I started this holding my breath knowing damn well he's gonna get so attached to Rocky (as we all are)

Cheyenne Talbot

Finally! They literally used no CGI for this movie. Also, you missed my favorite Rocky line. When Grace is going to gather and Rocky says: "Words of encouragement " and Grace says: "You can't just say 'words of encouragement'" and Rocky is like: "Words of great encouragement ". I use it all the time, lol. And you have to watch it a few more times because every time you learn more and pick up more. They live on Erid which is Rocky's planet. Adrian is his mate. My favorite movie ever.

my fav reactor watching my fav movie of the year??? holy fucking shit. no one even look at me for the next two and half hours.

And now you see why I'm so obsessed with this movie!! 1. When you talked about grace sending thr other astronauts to space etc there's actually a really beautiful scene in the book that I wish had somehow made it into the movie but didn't but basically grace says “I commend your body to the stars.” as he sends them off of into space and i just think it's beautiful 2. I agree this is Ryan’s best movie. And he was actually a producer on this too and helped it for the 6 years it took to make it so I think you can really tell how much of a passion project this was for him. 3. There's so much I love about this movie from the hopecore and optimism in humanity to the poeticness of the thing that's killing the planet also being the thing that saves them. 4. I'm sure you'll get flooded with fun facts at some point so I'm not going to go into to too much but most of this movie was practical which is really cool. Rocky was a puppet for a lot of the scenes and his head puppeteer was the voice actor! 5. I know you're sad about not seeing this in theaters but the movie is expected to be nominated for several awards this upcoming award season and I suspect this might mean it will end up in theaters again at some point. Especially since during its actual theater run it kept getting extended bc people kept showing up.

The way I RAN to this when I saw the email lmao. This was not only my favorite movie of the year but one of my favorite movies in a very long time. It's one of the rare cases where I actually prefer the movie to the book (a combination of just thinking it's an amazing adaptation and the visuals and the fucking incredible score that make a whole *experience* and it focusing on more of the themes that personally speak to me in comparison to the book and not necessarily loving Weir's writing style) but I would highly recommend reading the book at some point as well, if only for the fact that it'll give you so much more context for the movie and the characters. (The audiobook is a *fantastic* way to do this. The voice acting is truly top notch.) The stuff that you touch on in the outro, in particular the awful, wonderful discussion that comes with the moral implications of everything Stratt did and Grace wanting to save himself over the world is very much expanded upon in the novel and I think really allows you to understand the weight of some of the decisions even more. I'm so glad you loved this as much as I did: it was such a joy to rewatch (yet again) with you!

Tomasina

Fist my bump 🤣🤣 Rocky deserves the world ❤️ Also if this gets rereleased you should definitely see it in the theater

Early in the film, there is a label that identifies the probes as "Beetles." Since there were four of them, Grace named them after the Beatles. "Two of Us" is one of my favorite Beatles songs; it's a duet between John and Paul on the "Let It Be" album.

Ana 🌸

just finished rewatching with you and this confirmed this is my fave movie this year!!!!! so good

Desiree Mclaughlin

At the end they’re on Erid, not Adrian. Rocky mentions Adrian meaning his mate. 🙂 Loved the reaction. This movie is fantastic. Everything from the acting to the visuals to the music. Love it one every level.

Bunny

"imagine waking up and you're in space...Katy Perry's dream." LMAO

Michael Beveraggi

I just rewatched and the words of encouragement line got me good!! Have a feeling I’ll be rewatching this one a lot 😁🪨

Grabbing the book asap!! Also I’m so glad they used the puppeteer as the voice actor! He feels connected to Rocky. And if i had to hear some celebrity voice like Paul Rudds or something like it would’ve been a little distracting to me

ariel

you should give the audiobook a try too! it's amazing!

Nikki

I LOVEEEE this movie! It was so fun to read the book afterwards. You made my day Michael thanks so much for the perfectly timed upload!!

LOVE that you reacted to this, I was sooo hoping! I had your EXACT reaction--I would do anything for Rocky, Rocky forever, no pain for Rocky, purest life form in the galaxy! Things I love (the soundtrack & casting & Rocky obvs): -> The pictures he sets in the crew's hands will stay there unless they run into something. They'll be holding those pictures forever -> When Rocky asks what the word is for what amounts to brave, and Grace says 'dumb,' he still writes in 'brave' which pays off at the end, because one of the last things Rocky says to him is 'Grace bravest human I have ever met.' Which would have been 'dumbest' otherwise! -> I also tell myself that maybe he forgives Carl (who is a composite of multiple characters from the book) because he's the last person Grace saw before he passes out, but he does the same 'clap' thing on Erid while teaching. Because I want him to heal <3. Also in that scene in the book they tell Grace that they've started to see that the sun from his solar system has brightened again. I'll have to see if you did Hadestown yet!
