We've heard that the Squid Game subtitles are pretty atrocious on Netflix. Any recommendations with good subs? We can't check sites like Dramacool or KSHOW without spoiling the show for ourselves :)

Also, how are the subtitles for Sweet Home and Strangers From Hell on Netflix? If these are also problematic, links appreciated!

Subs are fine, just don't choose english CC and youll be good

Ara J

the subs on netflix where just fine for me, but then again i’m in Canada and i rarely look at the subs anyway😂

rockthekazb0t

No apparently the other English subs are bad too, bad choices to change the original meanings

Deb

The subs are actually not that bad. Just use ‘English’ not ‘English CC’ and you’ll be good!

babymetalic

sweet home and stranger from hell subs are fine!! just make sure they arent cc. unfortunately when i watched squid game on netflix the subs were pretty terrible, even when they werent on cc

Kiwi Space

Because I don't speak Korean, I never noticed if the subs are good or not just like with Vincenzo and Netflix, lol.🤣❤

Cameron Swann

It’s a netflix original so i’m pretty sure it’s only available on netflix. The subtitles are mostly fine, i just hear the english dubbed is horrible

randomAlienVisitor

The subs are great, that TikTok was spreading misinformation. They chose the wrong option on Netflix. The subs are correct, the TikTok user chose English CC which is the text for the English language version of the show.

Harley

I didn’t have a huge issues with the English subs (not CC) but you could watch the first episode and see how you feel because otherwise you might be compromising on the video quality

Wendalla

It’s not that bad. It was only some instances when they would translate the general meaning of a sentence instead of going into detail with the translation. It maybe happened 1-2 times per episode. I heard that the “English” option is better than the “English [CC]” one.

The subs have been edited a lot since squid game came out. So, I think you’ll be fine watching it on Netflix. And personally the subs for Sweet Home were also fine😊

elwanday

the subs in Netflix are OK tbh. just make sure you choose the "English" not the "English (CC)" as the English CC is the subs for the dub version and they change it a little to match the mouth's movement. Netflix usually make the English CC the default subs so make sure to check it when you first watch the shows.

Anita Ofokansi

i think the problem was with the cc’s, which ppl mistook for subs and spread around carelessly. the native korean speakers i follow on social media have not found the actual subtitles to be questionable.

Shia

squid game is a netflix original so i'm afraid you won't be able to see it from another legal site:/ the subs are pretty fine for me tho, maybe you can consider using vpn if the subs are not right? bc sometimes the subs can differ depends on the region

Yuna

Actually it’s kinda weird because my subtitles are correct and different from what other people say they have(like Vincenzo for example,my subtitles were different from yours, mines were correct, it said exactly what you said the translation actually was.idk if it has to do on where you live because it doesn’t make sense how different they were after you tried both English subs)(also idk if it has to do on when you watch it because I had watched it way before you did?) But if it really is that bad for y’all you should probably try ‘dramacool’ I think they have the show squid game.

i’ve heard that the english subs are fine, just don’t select english cc. ik people have said both are awful, but i heard that’s been debunked by other people? so i’m assuming they’re the typical level of slightly inaccurate

babymetalic

someone said the subs have been edited since it came out but idk how true that is since i watched it early on. i will say tho that the sweet home and strangers from hell subs are fine, obviously not 100% perfect since its netflix but definitely not terrible like vincenzo

minkit

Reiterating what everyone else said. Ppl saying that the SG subs are horrid is from a tiktok spreading the ENG CC which is based on the ENG dub. The actual ENG sub is much better from what ive heard korean speakers say. Strangers From Hell i finished not long ago and havent seen anyone say anything bad about the subs there. They seemed pretty great to me!!

Cynicalsoulx

I think the English subs are fine. Just make sure the subtitles are on ‘English’ not ‘English CC’. English CC is for the dub version

RobotoMon

It honestly depends on what region your in. I'm from the Midwest and the subs are pretty accurate. But i know that some regions or states have terrible subs

Daniela Padilla

from what i've heard they're pretty good, people where spreading false information about the subs on tiktok.

Suzanne Austen

I can't speak of Squid Game because I have only watched the first episode but from my little knowledge about Korean I think Strangers From Hell eng subs are fine

Chad Williams

I didn’t see much sub issues probably only fluent konglish speakers would but for me they were fine just make sure not to watch the shi**y dub lol

iwi

i watched stangers from hell and sweet home when they were released and the subs were fine. i live in canada, idk if that makes a difference. anyways, squid games is a Netflix original so i don't think you'll find anything on another plateform. and if you do, i think you'd be sacrificing the video and audio quality for better subs. if that's worth it for you, then do as you please. can't wait for friday :))

RobotoMon

if you want it to be a horror special, watch it with english dub. You're ears will start bleeding

Sarah Batt

non korean speakers: it’s not that bad. you’ll be fine 😂😂

Rosa

The person who said the subs were terrible is not a professional translator. It just happened the video went viral. Several professional translators have said the subs are fine, also Korean speakers too. Just remember not to use the English cc, just English subs

Malaki.H

I noticed that the English subs on netflix seems to be only for bad for the US

Shanz

I think the US subs are the problem maybe watch on Netflix but with a vpn?

Ellie

I found the subs pretty good! as always just make sure it's the actual subs and not CC

Petra Fuss

the subs on netflix are just fine, pd

Brianna

From what I could tell the Netflix subs weren’t that bad just translating words like oppa and were a bit off and I also thought they censored the swearing a little in translation.

Karina Kim

I find the subs in Netflix are pretty good

aurora

from what ive heard theyve been updating the subs to be better so its maybe worth watchin on netflix

Phani

Sweet home had really good subs when I watched it. The squid game ones were fine if you use English and not cc, like they’re still a bit awkward but nothing as off as Vincenzo’s were

Anonymous

I didn't see a huge issue with the subtitles on any of those shows, just make sure you choose "English" and not "English CC" Of course there were probably a few minor mistakes here and there but it definitely isn't anything that would stop me from watching the shows on Netflix.

Ivy Jaggers

I am not going to smack a dead horse. But I would like to add that I think the biggest issue is translating culture. There are just something that can’t really be translated into English that are based on the culture. For instance there isn’t a way to translate Hyung into English and a direct translation wouldn’t be right either because you lose the respect that is built into the Korean word. (Which is why most subers just translate it as the person they are talking to’s name.)

Daniel Browning

Sara is right: there are two sets of subtitles: one that is a translation of the Korean, which is good, titled "English", and the other that is a *transcription* of the English dub, which is *bad*, titled "English CC".

jamwam

I personally found the English subs to be good, although I don't speak Korean so take my opinion with a grain of salt lol. The English dub translations however are horrible so if you end up using Netflix I recommend using the normal subtitles and not the English dubbed subtitles.

AH

The actual subs are fine, just don't watch the English CC (closed captions) as they're created off the dub, which is less than accurate. The whole thing was blown way out of proportion and most of the complaints were based off the CC Subs not the actual subs.
