I'd be lying if I said I didn't make this in response to another video but I'll take the specifics to my grave.

This computer is genuinely incredibly cool and I love it. It was also backbreaking to produce, so: please enjoy!

I really appreciate this hitting my feed right now. I've been having an EXTREMELY BAD mental health couple of days and just came out of a massive panic attack so seeing this hit my Patreon feed feels like a warm blanket being wrapped around me in a way I really needed right now. Thank you Gravis for all the stuff you make.

This laptop is so rad, but Im very curious about the random Pachinko machine

cathoderaydude

I picked it up at goodwill a few weeks ago and then when I was staging this video there was some crap in the background I couldn't easily hide so I put the pachinko machine in front of it lmao

That _is_ a very nice design and form factor for the high end non-power user demographic. It's not unlike the 2017 iMac I recently rescued from e-waste. To be clear...as a sysadmin and long time linux-only user, I've been staunchly anti-Mac for years...but this iMac has been growing on me the more I use it, and is well suited to its role as a compact, reliable DAW sitting on my Kawai digital piano/MIDI workstation.

DeScruff

Honestly I kinda dig the form factor! It just kinda reminds me of how I see most people actually use their laptops. - Usually living on a desk always plugged in just like an AiO, occasionally moving it to a different room. And I could see someone who owned this having it live on their computer desk 90% of the time, but every now and again moving it to watch a TV show while in bed.

Yeah, for some reason, at least in Australia, computer screen sizes have always been in inches. The weirdest part is that we used to measure CRT TVs in cm, but as soon as Plasmas entered the market in the early 2000s, the industry switched to inches.

Dan Ch

Another stellar video, most shocking watching your relevation regarding the screen size in US vs. elsewhere in inch/cm 😄Everybody in the world measures laptop screens (and LCDs, and CRTs), in inches but TVs are for some reason measured in cm or both (at least in the EU, even 21/24" TVs that can be used as monitors...)

Matt Whitehorn

As an Australian, screen sizes is one of a very small number of things that is pretty much ubiquitously measured in imperial here - I know I have a 40" TV and a 27" monitor - but if you told me the cm figures I'd just give back a blank stare, it's not a number I have any concept of. I think screen sizing is more like buying something like shoes - there's just a weird measurement size system for that one product, and you just accept it.

56:45 "wireless USB was lost in the chronicles for what reason" was a question that came into my mind a few times already, but never followed up the topic. i remember a lot of hype about it around 2005 at Comdex and CeBIT, even later with the prospect of porting it to USB3 on 60GHz(?). Astonishingly, i never saw real world products appear on shelves.

adorfer

52:43 "WHY?" - "Because we can!"... cartwheeling a dorm multimedia all-in-one into a starbucks, watching a terrestrial teleshopping channel with an indoor TV antenna....

adorfer

47:58 "newgrounds flash game". that blast from the past came unexpected!

adorfer

44:34 "looks like a ward of duct tape": Will add this to my lists of colloquial insults.

adorfer

what a shame, that this media remote did not catch on (honestly, it catched, but dell sabotaged it as best as they could). now we are stuck with smart phones, remoting everything.

adorfer

I adore the amount of work and details in these videos!

Saving Intel iMacs from ewaste is a civic duty IMO, they definitely fulfill their niche today as well as they did in the 2010s.

Cyber

Thank you for another great video! I actually would've buy something like this but with modern specs.

zephyrmo

Great video as ever. Putting things into their original designed context is so important and it's something nearly everyone else misses.

gotyaoi

They put a slot loader drive where a top loader would have no problem. That's... some kind of flex.

Loading_M_

I suspect most products that implemented it did so without telling host - e.g. they provide their own USB receiver, and just claim it's connected by a wire. To be honest, wireless USB doesn't really appear to have any outstanding features compared to Bluetooth, which was released about 3 years earlier.

cathoderaydude

I have not looked into wireless USB, but what little I know about Bluetooth suggests that you need a distinct Bluetooth device profile for every single kind of thing your gadget can do, or you're looking at developing something on top of a generic interface which nobody seems to want to do, whereas I assume wireless USB would just let you pass do any of the millions of pre-existing USB devices that came in every flavor under the sun. Could be wrong, but if I'm not, then that seems like a pretty huge advantage IMO

Myst

What a cool machine. Truely, dell was the best and worst of the big manufacturers.

WizardTim

The Bluetooth button on the side makes me think it can act as a Bluetooth source as well as a sink, possible even when powered off. Even today almost nothing supports dual mode and multi-point Bluetooth despite how useful I find it, really needs much better GUI support in consumer OSes.

_Pai

I'm surprised they didn't have the option of forgoing the component/audio/tv tuner dongles by offering a docking station. That way you could leave everything hooked up to your TV while you take the machine elsewhere. Also it would have been cool to see what would have undoubtedly been the world's largest dock.

Penny Unwise

I don't know how the same company could design and manufacture this work of art, and then a few years down the road release my XPS 9570. "Lemon" doesn't begin to cover it.

Penny Unwise

Great video as always. With how hard Dell fell off in the early 10s, it's nice to go back and remember something they really delivered on.

Aidan Rayner

This reminds me of a Sony VAIO I had to fix at my Saturday job when I was like 16/17 - I can't remember the model number but it was a 21.5" AIO that ran Vista (IIRC?) and it had a battery in it. I remember having to move it across the room so I just unplugged it, waltzed it on over to the other side, plonked it back down, and it didn't skip a beat. Would love to know what it was as it was a pretty sweet machine.

_Pai

It would have been part of the Vaio L series which ran for several years from the Vista era to Windows 8. In true Sony fashion they always had some wild ideas. Just searching old reviews I found a model with touch controls on the display bezel like the Dell Z600 Gravis reviewed in Quick Start (VPC-L21S1E), a model with an extra video processing chip from a Bravia TV (SVL24114FXB), and even one with a 3D display from when companies were convinced that 3D TVs were the future (VPCL22V1E). Would be cool to see a review of one if there's any still floating around but since they're AIOs there's a higher then usual likelihood that they've become ewaste already.

Charlotte

Oh my god the moment you fold the screen down to unveil the "The Showstopper" headline, amazing :D

Xaviette Katzenfrau

I would genuinely love it if I had the Blu-ray version of this, I'd use it all the time.

Shane Baker

spot on! i like the comparison to shoe sizes haha. apart from back in the day buying CRT TVs, i recall those being advertised in centimetres. my first TV was 34cm, then later 68cm. thought that was huge! though CRTs probably were sold in inches before my time

John Kiniston

Man, the reveal at the end was just perfect.
