Comic #959: Midnight (Patreon)

For those who haven't seen it, this comic is a parody of the Midnight cinematic.

I’ve made a habit of making comics that parody cinematics, like #881. I always find them really enjoyable to make, so when I saw there was a trailer for the next expansion I was really hopeful that something would come to me.

As soon as a hand appeared on Liadrin’s shoulder, I said to myself, ‘That’s Donald”. I just love the idea that the narrative throughout the lore of these stories relies on champions that are sometimes played by incompetent doofuses. The whole fate of the world rests on people like Donald.

I was originally going to have a different first panel. At first it was going to be a view of Lor'themar kneeling with Liadrin's words playing over it, like in the cinematic. But when I was finishing drawing Donald and Liadrin in the final panel I realized that I was going to have to zoom in on them to get the framing right. I had already drawn Liadrin's entire body kneeling from toe to head, and I was so annoyed that all that work wasn't going to be seen by anyone, that I said, fuck it, and put her in the first panel in front of the sunwell. In the end I think it worked out better that way.

The final panel is also a slight callback to my comic's first F-bomb in #128.
