Prologue: Saving a Goddess

Waking up in an unknown bed, in an unknown room really does wonders for making you suddenly alert to all your surroundings. Combine that with the fact that you feel like a stranger in your own body does not make for the best impression upon just waking up.

Before I finally lose it and start freaking out, memories that weren’t mine come rushing in as well as the reason for my new body and my current location.

Fortunately for me the body I now called my own possessed a keen mind and I was able to process everything within a few seconds.

“Uugh, so that’s what it feels like to have years’ worth of memories shoved in your head in an instant.” I muttered under my breath as I massaged my head for a bit before finally standing up and taking a look around me while I sorted through my memories.

‘It’s a little strange that I’m not freaking out too much about the situation but then again going by Reinhard’s memories this is not that strange compared to some of the things in his world.’ I thought for a moment before dismissing it as I had more important things to deal with.

“So, I’m really back to being a teenager huh?” I said while walking towards the mirror located in the bathroom and staring at the reflection of the 17-year-old looking back at me.

The person staring back at me was a slender teen of about 184 cm with flaming red hair, sky blue eyes and dressed in a regal looking white and lilac outfit benefitting a knight. Most eye catching however was the beautiful sword sheathed to the side that I knew to be none other than the Dragon Sword Reid, the strongest sword in the world of Re:Zero.

“At least I won’t look too out of place in this world with all the unique features the Danmachi characters have.” I muttered to myself still a little disoriented after finding out I had died and then been given a second chance by the Company.

‘Do I even deserve to be here? To be given such an opportunity? I was nothing special in my first life and all I have going for me now is having a weakened version of Reinhard’s body and powers.’ I thought with a small frown on my face not really feeling like I deserved any of this.

‘Who even am I at this point? Reinhard van Astrea, Stephen Acosta or a combination of the two?’

Right at that moment I felt my pocket vibrate and with I blink I stuck my hand into my pocket pulling out what I instantly recognized as my Company Phone seeing that I had a message.

“Sender: 81&#$@$%*

You have 30 minutes to get your shit together before the mission you took officially starts. You’re welcome.”

Blinking at the message I suddenly recalled that I had accepted a mission titled She Needs a Hero that gave me the opportunity to save someone that had suffered a horrible fate.

“That’s right. Here I am feeling sorry for myself when there is someone out there that could use my help.” I said shaking my head of all negative thoughts and narrowing my eyes in determination.

“First though, I need to find Est.”

Navigating my way around my Pocket Apartment it didn’t take me very long to find the second bedroom where I found a girl with flowing silky white hair sleeping soundly on the bed.

This was none other than Terminus Est, a powerful sword spirit from the world of Blade Dance and now my new companion in this world. This version of Est was not as short as the original but was still pretty short to my 184 cm frame.

Since Reid could only be drawn against opponents it deemed worthy and because I didn’t want to draw too much attention to myself in a world full of Gods and Goddesses with such a sword, I had chosen Est to be my companion and weapon.

It also helped that she was super cute and was just my type.

Gently shaking Est awake it only took a few moments before the petite spirit woke up with a yawn and cutely stretched before looking at me with huge violet eyes, blinking once then hugging me around the waist. “Morning Reinhard.”

Blushing in embarrassment I couldn’t help but stand still and look away from the spirit as she was all but naked underneath the covers except for her light gray knee-high socks.

“Morning Est, how was your rest?” I greeted the spirit with a fake calm as I hugged her closer and patted her head trying to ignore her lack of clothes for now.

“Mmn that feels nice Reinhard.” Est muttered as she all but melted in my hands.

“Hey Est can I ask you something? What’s the last thing you remember?” In order to keep her happy and totally not because I was enjoying it, I continued patting her head.

“I remember all my past if that’s what you’re asking. As for the last thing I remember then that would be being sealed for a really long time. Then one day I sensed a partial bond forming with someone, then I woke up here.” All of this was said with a soft and almost detached voice.

“I see. You must have been lonely then.” She stiffened for a slight moment before continuing to hug me and nodding gently against my chest.

“Hey Est, I know you might feel wary about forming another contract with someone else after what happened to your last one but what if I told you that if you were to form one with me, you wouldn’t have to worry about absorbing too much energy from me or your curses affecting me?” I asked tentatively feeling her freeze in place.

I put all my cards on the table and hoped she would at least listen to me instead of pulling away afraid of hurting me and refusing to form a contract. One of Est’s abilities is the power to remove curses however her way of doing so is by passing on the curses and resentment between Est and her master. Her last contractor had died because the curses got shared between them and the heavy toll on energy that just wielding Est at full power required did not help matters.

However, since I was already plenty strong myself with Reinhard’s ridiculous abilities even if slightly weakened at t6 and with the purchase of Drain Defense in the future, I was confident that I would be able to handle Est at full power. Then there was Reinhard’s Divine Protection of Anti-Magic which would make me immune against magic buffs, debuffs and the curse arts.

Me and Est were actually pretty similar with both of us being too powerful for our own good that we would hurt either our wielder in Est’s case or regular weapons in mine.

“You can really do that Reinhard?” Est finally asked tilting her head up and looking at me with wide eyes. “But how?”

“I can. You see in the near future I should be able to get a handy ability that’ll make it so that no matter how much energy you absorb, I won’t be harmed at all. The same is true for your curses as well. If I’m being honest with you Est, we kind of have a similar problem just in reverse.” I explained patiently causing Est to tilt her head to the side cutely.

“That’s amazing. And what do you mean we have a similar problem?” Est asked.

“Just like you I can’t just use any sword because of my overwhelming energy and the sword I can use is rather picky. I’m also a little nervous if you can handle my energy if I’m being honest.” I revealed nervously as I still had no idea how Est would react to me channeling mana through her.

Blinking in curiosity Est leaned a bit to the side and finally caught sight of Reid at my waist and stared at it silently for a few moments before frowning. “Your sword, it refuses to speak with me.” Est slightly pouted up at me.

“See what I mean? Still, it’s good to hear that you are able to communicate with it even if it won’t respond to you.” I said with a shake of my head at the picky sword.

“Anyways, as much as I want to take my time and explain things properly to you Est, I’m afraid we’re short on time. There is someone that needs my help and I want to see if we’re compatible with each other or we have to wait until I acquire those abilities, I told you about. So, how about it? Do you want to take that risk with me Est?” I asked offering my hand to her.

Est seemed to hesitate for a moment before nodding her head and grabbing my hand with her own and scrunching up her face cutely in concentration.

A moment later Est’s crest appeared on my right hand causing me to smile at the bond I could already feel with the cute spirit. I was pulled from my thoughts as Est suddenly sat up properly and hugged me around the head with her head coming to rest on my chest.

“It worked. Seems we were made for each other Reinhard. With your abundant mana, you should have no problem wielding my full power and in return I should have no problem with yours.” Est muttered happily into my neck making me shiver slightly.

“That’s wonderful to hear. This means that from today onward I’ll be under your care.” I whispered softly to the spirit glad things had turned out alright.

“Mmn I understand. I will stay by Reinhard’s side from now on too.” Est pulled back her head a bit and gave me a cute smile full of happiness.

Did I forget to mention that she was still mostly naked? Because she was!

“Glad to have you. Now I don’t really mind you being mostly naked but you should probably get some clothes on as we’re about to leave.”

“But I don’t have any other clothes Reinhard.” Est muttered with a cute blush on her face. “What should I do? I don’t want anybody else to look at me. Only Reinhard is allowed.”

“There should be some clothes in one of the drawers if this is where you woke up.” I said with a small blush on my cheeks at her words and after getting her to let go of me I opened the nearest drawer finding some skirts and shirts.

“Here this looks to be your size and I bet it would look nice on you. Now you just got to find some panties but I’ll let you look for those, they’re probably on one of the other drawers.” I said using my Divine Protection of Fashion.

Est nodded and got off the bed still mostly naked causing me to turn my head away to give her some privacy. A few minutes later the ruffling of clothes stopped meaning she was probably done much to my relief as I didn’t know how much longer I could remain calm at her former state of dress.

 “Reinhard, how do I look?”

Turning in her direction I saw that she was dressed in the same school outfit she wore in canon. “You look very cute Est.” I complimented her with a smile and a small pat on the head much to her joy.

“Now come on, it’s time to rescue a Goddess.”

“Mmn.”

(Artemis POV)

“AAAH!”

“Artemis-sama! Run!”

“Save yourself!”

‘Everyone…’ Artemis thought in despair watching as one by one all of her children, her Familia, died at the hands of the monster Antares without being able to do anything.

Faced with a tough decision, Artemis was forced to run for her life and leave her children behind knowing that she needed to inform someone of Antares being once again free upon the world.

Using her sword Artemis used it to kill the spawns of Antares that came near her as she made her way to the exit before being forced to stop when she reached the end due to the hundreds of monsters that awaited her.

“It looks like it won’t let me leave.” Artemis muttered to herself in a whisper.

“GRAAAHH.”

Artemis flinched at hearing Antares quickly catching up with her. Unfortunately, she had nowhere to run anymore so she stayed her ground and prepared herself for a final stand.

‘Is this the end?’ Artemis thought in despair closing her eyes waiting for the inevitable.

When she didn’t feel any pain after a moment other than a small breeze, Artemis opened her eyes only to immediately widen them at finding herself in the arms of a boy with flaming red hair and blue eyes. A boy who was impossibly handsome, a small part of her couldn’t help but admit albeit begrudgingly while a small blush grew on her cheeks.

“Are you alright Kami-sama?” The boy asked with a soft but strong voice keeping his eyes focused on the approaching Antares as he held her with his left land while his right held a one-handed longsword raised in defense in front of them.

Looking back at the entrance Artemis saw that all the monsters had already been taken care of by her savior seeing all the magic stones scattered on the ground.

“Yes, now while I appreciate you saving me could you please put me down? I can defend myself just fine.” Artemis asked holding the urge to snap at the boy for holding her so close.

“Of course, please forgive me for being so forward.” The still unknown boy said releasing her and letting her stand on her own before taking a step forward in front of her. “Now please stand back, Kami-sama.”

“No! We must retreat immediately and let others know of what has happened here. Antares is not a monster that can be defeated so easily, my Familia already tried and died fighting him. We must leave!” Artemis denied strongly with a shake of her head not wanting to see someone else die in front of her even if that someone was a boy.

“Trust me Kami-sama, I’m well aware of how dangerous that monster is. All the more reason for me to stop it here before its chaos spreads across the world.” The teen said seriously channeling magic into his sword making it glow a beautiful blue.

The next few minutes Artemis was treated to the sight of the teen easily slaughtering his way to Antares showing a beautiful but deadly display of swordsmanship with none of the monsters even coming close to harming him. All attacks were perfectly parried, no surprise attacks worked against the teen and every attack by his sword never failed to land its mark.

The most amazing thing about it all though was that as the fight progressed, it seemed as if the teen was getting stronger.

In almost no time at all, the monsters standing in the way between him and Antares were killed with only Antares remaining.

The teen then looked down at his sword and seemed to whisper something to it before stabbing it to the ground and reaching for the one still sheathed on his waist.

Artemis blinked having just noticed he was carrying another sword and watched in confusion as the boy took a deep breath before pulling the sword free from its sheath, looking relieved as it did. The sword was just as beautiful as the first but unlike that one, this one gave off a familiar aura.

‘That sword…Is that a Divine weapon?’ Artemis thought in surprise with her eyes remaining fixed on the teen. ‘Who is he? What Familia does he belong to?’

Not done surprising her yet, the teen suddenly took a stance and Artemis watched as the teen began sucking all the magic in the air at an incredible rate with his sword emitting a dazzling white light.

‘What!? How is that possible?’

Then the world was engulfed in white as the teen swung his blade forcing Artemis to close her eyes.

When Artemis opened her eyes moments later, she felt her eyes widened again as she could now see the sky with the teens attack having destroyed everything along its arc.

“D-did he actually do it?” Artemis muttered to herself while in a slight daze as she frantically searched for any sign of Antares and not finding anything.

A moment later she heard almost silent footsteps forcing her to turn in that direction seeing the red-haired teen walking towards her with his swords once again sheathed on his waist. The teen’s clothes and appearance still looked immaculate as if he hadn’t gone into battle at all.

The teen finally came to a stop in front of her and offered her a small smile.

“Are you alright, Kami-sama? I apologize for not warning you of my attack.” The teen apologized with a bow of his head and his hand on his chest giving him the picture of a knight.

“I-I’m fine, thank you.” Artemis found herself responding automatically, her gaze still focused on the teens face a name springing to her mind.

“Haah thank goo-”

The teens eyes suddenly rolled to the back of his head and he fell forward clearly unconscious causing Artemis to panic and doing her best to catch him as a name slipped past her lips.

“Orion!”

This is my rewrite of one of the first stories I wrote but had to drop due to irl stuff. Hopefully you enjoy. MC will be a 'good' character with only those evil or very close friends being 'Stamped'.

Should it be called prologue instead of epilogue?
