I'm really hoping for RIIZE and Ateez aswell 🙏 But DAMN did I wait for this! Gonna watch it immediately, I'm so curious what you think of their debut. Chiquita has made such incredible progress in a short amount of time imo, I love her confidence and facial expressions! I recommend this performance video that dropped today: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kmwrN2HDgJs . Straight fire

Amanda Bernström

This is not about baby monster but since you said you are checking out The Rose.. For their HEAL album, they have MVs for Sour, Cure and Childhood. And for their DUAL album they have MVs for Back To Me, Alive, You’re Beautiful and Wonder.

ethan

Ahyeon missing from the debut was DEFINITELY a huge missing factor for me, but I think the future for them will definitely be bright once she's back

bastoo0

This debut was extremely poorly received internationally and it was even worse in Korea. I wonder if YG is gonna bother with this group now that Blackpink's contract renewal is no longer a threat and if BabyMonster's next comeback doesn't do better. That'd be a waste but maybe YG could learn to manage their groups properly if the financial losses are important...

Harley

I personally feel like new gen of kpop is transitioning away from what YG has traditionally done and that’s why a lot of people generally felt the song was weak for a debut. I think the first verse of the song is incredibly strong in terms of the girls vocals but then it kinda went flat when the chorus starts. Also I will note someone did make a mashup of this song with WJSN Boogie Up and it does sound good together lol

Hrathen

Well they just announced that they holding auditions in January and that they "will not stop until they've found successors to BIGBANG and Blackpink"

Hrathen

Wdym? This is classic BP sound, a bit weaker true, but they don't have the force of personality nor personal age BP have built up over the years to pull the song off. Honestly I'll hold off final judgement until a cb

bastoo0

Yeah I've seen that one. Given YG's usual training period, I'd say we are looking at a new girlgroup in 3 to 5 years. So that doesn't sound like a direct threat to BabyMonster but YG could very well skip this current generation (BabyMonster) if Blackpink brings enough to the table...

Theia

I just can't take the song and lyrics serious. The girls are simply to young to have the right charisma and energy for this kind of concept. "I’m on a mission Don’t need permission No matter what I’m gonna make my own decisions." Girl, you're 16! You need permission and adult supervision!

Harley

I agree with you and I’m not sure if what I said confused you lol. I meant in this new wave of kpop even any music Blackpink makes is not generally seen with these new groups. Girl crush which YG has been famous for being the front runners of with 2NE1 and BP is slowly dying out. Blackpink are the only group that if they release music still like this it’s generally received well because it is BP I also think it was just a bad decision to 1) do a debut without every member present 2) have the debut delayed due to “quality” and then release this MV which a lot of people have said is lacking 3) only have one song as the debut. I feel like they should have had at least a bside that could have showed a little more because let’s be honest the general public is not looking up their predebut stuff unless they’re fully interested in the group

WiseSmellyLegs

The article was in Korean meant like: “Should we find the successors of BIGBANG & BLACKPINK?” Rather than making this kind of statement on their own. Basically they just used it as a buzzword. And as it is already mentioned by someone else, making auditions doesn’t mean debuting a new group any time soon.

pmreez

I feel like the song didn't do the girls justice. They're talents have been on display since the show, and of course they did well with what they were given but it was them elevating the song but the song did nothing for them imo

Lia

No wonder Choi hyunsuk has writing credits on this one cuz ruka's part is so suk CODED!

WiseSmellyLegs

Well… to be fair based on this kind of point of view it would be hard to take seriously most of the Kpop scene. I mean… there are songs about feeling love in basically any possible way and for a long time those lyrics were not written by the idols, so one could say they cannot take the whole Kpop seriously just because of that

bastoo0

I mean, kpop agencies have normalized debuting 14 years olds and idols expire once they hit 21 (in the eyes of Korean fans, at least) so I'd say 16 is not that bad 😂

pmreez

The thing I like about Treasure was that they always seemed like a deviation from YG. Yeah they still have the tropes in their titles etc but even then it always felt slightly off from other YG groups, especially with songs like BOMB not even being a title track but extremely popular. I was hoping the same for BM, not just BP 2.0 exactly. It comes across as a song they didn't use for a BP album rather that making something new specifically for BM.

Alex P

My issue is that they've debuted these girls without a concept. From the song to the video to even their group name, the only concept we are being given is that they are young and talented and that they're employed at YG. Those things are all true, of course, but it doesn't feel like it's enough. I really hope that we don't have to wait forever for more content from them, and that they come back a complete group with a flavor of their own. The girls are amazing young performers and they deserve to have YG promote them properly.

Form of Therapy

There you go. To be fair, they debuted with a concept: "baseball" But they didn't have the "ok but what's the GROUP concept?" I 100% believe Yang Hyun Suk did this on purpose because he's him. There's no Ahyeon... I feel like the "true color" of the group will be actually realized in a comeback or two.

L

idk, these are actually some of the most 16-year-old coded lyrics I’ve ever heard

WiseSmellyLegs

There are no live performances or any big bonus material beside behind the scenes of shooting the MV. YG Ent. doesn’t promote them at all and the fact the album (which has already been recorded and was supposed to be released for the debut) has not been released is not because of the typical “YG strategy”. YG Ent. just doesn’t know at all what to do with this group. The main reason is both YG Ent. and Yang Hyun Suk didn’t expect Yang Hyun Suk ending up in jail. And since Yang Hyun Suk apparently was not just the “regular executive producer” of this group, but it was more like this is his project top to bottom, YG Ent. didn’t know what to do without him with this group, so they “just debuted them, so people don’t have to wait anymore, but that’s it”. Long story short: Although Yang Hyun Suk came back to YG Ent. after he won all those lawsuits and Baemon was announced, a few months ago it was announced that the Korean court decided to re-open the case of him against Han Seo Hee (the former YG trainee, who provided substances to T.O.P and B.I and later on she snitched on T.O.P, who tried to take his life because of the situation after that and then she snitched on B.I as well…), where Yang Hyun Suk was involved in this case in the way that he was accused of covering up for B.I back then. And since he won this case once, YG Ent. and him thought he would win again (also in general opening this case again was a bit useless. I mean I would understood it if the case wasn’t closed yet, but Han Seo Hee was found guilty and she is in jail already and this whole thing won’t help her anyhow, so it seems more like someone there in Korea doesn’t like Yang Hyun Suk and they just wanted to get him into jail at least for some time and for anything they could…). But he lost and he should be in jail for 6 months. That’s why the song and music video don’t have the direction as you said or vision in general. Yang Hyun Suk is credit on the song, but this is definitely not the title track they were planning. Actually during summer they prepared one and then later on they announced they were not sure, so they shot another one (so it seemed like two title tracks as it used to be in YG during their big era) and in general they were really picky with the songs for the album. But this really seems like YG Ent. just decided to debut them after all rather than waiting for another bigger amount of time, so they just chose a b-side from the album, which was probably the most in the way like: “let’s play it save”, because it sounds a lot like Teddy’s song for BLACKPINK, but without Teddy being involved 😅😅 because he is actually not involved in this project anyhow. And then they recorded this MV, which is cool, but not really shocking. And obviously the situation with Ahyeon being inactive since the start of summer didn’t help the whole situation as well. I mean, sure YG may have been postponing their debut so much, because they didn’t know how the renewal with BLACKPINK would end up, so they wanted to keep this debut as their “wild card for the stock market”, but beside that Ahyeon being inactive played its role as well. And not just because she is popular and really the “core member”, but it would be similar with another member as well. They really presented them as the “7 ones, who made the journey together”, so they didn’t want them to debut without any member, although the situation made them do it anyway… (There are people saying she left for good. I do believe she is just not doing okay, otherwise they would re-record the album without her and just for the public said: “she will comeback”, but since they didn’t want to release the album, it does feel like they don’t want to re-record it and they want to keep the album for the moment once they are all 7 again). I forgot to give my feedback/opinion. Well… my expectations were high and I was overhyped, because I was so into their pre-debut content. And the thing is Batter Up doesn’t let them shine enough. Asa and Ruka (fans call them RnA as RNA) are the MVPs there for their rap lines, but the rest is weirdly not being able to shine the way they shone in Last Evaluation. Not even dancing-wise… there are no “wow moments”. Also for some reason the vocalists have sprechstimme (the talk singing) lines rather than being able to use their vocals fully. Also regarding Chiquita I was curious about her rapping. Like when Yang Hyun Suk said she started to learn to rap as well, I was confused, because the key thing that set her apart from Lisa was the fact she was a vocalist and not a rapper. But since Ahyeon is missing, I was thinking Chiquita could show her rap skills as Ahyeon was able before, but she did not… Beside the rap parts I started to appreciate the festive YG-like outro, although it is not something new. But all in all… I don’t know man… they should have let them debut right after the Last Evaluation. I know Yang Hyun Suk wanted to train them even more to be above perfect, but the show was pre-recorded like at least 8-10 months from the airing time. So they had to got better already… They would have debuted right after the show and although Ahyeon would have gone inactive anyway soon after the promotions, I would have been fully okay to wait the whole year for the first comeback (it would be probably around a year, because of Yang Hyun Suk’s situation would have happened anyway and as it seems now Ahyeon is not coming back any time soon, so she might actually comeback at the time as Yang Hyun Suk will 😅😅), because I would have been waiting with the correct and probably perfect debut (even if the album wasn’t released anyway for the “YG typical marketing” and it would have been just a digital single). As it is now… I don’t know even more… I hope Ahyeon comes back and so does Yang Hyun Suk and says: “As Treasure had their Reboot, which is basically a start of a new era for them, Baemon is actually having a new start, which is basically their redebut/restart” and they will release the album! I am somehow glad they debuted, because I wouldn’t want them to be another Team JYP (of LOUD 😬😬), but I was thinking they could postpone the debut by doing unit debuts. Yang Hyun Suk mentioned this will happen anyway in the future. So I was thinking… since Ahyeon was the type of member, who could be added to any formation and lift it up, why didn’t they do units formation without her and then make a debut with all members and her as well. Basically doing another “Loona-like Avengers debut” 😅😅 Like for example just Ruka and Asa or with Chiquita as well. Then formation of 2 vocalists with one rapper and then with the another 2 ones with the second rapper. Basically every month one unit like this would debut, promote it on music shows, so people will be aware of them and it would help to build up the hype even more and at the same time people would know this is not the final formation yet. And everything would be released digitally, but later on it would be included on the album with the rest of the songs, so you would get a big album with these (let’s say) “bonus tracks” and to keep Ahyeon in mind, she would have her solo song there, since she wouldn’t be in any unit formation. That’s all I have on my chest 😅😅 Thank you for reading 🙏🏽🙏🏽 As a bonus content I recommend the Baemon reaction to the Yang Hyun Suk’s announcement of the final line up, it always brings tears to my eyes. And then probably the Jenny from the Block dance cover.

WiseSmellyLegs

I am afraid Yang Hyun Suk is not behind this decision at all. I spent 30+ minutes writing my comment, where I say more… But I do agree their true color is yet to come in the future with everyone being back (and that is meant for Yang Hyun Suk as well)

yuta

wasn’t a big fan of this song i just feel like the style of music yg producers are doing is just boring and repetitive now

gen a *

I have a lot of frustration with the lack of Baemon promotions on YG's end but I wouldn't say they don't know what to do with Baemon. They've had these girls as trainees for 4+ years and a lot of consideration went into who would be in the final lineup, I mean we almost didn't get Rora and Asa which is CRAZY to me!!! I think YG doesn't want to give them a definitive sound/concept until Ahyeon comes back because recently there was a tracklist leak which showed that their next cb (or two) could be a full album with 8 songs. I can kinda see what YG is going for but if that's the case then I wish they would've debuted the girls all together; it's going to detrimentally affect the group when the (rumored) leader and center is missing.

Form of Therapy

I’m sorry WHOA I am so out of the loop I had no idea Yang Hyun Suk is in JAIL?! It explains the “huh this hits all the YG notes but lacks… direction”

WiseSmellyLegs

@gen a *, well the leaks may not always be correct. That is important to keep in mind. Actually from my experiences leaks like this are just hardly ever correct, but neither of us have any way to proove one or the other. You are correct about the decision over Rora and Asa, but that was done by Yang Hyun Suk as well. I mean… they had been trained for many years, but the project got into the motion once Yang Hyun Suk was back. In the Baemon’s reaction video to the announcement of the line up, you can see YG’s staff being there on the side as well and from their reactions it didn’t seem like they knew what Yang Hyun Suk was about to say. I don’t want to say YG Ent. cannot do anything without him, but it is like they don’t know if they may/should do anything, since Yang Hyun Suk really wanted this to be his thing

ByFeuer

sadly there isnt much promotion from yg (probably because ahyeon aint there) they uploaded a dance performance and live performance on yt if you want to check that out

John Arendse

Can anyone tell me the last time overhype killed a kpop group because this group is in danger of that.

希文 王

prefacing with this is not criticism towards the girls: the song is a repeat of the formula YG/Teddy/BP has been doing for years. even down to the debuting/releasing one song and calling it a day. BP at least debuted with two.

ayskaya007

I love this song. There will always be something people don't like. From the beginning of the song you can hear that it's YG and that suits me. I wish the girls great success. They already have me as a fan. I wish everyone a lot of smiles and less anger :)

Guthwulf

they released an extended three part behind the scenes for this music video. Might be interesting to get your producer's perspective on what we see there.

Khai-Y Le

btw idk if it's my terrible listening skills but ahyeon's name is pronounced more 아현 :3 i keep hearing it as ah-yeon and it's throwing me off but it could just be me 😭😭

I am sorry for sharing misleading theories/thoughts based on incorrect informations. Yang Hyun Suk was sentenced to 6 months of imprisonment AND 1 year probation, but his sentence was SUSPENDED and so the probation has started. So he is not in jail and unless he breaks the law during the probation, he even won't be...

TO ANYONE READING THIS IN THE FUTURE/TO THOSE WHO WENT BACK TO REWATCH THIS REACTION AND ARE SCROLLING THROUGH THE COMMENT SECTION: I am sorry for sharing misleading theories/thoughts based on incorrect informations in previous comment of mine. The song is good. I'm not going to call it 10/10 because there are some things I wished were different, but overall I'm very satisfied with the result. It's catchy and it will still hold up when they are further in their career. The chorus maybe sounds a bit too much like Lisa's Money. It sounds very much like a YG song (which is good for me because I love the YG sound), but with that, they kind of failed to let Baemon have their own unique sound right from debut. I remember YG stating that WINNER's music needed to be completely different from BigBang because they were YG's new boygroup and he wanted them to be unique and that worked. Now Baemon is getting compared to Blackpink and I understand why. It might be too similar to Blackpinks music which is a shame because the Babymonster members have such unique voices and they don't sound like BP at all. And that's my second regret with the song. Their unique vocals don't stand out enough because there isn't enough singing in the song. They sing in the pre-chorus and that's kind of it. The verses are talk-singing and the chorus is empty. It would have been cool if they debuted with a bside that showed of their vocals more. (something RnB!) (they did release Stuck in the Middle and that really showed of their vocals so i'm over the moon) Hyunsuk from Treasure probably wrote Ruka's rap and It sounds really damn good. It has that natural flow like you said and it fits Ruka really well. Asa wrote her own rap and I'm happy Asa was able to fit her fast style of rapping in the song. I really love it alot. I like the YG ending, I like that it's a song fans will be able to party to and chant to together with the members at the end. It has a fun vibe that's shown with the members smiling while performing the choreo in the MV (especially Chiquita!) The MV is fun and, just like the song, will hold up well in a few years. It's a bit all over the place though, it's like they wanted to show as much as possible and forgot to make it narratively coherent. It's lots of cool sets that don't really have anything to do with eachother. I do think the the two themes in the MV were clearly 'Youth' (the classroom, the school bus, the uniforms, baseball) and 'New Beginnings' (Batter Up, the broken egg, the broken cage, the defrosting of the ice (I'll admit that one's a stretch lol). I'm happy it's so crowded though... After watching the teaser I was really worried it would be like 3 sets in a white void, so I was relieved watching the MV It's like they wanted to show Baemon is all YG artists in 1 MV. Treasure's MMM for the dance set, 2NE1 for the stadium set, the white void with big set pieces for Blackpink, the monster truck and fur coats for Bigbang, Ikon's RHYTHM TA for the baseball/basketball vibes... (no winner or akmu though :p). This would have worked better if they announced Batter Up as a pre release. They should have, they did no promotion for it... + YG called their comeback on April 1st with Ahyeon their actual debut so...?? conclusion: I like it, but I'm sad they didn't promote it in any way and we indeed have yet to see their personality and colour as a group. (I'm sure we'll get that when they start promoting though)
