpret. I don’t know whether this has an official meaning, but to me the fact that they are literally headless is really interesting. They have no visible faces, no individual identities and almost become interchangeable bodies in the background. That creates a really strong contrast with Stray Kids themselves. The eight members are extremely recognizable and individual, while the people surrounding them have been stripped of their identity. And that fits the message of This & That surprisingly well. Stray Kids don’t want to be reduced to one identity, one concept or one sound. They have spent their career constantly changing and showing different sides of themselves, but all of those sides still belong to them. It even creates a nice connection back to District 9. Their early work already dealt with ideas like rejecting the identity that other people try to give you and breaking out of systems that expect everyone to be the same. Back then, the message was almost: “You don’t get to tell us who we are.” Now, years later, This & That feels like the more confident version of that idea: “You still don’t get to reduce us to one thing.” So for me, the entire music video almost works like a visual summary of their career. The clock runs backwards. We travel through their past. Old imagery, symbols, choreography and concepts keep appearing. We see all these completely different versions of Stray Kids. And at the same time, the song itself sounds different from what people might stereotypically expect from a powerful Stray Kids title track. Which is exactly the point. All of that was Stray Kids. This is Stray Kids too. They don’t have to choose one identity anymore. They are this AND that.

Loved this interpretation and I am still picking through a lot of visual references myself with this MV ... raised fist could also be a call back to Maniac... and the debris flying around from S-Class and Chk Chk Boom (only instead of falling down like in Chk Chk Boom they fly up cause it is going backwards). I thought of N/S as well when I first heard this ... it is like a grown version, or a response adult SKZ are sending back to themselves ... just choose both, if you can't decide work twice as hard (x2) and you can do it all. I also love how the clocks often stop on 08:01... STAY easter egg hunt continues lol.

I won't fault you on feeling this way - yeah, it has a more laid-back feel compared to previous tracks and doesn't hit quite the same (I agree that I prefer Run It over this), but this might be what the song is about. That they can release both, both the hype song but then a laid-back song, with the same influence. That they don't need to choose which one they need to release to stay relevant. I will say, I also agree the MV wasn't as overwhelming that I didn't need to do a second watch through to catch everything, which is different for me. I do hope you will react to the rest of the album, as you didn't react to the Do It EP. I think the festival version of this song might be more up your alley as it was for me, but I would like to hear your thoughts on the other songs as well.

Marii

this has probably been my favorite skz title track recently! i love how the laidback vibe looks on skz! i also really enjoy the dance to this song. wishing you enjoyed it more so you can check out more skz content 🥲 been missing them around here! hopefully you still check out the album as well as their skz replay pt1 with solos & songs from youtube you’ve never checked out! i think you’d enjoy both of those 1000x more than you did this song! lol

Jo

As a long time stay and someone that constantly suggest pd skz content, I didn’t like the song the first few listens but it started to get catchy. I do think it’s ranked pretty low on my skz title track list. It’s not bad but not my fave. I feel like run it should’ve been the title track. Maybe it’s the order of release bc like it went from high energy run it to laid back. Pd will you check out the album?

yu

since you didn’t like do it very much, i didn’t think you’d like this & that very much either, which is understandable. i’ve been a skz stan since 2019; their sound has changed once for me during gods menu, and they’ve been changing it again since chk chk boom in my opinion. it’s only inevitable that your interest will wax and wane too. personally i like chk chk boom more because there’s more substance, but i still really enjoy this&that. i think it’s sometimes almost…jarring? when skz don’t go their usual style, and i can’t lie that the western style hasn’t probably influenced them, but i still think they have amazing music because they have that “stray kids” element in every song, regardless if it’s up your alley or not. they’ve always been an artist ive respected regardless of the kind of music that comes out and to be honest it’s probably the reason why they’re still my favorite group as of today. the album itself i enjoyed a lot more than ATE. back then and after you are some of my favorite stray kids songs of all time. i would highly recommend still listening through it. this comeback was definitely something that I needed to digest a bit more to enjoy it to its full potential, but stray kids are surfing on the highest level they can right now. i can’t say i don’t miss their old music (i listened to voices for the first time in a while and it was a revelation), but im not mad at their current direction either. maybe they aren’t the young hungry teens they used to be, but i think their character shines through in everything they do so ill probably always be admiring what they do regardless.

SenifyLeah

I am your opinion and I am not. For me, I loved it after the first listening. It's not out that long, I have heard it a lot and now I think it's a bit boring. Felt the same with do it. All title tracks before were banger. Don't get me wrong, I still love parts of the song like Hans part for example but yeah. I just wish I'd still love it as much as I loved it the first week. ;-; And that feeling might be because Run it was such a good song and I love it so much!

Carolina Rojas

I agreed complety with You, but I recommended listening the "this&that remixes" versions, they have many variations that probably like You, I personally like the "cool" and "festival" versión 🤭 give it a chance 🙏🏼

Okay I’m gonna yap for a second 🙂‍↕️ As someone who has been a hardcore fan since 2019 and had not really liked any title track since 'Chk Chk Boom', I feel like SKZ are going in a direction that feels a bit bland to me. The thing that mostly drew me to them was their high-energy, in-your-face music. And it wasn’t even just because they were loud because there were biases that high you just as hard as side effects in the lyricism and musicality. Idk if they’re trying to cater to what’s trending right now for 5th gen especially but FOR ME it’s not working. I feel like if anything they’re losing the people who were with them from the start. In terms of numbers, fewer people have been tuning into their songs in a positive way than perhaps 2-3 years ago. I feel like 3rd/ 4th gen groups are at their best when they do the sound that is closest to their identity. Not that groups can’t evolve of course… but so many bgs NCT, SVT, EXO, SF9, PENTAGON still managed to keep their sound as they got older and evolved with the times. After my first listen to the song I was like EH🤷🏽‍♀️ cause it felt like it didn’t go anywhere and was one note most of the time. Even at signing sections there was no variety which is literally what the song is abt 😭 As you said there a difference between a minimalist song and a song that just doesn't have much going on.

Dassah

On the positive end! This was actually some of my favorite choreo for them in a while The members also seemed to really enjoy this choreo as well so it made the song more enjoyable that just watching the MV! So u should check out some live stages🙃

I actually liked this better than Run it and it has become one of my favorite skz title tracks. I haven’t liked/enjoyed a skz comeback since chk chk boom 😓

Tristana Keauna

I'm sort of opposite... I prefer this one over "Ceremony", but I think it's the production on this one that I enjoy more... While "Ceremony" is great, the production, background sounds etc on this song is just... *Chef's Kiss* The lyrics are.. Valid, but not always my cup of tea in just terms of 'boasting'. The production on the song itself though is just... Amazing. I also love the 'sweating' talk. If someone told Hyunjin that he wouldn't be allowed to sweat anymore, I think that poor man would just combust lol, I will say that while SKZ always have awesome title tracks, my last 'favorite' title track was probably... Lax4 or S-Class.. ... but B-Sides though... for me that's where SKZ have always shone.. and I think for STAY, we tend to look more forward to the B-Sides.. there are those songs to catch 'new' listeners, and then just straight up bangers to keep people listening again.

jennptx

I think the song is okay, but it's towards the bottom for me if I'm ranking songs on the album.
