Another side channel video. Hopefully nobody minds the Patreon notifications; these are definitely lower quality than my typical output but idk, I figure a lot of people just like hearing me talk.

Yes, we have a Goodwill computer store here in Tallahassee, but it focuses on reselling used Dells and game consoles. The good stuff usually ends up on shopgoodwill.com

Don't apologize for anything you put out! These are super fun and laid back and I love it

Molly Howell

You always have interesting stuff to show (regardless of how interesting you yourself think it's going to be, lol), so no, I don't mind one bit.

I was hooked at “Microscope”. I work for TFS and we specialize in SEMs. Usually, we have a couple of HP Z-line workstations bundled with the system. One being the microscope control interface and the other one being the gateway/firewall to the outside internet. You’d have a shared folder inbetween them to get the pictures out. This was even true 15 years ago, no physical media involved. Some 3rd-party detector manufacturers bring their own PC, which gives them control over the environment their SW runs in.

I love all the vids you make tbh c: The laidback ones are less structured, but the remind me of when my friends were super excited about a random gizmo they found and they just wanted to gush about it. Its cozy

Anyone know about the “Goodwill computer stores” on the east coast mentioned in the video? Would love to add to my map in case it’s anywhere near my universe—md, pa, md, va, etc.

I've never been to one, people just tell me they exist. The link i accidentally sent in another message is a list of ostensible locations, and it appears that they aren't separate buildings, and goodwill doesn't seem to list them anywhere; you just have to KNOW that certain stores have "ComputerWorks" sections. I don't even know if these ones still exist.

Are you going to show off the HP by itself, or as part of a longer video themed around the "instant-on media player"-OSes you haven't covered yet?

cathoderaydude

Not sure exactly what I'm going to do with it yet, but yeah I feel like it's not going to be enough for an episode on its own.

miner2945

I bet the same goes for the rest of the "instant media mode"-style devices/OSes. Videace InstantVidget/Expressgate Cloud sounds kinda funky with it's built-in antivirus, sluggish UI, goofy name and sponsorship from some dodgy WiFi vendor, but I imagine you'll get more mileage from mocking the crappy tablet you found it on.

cathoderaydude

I imagine you probably hit enter too early but yeah no it does sound kinda, I agree. I think I'm going to have to do a roundup video with that and a few others that just don't rate standalone coverage because, well, there's a reason that one hasn't shown up yet, it really isn't very interesting, but nonetheless it's part of the story and needs to get documented. Maybe I'll try and figure that out in the near future.

There used to be one in Austin, TX, but it closed down years ago :(
