This took SO MUCH LONGER THAN I EXPECTED and I made SO MANY MISTAKES.

Let it be known that I almost screwed up incredibly bad by trying to squeeze this whole process in at the end of the previous video. I was convinced, for some reason, that it would take like 45 minutes tops to mod this thing and that I could just do it in the office and tack it on to the end of the previous video. I have no idea what is wrong with my brain.

Obviously drive-by diagnoses by internet strangers are bunk, but maybe sharing a little anecdata is ok? ‘Oh, I have 5 minutes left before I need to be on my way, I'll squeeze in ‹pet project du jour›’ —one hour later— ‘OMG I'm nowhere near finished on my project’ is a thing that used to happen to me constantly, and I link it to my (diagnosed) ADHD. It doesn't happen to me as often now. I still get that feeling that tells me ‘this will be quick’, I've just learned not to trust it and go by ‘it's ok, I'll just arrive a little early’. I never actually do, but nowadays I arrive barely on time most of the time, which I consider a win. I don't know if that's what's wrong with your brain, but that's what's wrong with my brain.

Love the video. Even though I wasn't involved with the development of the edge I can say I'm really happy with what you've done with it. It looks better than my "improved" niveus gear. I actually considered trying to buy one of these on ebay and repeat your process but I really don't have that large of a desire to own a 360 of any kind. I am perfectly happy with my steam library running on Linux with quiet (but not quite silent) home-built PC.

Is that MSI motherboard box a sneaky Quick Start teaser?

Twenty After Four

BTW I really appreciate your thoughtfulness and attention to detail / workmanship. If Niveus had you working for them back in the day (and perhaps better management) the company might have had a chance.

Really enjoyed the content, subtly irritated by you looking at someone 1-2 chairs to the right of me... 👀 😁 Was the camera / control monitor more offset than usual?

had to buy in to get this video early, great content gravis

Nope, and I use a teleprompter in front of my camera lens so I don't know why this keeps happening. I can't see it, myself. Are you sure you aren't seeing my lazy eye?

Also, I'm so sorry that you didn't get to give the cooling tower a do over. I get why you decided you shouldn't do it but man that must have stung. Anyway, that's a badass Xbox 360 🙇

Eric

During your outro explanation I couldn't help but be reminded of that pithy quote: "Any idiot can build a bridge that stands, but it takes an engineer to build a bridge that barely stands." I guess the only people who have to know the exact TDP of their system and dissipation characteristics of their thermal solution are the people who need to mass manufacture two million of them and still make the Q3 profit numbers look good. Everyone else can just tape a thermal mass the size of a crockpot to it, slap a $1500 price tag on it, and bob's your uncle. Rad video as always 😆👍

The message that comes up when using a drive with mismatched keys is actually a small DVD video partition at the beginning of the disc that’s meant to appear if you try to put a game in something other than a 360. In this case, because mismatched drives can play DVD video just fine, it only sees that partition and plays it instead.

Having caught the stream for this...oh man, I know Niveus kinda made this as a hackjob, but what I wouldn't give to have a chassis like this for my launch model PS3. Shockingly still works, just sounds like a damned windtunnel sitting at the XMB with even a repaste and cleanout. That said, I'm sure the 360's a simpler thing to keep cool and the PS3 probably would have easily pushed a chassis like this to its limits if not blow right past said limits.

If you think that those cooling surfaces are bad, then I'd have to show you how Dell's official cooler for my 10900X looked like. You would hate it and find it very amusing at the same time.

"Everyone else can just tape a thermal mass the size of a crockpot to it, slap a $1500 price tag on it, and bob's your uncle." That does sort of sum up Niveus in a nutshell.

Armin

No, I wasn't aware of that. If I look at your face it's just the impression I get. Even if I cover either half of your face. Realistically I would say there can hardly be enough information in those few pixels to make that deduction, but human vision is weird that way. I guess if I'm not the only one commenting on this and you wanted to get further statistical feedback, you could record looking at 3-5 different focus points while talking and have people reply, which one felt centered. That might result in offset info you could use in your static shot setup.

The PlayStation shirt in an XBox video is very amusing.

Funny, I actually had 3 SilenX fans in my very first PC build. I bought them because they were white fans in a black body, which matched my black-and-white case. All 3 of them lasted more than 10 years. Didn't move much air, but they were pretty quiet.
