Chapter 21: A Promise Renewed

Jumping away from our clash, I carelessly threw my sword behind me. It was useless trying to go up against the world’s greatest swordsman in his specialty.

Extending my arms behind me, my fists enlarged to huge proportions as I activated Gear 3, already infused with Armament Haki.

“Gum Gum… Elephant Gatling!” I exclaimed before hammering the swordsman with a barrage of giant fists infused with my Haki.

I didn’t pay attention to anything else around me. All of my focus was on Mihawk and trying to punch his teeth in as the man was forced to defend himself as best he could while on the small platform.

“…ffy.”

“…uffy!”

Blinking at hearing something, I turned my head before finally making out my name being shouted by what sounded like Usopp.

“Luffy!” Usopp yelled desperately while down on the ground on the deck of the Baratie, which was rocking like crazy and on the verge of capsizing. “Calm down or you’ll drown all of us!”

Immediately pulling my fists back and returning them to normal, I eyed the Baratie while keeping an eye on Mihawk. Other than being soaking wet, he didn’t appear to be injured, which irritated me to no end internally.

Leaving that aside for now, I inspected the Baratie and watched as the waves slowly settled while the cooks on top of it all let out sighs of relief.

My gaze turned to Tiche next, who was standing next to Usopp. She had actually managed to remain standing despite everything and was holding Muramasa in her hand, probably having picked it up when I dropped it.

“I’m glad to see you seemed to settle down.” Mihawk suddenly said, causing all my attention to return to him as he continued.

“Are you that young swordsman’s comrade?”

“That’s right.” I said with a tight tone as I internally extended my Observation before finally letting my shoulders relax as I felt Zoro’s presence. “He’s my nakama.”

“I see now how he was able to learn Haki despite being in the East Blue if he had someone like you as a Captain.” Mihawk muttered as he sheathed his sword.

“As you can probably already tell, I didn’t kill your friend.”

Right as he said those words, there was a splashing sound and the noise of someone coughing. I turned slightly and saw that Johnny and Yosaku had dived in and pulled Zoro out of the sea. He was currently bleeding heavily.

“Big Bro! Big Bro! Say something!” Johnny’s panicked voice yelled out for everyone to hear.

Usopp quickly got back to his feet and helped them get Zoro onto the Baratie while they fussed over him as he regained consciousness.

“It’s still too early for you to die. My name is Dracule Mihawk! Learn about yourself! Learn about the world! And become strong!” Mihawk declared in a dramatic tone as he turned toward Zoro, who was slowly coming to, and gave him a motivating speech.

‘Hell, even I’m slightly motivated and swordsmanship is not really my thing.’

“No matter how many years it takes, I will hold this seat of the strongest and wait for you. Surpass this sword! Try to surpass me! Roronoa Zoro!”

Apparently finished with his grand motivational speech, Mihawk turned back to me. “Kid, what is your goal?”

“The One Piece.” I immediately declared without hesitation.

Mihawk smirked at my response as if already expecting it. “It’ll be even harder than surpassing me!”

“Doesn’t matter,” I declared with a shake of my head and a firm look. “It’s what I decided on.”

“Hmph.” All I got was an amused huff in return as his gaze traveled to my hat for less than a second.

Our talk abruptly came to an end as Zoro, now fully aware, raised Wado Ichimonji into the air.

“L… Luffy… hah, hah… Can you hear me?” Zoro asked in a raspy and exhausted tone.

“Loud and clear!” I immediately shot back with a relaxed grin.

“Did I worry you? You need no less than the world’s greatest swordsman, right?” Zoro continued before stopping as he coughed up a wad of blood, worrying the others with him.

I could do nothing but patiently listen, making sure to engrave the scene into memory as Zoro made his iconic vow.

“I… I will not be defeated ever again!” Zoro yelled with all of his strength, his voice sounding a bit choked up as tears of frustration ran down his face.

“Until the day I defeat him and become a master swordsman… I’ll never… be defeated! Got any problems with that… King of the Pirates!?” Zoro shouted out for the world to hear.

My grin stretching from side to side, a happy laugh escaped my lips. “Shishishi, none at all~”

“You’re a good team. I want to see you guys again.” Hawkeye said in passing as he walked away and headed toward his ship.

“I’m sure we will.” I said calmly, my annoyance and anger at the man from earlier completely gone.

Then, proving that he had no self-preservation skills whatsoever, Krieg chose that moment to show his ugly mug.

“Hey, Hawk-Eye!” Krieg arrogantly called out with crossed arms. “Didn’t you come to take my life… the life of the East Blue’s ruler, Don Krieg?”

“I was going to, but I had enough fun.” Mihawk replied calmly without looking back. “So I’m going home to get some rest.”

Grinning arrogantly, Krieg popped his neck. “You may have had enough, but I’m tired of getting beaten.” He stated before his armor opened up the next moment and he fired the hidden weapons he had there.

“As expected… he never learns a lesson…” Mihawk replied in boredom as he grabbed his sword and brought it down, breaking the part of the broken ship we were standing on and creating a huge wave.

I was forced to use Geppo to get back to the others at the Baratie and landed next to Tiche, who silently passed me my blade as I gave her a thankful nod.

Turning to Zoro, Usopp, Johnny, and Yosaku, I addressed them with a serious expression. “I’m about to cause a lot of waves in a moment. Make sure Zoro doesn’t move around too much. I’ll heal him once I’m done.”

Blinking in surprise at my words, they nonetheless did as asked and grabbed onto Zoro while holding onto whatever they could with their free hands.

Then I turned to the cooks, who were either looking at us or where the Krieg Pirates were.

“Hey, old man,” I called out, catching Zeff’s attention. “You better tell your guys to hang on to something. I’m not in the mood to listen to that dumbass anymore, so I’m ending this.” I explained calmly, causing his eyes to widen before he turned to his employees and Sanji.

“Everyone, hang onto something!”

Once the waves settled down again and Mihawk could be seen sailing away, I stepped forward as I brandished my sword again and applied Armament to it.

Seeing the Krieg Pirates and, more importantly, Krieg standing on the remains of their galleon, I narrowed my eyes before swinging down Muramasa with all my strength.

“Taiyonami!” I declared calmly as a huge red, almost yellow, vertical slash flew off my sword and headed toward the piece of trash in the distance.

The poor bastard didn’t see it coming until the last second when his crew yelled at him before he was engulfed in my attack, causing a huge explosion as the Baratie started swaying up and down again aggressively.

Sheathing my blade, I turned around back to everyone who were looking forward with ridiculous expressions on their faces — wide eyes, opened mouths, and snot running down their noses — with the exception of Tiche and an unconscious Zoro. I walked toward the latter.

Paying them no attention whatsoever, I kneeled down next to my first mate.

“Alright, now let’s patch him up.” I muttered as I brought my hand forward and let Healing Light work its magic.

Behind me, in the direction of where I had unleashed my attack and where the Krieg Pirates were, the sea had been parted for a good distance before water quickly rushed in and caused more waves to form.

The Krieg Pirates were nowhere to be seen now except for some floating debris of their galleon.

I paid no mind to the surprised voices coming from the cooks as they regained their wits.

“D-Did that kid just part the ocean or am I going crazy?”

“Y-Yeah, I saw it too.”

“Forget that! That kid actually forced Hawk-Eyes onto the defensive! And were my eyes playing tricks on me or were his fists huge!?”

“A Devil Fruit! That kid must have eaten a Devil Fruit.”

Even Usopp, who was sitting a few feet away from me, was muttering to himself as he shot me a wide-eyed look.

Almost finished with my healing, as Zoro’s wounds closed up and now only left slight gashes, I was forced to pause as Zoro’s hand came down on my wrist.

“T-Thanks for healing me, but you can stop now, Luffy.” Zoro declared seriously as he slowly sat up, letting go of my hand as I let Healing Light dissipate.

“W-What are you talking about, Big Bro!? Let Big Bro Luffy finish healing you!” Yosaku exclaimed as he tried to force Zoro back down, but had his hand pushed away.

“I said it’s fine!” Zoro declared firmly, finally stopping them and causing him and Johnny to settle down as he brought his hand to his wound. “I would like to keep this wound as a reminder of today.”

Silently checking his wound and seeing that he was only slightly bleeding, meaning he was no longer in danger, I let out a sigh, somewhat expecting this, and nodded my head.

“Fine, if that’s what you want.” I shrugged calmly as I finally relaxed, and Zoro shot me a thankful nod.

“Aaah! I’m glad that the craziness is finally over!” Usopp suddenly exclaimed while letting out a loud groan and flopping onto his back on the deck of the Baratie.

“Speaking of, where is Nami?” I asked curiously as I looked around, since I had tasked her with moving the Merry a good distance away so it wouldn’t be damaged.

“Big Sis Nami told us she could handle taking care of the ship so we left her over there!” Yosaku said as he pointed in a certain direction.

I will admit that for a moment, the worry that Nami had pulled the same thing as in canon and left by herself to confront Arlong crossed my mind.

That feeling was immediately erased though as, sure enough, the figure of the Merry was steadily making its way back to the Baratie now that the danger was over.

Smiling in relief, I decided to flop onto my back as well as I finally looked at the notifications I had pending.

[Feat Achieved! Defeated Krieg Pirates singlehandedly and left everyone in awe or wary of your strength]

+1 Gold Random Ticket

[Feat Achieved! Greatly impressed Mihawk, forcing him to take you a little seriously.]

+1 Silver Random Ticket

‘Only a silver for the latter, huh?’ I thought in slight disappointment and frustration, realizing the double meaning of it. That I still had a long way to go until I could match such a monster.

‘Oh well, let’s roll as we wait for Nami.’ I thought, letting out a breath and relaxing again.

[Rolling…]

[Cornucopia]

|Rare Item|

A horn that contains an unlimited amount of delicious and fresh mundane vegetables, fruits, and similar ingredients that can be taken out at any time. The user has to think of the ingredient they want before pulling it out.

[Sunshine Charm]

|Uncommon Trait|

You exude a vibe of goodness and purity. Good-aligned beings like you more. It is easier to convince others that you are doing good.

‘Haah, at this point I’m just going to embrace any sun-related rolls.’ I thought silently with a bit of a roll of my eyes before looking at the first roll again.

‘At least now we don’t have to worry about ever going hungry again.’ I let a smile grace my face. ‘Now if only I could get a similar ability but with meat instead.’

It didn’t take long for Nami to finally reach us before dropping anchor and quickly getting off the Merry, asking for details on what had happened.

“What the hell happened!? I leave you guys for a few minutes and Zoro is all bloodied up and the ocean is split down the middle?” Nami demanded with an angry and worried tone as she crossed her arms.

Looking for a chance to boast, Usopp immediately perked up and opened his mouth.

“It was of course the work of I! Capta—Wham!”

Usopp never got to finish as Nami decked him in the head with a solid punch, immediately dropping him to the ground and grabbing his head with teary eyes.

“How many times do I have to say it before it sticks in, damn it!? There’s only one Captain in this crew and it’s definitely not you, Usopp! Now would you please explain already, Luffy? I don’t doubt that whatever comes out of his mouth will be lies.” Nami exclaimed with a huff.

‘Yeah, definitely need to have that talk with Usopp soon.’ I thought silently as I watched the teen quietly call Nami a mean and abusive witch, only to flinch as Nami gave him a side-eyed glare.

“Sure, but wait a moment. Seems they have something they want to say to us.” I said with a smile and nod as I pointed behind her with my head.

Turning around, we watched Zeff and Sanji approach us calmly and stop in front of us.

“Thanks for the assist, kid.” Zeff grunted with crossed arms as Sanji did his best to remain calm while shooting Nami and Tiche lovestruck looks. “You guys hungry?”

At the mention of food, my stomach growled loudly, causing a few chuckles as I nodded with a big grin. “You bet, we’re starved.”

“Heh, good. You and your crew are welcome to eat whatever you want. Food should be ready soon.” Zeff said with a small smirk before he turned around and went back inside while yelling at the other cooks to get working, leaving Sanji behind.

Making sure that Zeff was really gone, Sanji dropped his lovestruck look and nodded his head thankfully at me.

“Thanks for protecting the restaurant, even if you almost destroyed it during your clash. As I said, this place means the world to the old geezer.” Sanji thanked me honestly.

“If you want to thank me,” I immediately exclaimed while pointing at him with a big smile, causing him to groan, “then join my crew, Sanji!”

“Tsk, haven’t given up, huh?” Sanji clicked his tongue in annoyance, but unlike other times, this time he didn’t immediately reject the offer as he turned away again.

‘Yep, only a bit more now~’

“Like the geezer said, food will be ready soon.” Sanji said before his attitude turned back to a lovestruck one as he turned his head with hearts in his eyes and addressed Nami and Tiche.

“I promise I’ll cook the most delicious meals you’ve ever tasted, Nami-swan Tiche-chwan”

Nami just rolled her eyes a bit but didn’t seem mad at the chance at free food while Tiche like always, completely ignored him.

“Tsk, hey Ero-Cook. Make sure there’s plenty of sake too.” Zoro grunted rudely, immediately causing Sanji to drop his act and throw a glare at the swordsman.

“What did you say, Marimo!?”

They began arguing as I let out an amused laugh before I pulled Nami and Tiche to my side and led us inside, leaving the two arguing outside as Usopp, Johnny, and Yosaku joined us.

“Shishishi, those two are a riot.”

I then turned to a slightly flushing Nami, who I was still holding by her shoulder, and smiled.

“Anyways Nami, it went down like this…”
