this is one of those things where maybe i'll be done by friday or maybe it'll be another two weeks who knows, but since i'm finally into the compositing stage of editing i figured i could officially say "this is going to be a video for sure very soon"

if you can't read it, that last timestamp says "03:01:10", and the lie detector determined that was a lie. davinci starts timelines at the 1-hour marker for some industry reason, so this is really "just" two hours long, but a fun fact is that just now, writing this post, is when i discovered this myself. i had thought this was a three hour video for the last two-ish weeks. i now feel 25% less stressed about finishing it

anyway, that's it. oh, but just one more thing

thank christ i had a reason to put this many columbos in a video at last. 2026 going great so far

Columbo.... my beloved gotta rewatch the Gianni Matragrano videos

DiaBomb

Lol I was just checking on your patreon for news. Also, can't wait for Columbo (I love Columbo)

Teknikal_Domain

If I'm not mistaken, that "some industry reason" is just, tradition. Some people I've talked to have said they'd put the tape number in the hours position, but others have said it's just so that if they have it memorized that "01:00:00:00 = start of broadcast" then there's headroom to add test signals or anything else before the 1 hour mark. Of course, you can change this, but that is the default. Oh, and needs more columbo.

DuckReconMajor

love me some davinci resolve (as someone who has edited like 2 videos ever)

Xyon

no but I'll watch the 3h supercut too

DurradonXylles

I can't wait to see what the video is! Also, can't wait to see the Columbos you had saved up! XD

Xaviette Katzenfrau

Yay! Since your last video I've bought a DVD set of Columbo episodes and been going through them so this is fantastic timing 🤣

Mikko Wilson

This is correct. As timecode can't go negative, bars, slate, countdown, black all need somewhere to go on a tape, but then you need the program timecode to make sense. There are many guidelines, but they go something like this: 00;59;00;00 bars & tone 00;59;40;00 slate 00;59;50;00 10-sec countdown 00;59;58;00 black 01;00;00;00 program content start Now in the post-tape world, that standard remains. Things like closed captions which often live in an external file still need accurate timecode to sync up, so the detail still matters. It wasn't that long ago that i was still setting timecode on most every project to start at 00;59;50;00 for laying on a countdown. And yes, sometimes the hour is used to denote something like an episode. On field tapes it was super common for the hour to be the tape number.

It gets even more fun, there are places in the world where program starts at 10:00:00:00. One of my responsibilities at the station I work at is to conform all of the acquisitions from around the globe to what our playout server is expecting (program starts at 00:00:00:00) it’s always fun when you get a program that starts at 1hr but the captions start at 10hr.

Eris Griffon

Hell yeah, my girlfriend loves Columbo.

Thomas Fuchs

People are weird when they say Columbo is a cop, he’s more like a fairy

Grosporina

I read that as saying you were in the composting stage. All the same, looking forward to seeing the end result.

cathoderaydude

listen I'm a millennial, were all in a state of decomposition

PT

Nothing would make me happier in these dark times than 3+ hours of CRD. So I’m mad at Davinci.

Pat Stahl

Columbo always wins

Hehe, my Resolve install also used to also at 1.0, but it now new projects and timelines start at 0.0. There must have been a setting that I changed at some point. Ah yes: Preferences -> User -> Editing -> Start Timecode. You can also set the number if default Audio and Video tracks.

Nene

A while ago I tried changing my settings so that my timeline started at 00:00:00;00. I put it back within a day though, because every time I saw the time code it was like an itch I couldn't scratch. The time code was wrong and I would get yelled at!

Crash Cash

Was just watching an old AT&T training tape. It started with "Projectionist! Please use the focus to ensure the AT&T logos in the center and each corner are sharp and bright! Now make sure the volume is correct! [short music interlude] Now you can turn your projector off and know it's ready for your training session!" That was such a strange way to start a video that it distracted from actually watching the video as my brain kept going "wait, what?! did you see what?! WTH was that?! Really?!"

Cai Tastrophe

Hooray!! Thank you so much for all your hard work 😁

Danny

Man, I was just getting excited for a three hour video and then I kept reading. 😝

Danny

Maybe we'll at least get a one hour followup video.

James

I was so hyped to spend 3 full hours of my day learning about tech I've probably never seen and will certainly never own. Two full hours is a solid consolation prize though!

Chris

If you're going to add Columbos, you're going to need to get a trench coat. Also one of those big pretzels, because I can't condone actual smoking. <3

Bored Bort

It was only like 2 years ago I discovered columbo and I am so happy to hear you are adding them <3

Stefan Szomraky

Oh please let it be the Faye Dunaway episode, or the one with Trish Van Devere!! "Make Me a Perfect Murder" is very CRD coded. With the reason why she is caught, it being Television, etc.

Ecter

Aww yeah! New vid coming!! Wishing you all the good health and best of luck in 2026 <3

Redqueenrunning

I can't believe Ashens beat you to Columbo.

Veronica

All my homies love Columbo.

Mike

"And another thing..."
