Hey all,

So I feel like it's been awhile and It's been kind of a struggle this time around. In the spirit of self-disclosure, I'll try to bring y'all up to speed on things. If you have other questions, don't hesitate to ask. I've always tried to be transparent, so hit me up in the comments.

Personal Details

It's been a rough month with personal obstacles related to the writing. I made a newbie mistake and started playing Camp Buddy and it screwed up my writing style something fierce. My outline has been complete for awhile but by far my biggest obstacle was to follow v0.12. I was really proud of how that update turned out and how the writing went. It worked for me and I felt like I captured my vision pretty well. However, what I didn't anticipate is that (in my opinion) most updates have surpassed their predecessor. Somehow, I feel like I've always managed to improve the story; to up the ante with each update. The problem this time around is that v0.13 is a new direction to some degree and I've really struggled--grieved even--with a lack of ability to surpass the previous update. Now logically, those closest to me have stated that not every chapter of a book will be better than the last. Not every scene of a movie will surpass the previous scene. Logically, I understand this. As an amateur, though... yeah, I never anticipated that and shit knocked the wind out of me.

So I've struggled.

However, the writing continues and I feel better about it now. I feel like I have some direction again and I'm kinda feeling that light at the end of the tunnel again.  Definitely steering clear of other games for now, though.

Silence

Although my silence is probably on par with alot of the other game creators, I feel like it's been unusual for me because I really try to keep you guys in the loop. But there's a lot of soul-searching in this game for me so sometimes I have to step back.  For those that haven't noticed, we've lost quite a few people this month. I'm unsure if this is due to the silence or if people were just expecting something in November for sure and became frustrated. That exodus beat me up a bit, too, especially after how stoked I was at v0.12. It seemed to hit right when I was the most frustrated with my work and sorta derailed me further.

However, I've been reminded that the game was originally a project I never expected to grow to this height.  That I never really expected an audience of this magnitude. So things move forward, as they always have. Because, unlike a lot of these games...I want this one to be completed.

Status

So that being said, I've been working on the update and the good news is that it's coming along again and I feel a little better about it. Current code is around 1,400 lines so I expect it around the 2,000 depending on what other random shit I come up with at the last minute. So despite the wait, the time it's taken should even out with the length of the update and be pretty consistent with the previous ones. Currently, I have around 65 CGs completed and coded into the game with more planned. I'm pretty much caught up to the writing and CGs together right now and I'm probably around the 70% mark...maybe further. While I wanted an animation in this update, I doubt I'm going to get it in. That being said, an alternative would be to add the animation in during the next update during the recap before v0.14 starts. I'm still playing with ideas but odds are there will be no animation. I simply can't outdo v0.12 with this one. It's just taken me a long time to accept that the story has to have ups and downs. This is a stage-setting update.

Blog

I'll also put out more information on the Tumblr blog before long. So in the middle of all this, Tumblr decided they're not going to allow adult content anymore. I've enjoyed Tumblr and I like the format. It's mobile and I can chat with followers easily--something that's really important to me. I'm going to stay on the Tumblr for now because I have other priorities but I may have to look for alternatives so I can publish more game content on there and not worry about the Tumblr police.

The Plan

1. I'm going to stop being a little bitch

2. Writing the final elements of the update. I don't expect a ton of CGs for these scenes right now but we'll see where the characters take me. This could be one long scene or could split it into a couple days. I haven't decided yet. I should get a couple of nights this week to work on CGs and stuff, too, so that should help

Hit me up with any questions, concerns, or things that you feel I left out.

Ted

You're so much more reliable and transparent than virtually all of the game projects on this site. A little contraction around the holidays while people worry about holiday spending and try to slim down what they're paying for is perfectly natural. Transitional updates are perfectly reasonable. You're kicking ass and we believe in you. RE the Camp Buddy thing -- people doubted for years that that game would even come out. No one can say the same thing about you. You put out big chunks of game all the time for us, so don't beat yourself up too much!

Ok so I’m going to be all mushy and give you some complements. I’ve been watching the counter too, and saw the dip. I had the same thought as Ted; eh… it’s the holiday season. That being said, you work merits more attention than it seems to be getting. Sorry social media and promoting aren’t in my wheelhouse, I’m pretty low key. Speaking for myself I really don’t have any expectations you’re not going to meet. I’m already sold, and just along for the ride. Your characters are three dimensional (no pun intended) and very relatable. Like really close to home relatable. I catch myself thinking about Zack and Braden at random times, which is new for me. The characters are a nice change of pace from he’s the nerdy one, and he’s the shy one, and he’s the mysterious one. Going off of the past, I would guess you’ll get you second wind soon as you start to get excited about this new adventure. Oh, and don’t forget you are improving the product, the v0.13 teaser looks great.

It's alright. Not everything has to be a masterpiece. The thing with ongoing efforts is, things always CAN change. Finished products are what's static. While you may see something wrong with that, seen in a different light, that's actually worthy of celebration. It only means that you're improving and evolving. Consistency might be important, but too much of it is stagnation. However, too much of it also means that you can't settle to one style. It's really up to you to find a pace and balance you're comfortable with. Honestly, I'm just glad to see you still willing to work on this project. I have been too much invested emotionally to see it just fizzle out. Funnily enough, i only played the game twice (and the second through the chapter selection menu, just because i was curious how the pervy route differs from the romantic one). But I really want to see how Braden and Zack's story ends. That said, I also believe that moderation is key. Take some breaks if you need it. The last thing we want is your interest in the project waning, spelling its death. Above all else, remember that your community is here to support you through it all. If you need help just ring the bell and we'll see what we can do. ;) Best of luck on the game! Btw Re: changes in direction, I think you perfectly set that up with the previous update. New beginnings don't always have to be great and perfect. In this case, the new chapters in Braden and Zack's life don't have to be perfect; and the same goes for your writing and work. For your first game, this is already a thousand times better than most games out there. Even coming out on top (the only game that comes close to your game, and that's paid, and made by multiple people) seems banal and empty when compared to Str8vn. :) So don't be so down about whatever it is your down about. It seems to me that you're just being overcritical on yourself. Anyway I think my thoughts are circling here because I just woke up XD but I got up immediately as soon as I saw the update from patreon. But I want to at least inspire you before I go back to sleep. You've been great and I'm happy that you're the first patreon I ever supported. I'm usually a buy once kind of guy which is why I actively avoid subscription apps on the app store but there's a certain pull to the way you do things that make me want to support the game until its completion. And I don't even know you personally. So that goes to say a LOT don't you think? Anyway, again, good luck and don't beat yourself too much. Now write that story and push the update. Zack and Braden awaits! :)

I hope we will finally see them fuck together and be a couple :P and have twists history to see elsewhere :D

Patreon appears to be deleting comments again. lex0 posted: Hey ! Honestly, I can understand why people leave. I don't say it's something good, I certainly don't think you deserve it, but in a commercial way of thinking, it's logical : I pay to get something ; if I don't get anything, I don't pay. Even if you obviously don't create your game in this way, I think you inevitably expose yourself at this kind of reasoning (and at critics) by selling content through Patreon. It's something I think you have to accept, and ignore to move on :) I must confess I hesitate sometimes about cancelling my membership (it will maybe happen some day ?) but every time I change my mind, to be supportive of your work. Your creativity deserves it, the game is good and gave me some really nice times, so I keep going for now. Plus, it made me want to create my own visual novel ; I started it and I discovered how difficult it is and how incredibly much time you have to spend to set thousands of details... I think I'll be happy if I finish it in the next sixteen years. So, it would be really dishonest to blame you for taking your time :) About the quality of the updates, I don't think that v0.13 is better than v0.12, which is better than v0.11... Or worse. Every part is different than the others in so many ways (how to play, the feelings, the effervescence...) that it's not relevant to make comparisons. So let down the pressure about the next one, will you ? And see the only important thing about the evolution of the story : you improve your skills working on it, this is the progress that matters. Of course, there was an emotionnal peak (can we say that in English ?) in the last update, and you won't do better in the next one. But that's ok ! Think about TV shows, for example, when the season finale is greaaaat, what happens next ? A new season starts, and if the show is good, the story goes in another direction, the tension collapses but raises episode after episode to give new emotions. I think it's what you'll do in the next updates, so keep confident :) (Hope I haven't been misundertandable by making too many mistakes in my comment...)

Hey Rene, Thanks for the thoughts. You're correct in this being an alpha. I think, at times, the episodic release suggests finality but this is far from the truth. I anticipate by the end of this game, I'll hopefully have learned a lot to improve the game in its second draft. I have ideas and I have people close to me with even better ones. I'm optimistic for this little amateur attempt in the long run. In the references to Camp Buddy, we are very different. CbB also had an entire team, something I've avoided for a long time because I wanted to make it my own project and just enjoyed the time with it. However, as the following grows and I learn more, I find a bigger thirst to improve it in more complex ways. Its a paradox. But...I can say I will finish it. Regardless of how long it takes, I'm dedicated to the project. Thanks for the thoughts, Rene
