This is just a super cool song. The title is cool. The melody is cool. Singing it makes me feel cool... Which is quite a feat because I am about the most UN-cool person you'd ever want to meet. But maybe, just maybe, publicly releasing this song might give me a little boost in my coolness, and perhaps if I keep working on it really hard, one day, I might actually BE cool.

Probably not though.

That doesn't change the fact that "House of the Rising Sun" is just a darn cool tune. It took me a hot minute to figure out what to do with it though because I really didn't want to spend the whole song above middle C screaming my face off (no one wants to hear that). But after a bit of tinkering I got it figured out, and the video you're about to watch is where it ended up. Or should I say "ended down"?

We shot this in the middle of the night in a not so wonderful part of Orlando in a studio that had no air conditioning oh-and-by-the-way it was about 90 degrees F outside.  Kathy was convinced we were gonna get butchered up by a roving cannibal gang and fed to the zomb-pigs. Also, I almost burned my hand on that friggin' lighter and I had a hangnail that hurt real bad.  See how we suffer for you!?

Anyway, we made it out alive, and now we've made this.

It's no longer just mine, it's now yours, too and I hope you love it.

Thank you for everything and I'll see you soon.

OHHH YEAHHHHH

Cynthia Ross

Wait what?! Lolz, those clues were no help at all!!! And YES to you doing this song! Now I gotta go listen. Also: you’re cool. Not quite as cool as Eli perhaps, but you are certainly above average. 😊

Alex King

Note: do not read the accompanying text to Geoff's posts with a cast on his arm. I tried to hit my forehead and almost went into a coma.

Nathan Ritchie

As always, exceptional job! Can’t wait for the release on Spotify 🔥

Liz Munro

I wasn’t sure I did actually know the song, I know the I think 70’s or 80’s rock ballad version and I didn’t like that song cos it was so slow and boring, but THIS Geoff is absolutely FUN and fantastic and makes this song 100% better than the version I know. WELL DONE GEOFF & KATHY

Sophia Sutherland

YEEEESSSS!!! This is 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 Amazing job!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Melissa Glyn-Jones

Yes!! Love this song and absolutely love your spin on it!!! This is definitely my new favourite from your solo work (changes every time you release to be honest ☺️) Amazing work guys ❤️

Hunter

Phew!!!! That was as hot as that lighter in your hand! Wow! I’m currently on my back doing the awkward turtle because that shocked me so much! WELL WELL DONE!

Katie D

I was SO hoping it was going to be House of the Rising Sun!! I absolutely LOVE what you did with this. It's probably the most unique version of this song I've heard, and I've heard many versions. Gonna have to listen to this many, many more times 💗

Megan Murdock

Ok I hadn't heard Rockapella's version. But towards the end you did something that sounded like something Scott Leonard would do. Went and watched their version in 95 in Japan immediately after and I was right!

Caroline

I love this song, and I love your version of it! 🖤

Justin Bush

Oh Geoff that was absolutely beautiful ~

Amber Scott

Wow, this was so different, I love it!

Sarah Dworak

So Uncool! I really love the added sound effects. What a fabulous spin on things. Well played!

Cynthia Ross

YAAAAZ!!!! I’ve so wanted to hear you go for some gritty blues and this counts, IMO. Right here man…this is what I’m here for. This is what I was waiting for and I didn’t have a clue it’d be this song. Musta took a hot room for you to serve up some hot blues. Love to you both! Can’t wait for this to go public!

Ellie Cullen

i love it, great job. i am in my 30's and i grew up with my family singing the version from The Animals, its a great song, and you have done it beautifully.

Tara Congo

Geoff, this is one of the coolest things I've ever seen/heard. Seriously. Not just by you, but like - top 10 list of coolest things ever. I have always loved this song, but this is my new favourite version by a long shot. How are you this creative???

Amy Kutnerian

Absolutely incredible to listen to, and I love the rhythm and guitar! Glad you guys survived the shoot 😄. Fun fact, once I told my roommate you posted this it was DEMANDED that I put it on the TV immediately. I'm already plotting how to secretly record my mom listening to it - she ADORES this song.

Dylan Reubenking

This song has been one of my favorites for a while. Rag'n'Bone Man and Five Finger Death Punch have fantastic and wildly different versions, but this one is now my favorite. You never fail to top yourself! This is phenomenal!

Rachael Heidi

Omg Geoff, this is one of my favourite songs ❤️❤️ and now it IS my favourite 😍. I love this!! And thank you for your suffering. We appreciate it lol 💕.

Jen A AKA Dravengal

Geoff! YOU ARE SO COOL!!! Stop knocking yourself! Now, as to the video...loved it. It was insane, creepy (that breath!), but also upbeat and fun. It sucks you in! Then I jumped a mile when the trunk slammed shut! Dylan Reubenking is right, this is phenomenal. Truly.

Maggie S

Oh!, I love the spin you put on this, Geoff! I knew it originally as a folk ballad--deep and slow, almost melancholy; then the Animals version. I always think of it as a bass/baritone-lead song. So glad you created your own version. Well done, you! And Kathy!

WisconSims

Alright.... when I saw House of the Rising Sun I was a little disappointed. I was hoping for Flowers on the Wall. But I have to say, everything about this video was pinnacle. I'm going to lay on my subwoofer and listen to it on loop. I mean come on! This slaps! And your leather bracelet is pretty fly. Much love, my guy

Joey Sydnes

Very cool! I’ve never heard any other version so can’t compare but as always the ranges covered by one person blows my mind. I don’t sing whatsoever but can totally appreciate what it must take just to figure out what each “Geoff” is going to sing as their part to bring it all together. Very creative and well done as always including the video!

Debs Badger

Geoff, you hit this one out of the park. I *definitely* hear a little Rockapella influence, but its kind of unique and very much *you*. I had already said I loved the vibe in the still shot, and that carries over into the video. SO.MANY.INTERESTING.LITTLE.THINGS.IN.HERE. I *do* hope you give us some breakdown of those. I really liked some of the subtle bits, like the trunk closing at the apropos time, and the lighting of the candle in the background. Very cool.

Gretchen G

This is fabulous! Starts out strong and just keeps getting better and better as the song goes on. I can't wait to share this with everyone! That sound at 4:33 scared the heck out of me though! And I've listened two more times and it's still making me jump even though I'm expecting it. 😅 I dunno why! Anyway, I'm glad you and Kathy didn't get eaten by cannibals. 😄

Rita (idolanocircus)

At a loss for words at your creativity and hard work always! 💗 This is such a fun version and I'll be listening to it many times so i can catch all the details because it's what this deserves. You should most definitely be proud of it! Thank you for somehow always making better and better content 💕

Miranda Rakers

I know I'm not the only one who instinctively listens to a new Geoff song at about an 11 out of 10 volume, as I did with this one. However on second listen I turned the Geoffness down to about a 7 and was surprised by how much more I was able to get out of it. Possibly the only time I would suggest turning your Geoff down to get more. Thanks for a super version of this song!! Everyone is gonna love it!

Angie Woollard

I just don’t know how you do it, Geoff. You keep taking these songs with, frankly, not much meat on their bones and turning them into something sooo tasty. A gourmet feast for the ears. My mind is continually blown as to how you can re-imagine a song into something completely your own. You are absolutely unbelievable and I’m so happy I found you and your music. 💗 PS: You have no idea how much that synchronized trunk lid closing pleased me. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Angie Woollard

Oh, and also, I think this song cements the fact that you need to do more blues stuff. Because wow. 🤯

Megan Murdock

I didnt become overly familiar with Rockapella until 2009. I mean I definitely remember Where in the World is Carmen San Diego but I didnt really start actively listening until 2009ish when a friend joined the group. But I recognize some traits Geoff threw in there.

Tracie Schlaak

Holy bass Batman! Geoff this was fantastic! Great arrangement. EVERYONE IS GOING TO LOVE IT!!!

Helen A

Oh wow! I really wasn't sure what to expect from this. The only versions I've heard are by The Animals and Joni Mitchell, which couldn't be more different from one another, so this kind of laid back, bluesy, intricately layered arrangement came as a really pleasant surprise. The song is about the regrets of a wasted life and of behaviors the singer wants to change but keeps repeating and winding up right back where they started. (Or at least that's my interpretation!) So visually, the way the backing Geoffs came in after the first verse and then suddenly disappeared like phantoms of main-singer's past really works!

Beth Comer

The arrangement of this piece is amazing. I can't imagine how hard it is to take a song as iconic and well known as this one, and adapt it not only to a much lower register, but to also play with the melody slightly and put your own stamp on it. And it works *so well*!! You have such an extraordinary talent, and I am so thankful that you have chosen to share it with all of us.

Alex Walker

You got me to love this song! COOL!! 🔥💖

Brad Tobin

Phenomenal as always...Salute...listening to you sing is one of life's pleasures, thank you for all you do. and for the last two hours I now have this song running through my head haha

Tina Harshbarger

You could sing the phone book and I’d love it!

Nana Koranteng

Some of those low notes made me teary eyed no joke those sub harmonics catch me off guard all the time!

Teresa Ritter

Smack-- right outta the ballpark once again!! This is my husband's favorite song (the animals version) and even he said awesome!!! Love love love!! Cant wait to download and add to my playlist.

Jacob Mustian

I only have one 4 letter word to say to this.........BRUH

Alisha Watson

Glad you and Kathy survived and made it out relatively unscathed. That sounds like quite the adventure. The history of the song is really interesting. I think one of the only versions I've heard was by The Animals. I've listened to this a few times already and still can't think of exactly what to say other than it is an excellent arrangement and I couldn't wipe the grin off my face throughout the whole song. Well done, sir.

Ruth Nellis

Just wow!!! I'm used to the 60's version. This was way different but I really really loved it! Awesome job!

Marlo Schalesky

Oh my gosh, that's awesome!! Just gonna keep clicking play on this one!

Åse M Bruun Lagnestål

Nice work! This was an amazing twist of a song I've heard a zillion times in a xillion versions. And this was absolutely without a doubt the best version I've heard. Thank you!

Penny Cummings

Best version I've heard of this song ever! ♥

Eileen Parkman

Love how you sort of flipped it on its head. A great version, to be sure. <3

Arlene Jacobs

Thank you for suffering for your art. We appreciate you!! You did amazing!!! Haven’t heard the song in a long time. Kudos!

Derek Sandlin

That was AWESOME!!!! Enough said

PJ

Geoff you're not cool... you're HOT

Cynthia Ross

There’s a great vid called “The House of the Rising Sun trough History” on you tube. (Yes, they spelled through as trough). Check it out. The versions I know best - and I think have been recorded the most - are this one about a gambler and a female version about a “working girl”. Dolly Parton recorded the second one. I think Geoff’s bluesy take is closer to the older versions - and I love it beyond my ability to express. 😁

Cynthia Ross

This premiered about two hours ago now. So….who else has spent the last two hours listening over and over? Come on. I know it’s not just me!

Helen A

Very cool! I've never liked the song very much based on the two versions I'd heard so I never looked for any more. I just know that I like this version a LOT. 😊

Benjamin Maslow (BEM684)

Awesome job! Just wondering... speaking of Rockapella.... I know Voiceplay has done a ton of collaborations in the past. Have you ever tried reaching out to Scott Leonard or Barry Carl to do a song/video with yourself or Voiceplay?

Tine

Oohhhh love what you did with this. Would also love to hear more about your arrangement, definitely. Very unique spin on it and very cool, or un cool, however you'd like to hear.. it's damn brilliant for sure.😂 Thanks to both Kathy and yourself for sacrificing some sleep and pulling through. Convinced even more to wanting to hear you do some classic blues songs.. but in the meantime thank you for sharing this with us. Phenomenal, can't wait to see it pop up everywhere!

Liz Munro

The FIRST time I watched it, I wasn’t really paying attention as it dropped just before I had a VERY important Patreon Zoom meeting so I missed a lot of the smaller details like the trunk slamming shut(I jumped and spilled my coffee all over my shirt lol), very Elvis Presley vibes, I really appreciate the little details and extra effort you put in

Christine

This is beautiful Geoff! You have so much soul in your voice that this song, "screamy" as it tends to be, is a great fit for you. I think you particularly nailed the color and feel of the song. I love the choices you made with sounds, harmonies, and subharmonics. Yours is my favorite performance of this song. Wonderful job, we appreciate your suffering for your art and for us. 💖

Tara Congo

I love how the effects really give the scene a haunted vibe. Suits the theme of the song perfectly.

LadyGory

C’mon now Geoff you’re not fooling anybody, you can’t put out a song that sounds THIS f’ing good and NOT be cool 😜 really though, I’ve heard dozens of versions of this song and your version just hits different. Gorgeous sound

Amanda Hovendon

Wow! This is INSANE! Everyone is going to LOVE this! I am going to share on every social media account I am on❤️❤️❤️❤️ P.S I’m so glad I joined Patreon. Cause this is so friggin cool❤️❤️❤️

Lioba

Many thanks to you and Kathy and everyone else who worked to create this fantastic piece of music. As soon as I read the title, two versions shot through my mind, The Animals and the one from the Sin City film (obviously death punch screamy). But for the future, it will be this one! And be careful with props, not only because of the risk of injury but also fueled the expectation that someone finally burns down the cursed "House of the rising sun"!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥 ❤️❤️❤️

Amanda Yarbro

That was GREAT!! Loved it. Just wondering how many of those that suggested it are also Avi Kaplan fans, he's done it before. That might be why it was requested. Loved your spin on it!

Jess Teerlink

I’m so glad I joined patreon! I may have to leave since I’m a poor college student but I’ve really enjoyed being a part of this community and supporting Geoff. Loved this video! I really love this song!

Sandra Ni

Any day that I wake up to a new song of yours (or Voiceplay 😉) it's gonna be a good day. (After I looked up what hangnails are [English isn't my first language], I appreciate it even more. These things were invented as torture I think 😉) Thank you & Kathy so much for your time and efforts 🙏

Elisha

I don’t think I’ve ever listened to this song before. There was a version in my guitar learning book when i was 9, but I never seriously tried to play it myself … This was great!

Sarah Smith

wow such an interesting take on this song!!love d it keep up the amazing work😊

Veronika Troll

Wow, wow, wow and wow. It will sure be a hit again! I loved how different is it from the classic version. Loved everything about it, especially the rock element made it super interesing. Thank you! Oh and btw you are pretty cool, don't worry:) and happy birthday here too

Cynthia Ross

He has so...you just don't see them. Listen closer to Elenore Rigby. ;)

Sunniva Melhuus

Omg omg, this was absolutely fantastic! I did not expect this spin on it and I love it all the more. It is so meaty and yummy and all those positive food-related adjectives.

Alison L

Really enjoyed this, thanks

Gillian Drysdale

check out Love yourself it has Geoff and Eli clones!

Cynthia Ross

Yes please! I’m such a fan of blues and I’ve always felt he’d be a natural fit for it. So glad I’m not the only one. 😁

Cynthia Ross

Oh that’s right!!! I forgot about that video!

Gillian Drysdale

as someone who was around in the 60s it’s very interesting to hear such a different take on a song loved it!

Caitrin Grimshaw

This is so amazing!! Sat with my headphones with it giving me shivers. Such a great arrangement. 😍✨

Louise Bathurst

O.M.G! I honestly wasn't sure what to expect with this song but I knew it was going to be good. Listening to it, good was an understatement. That was OUTSTANDING. I just know this is going to be my new favorite song well done 💕

Meg Richardson

Thanks so much Geoff and Kathy, for another amazing arrangement, a little bit quirky (just like us all) but all so fun. Such interesting contrasts and highlights, never a boring section.

Barazion

I've done prison ministry, and this tune is used many times to the words of 'Amazing Grace'. When you hear 100 men at chapel singing this it can be moving.

Sophie Llewellyn Smith

Wow, the folk vibe at the start, the humming, the rhythm, the medallion 😉...It's a winner! Thank you, Geoff (and Kathy!).

Jacklinka

Okay, now I understand the suitcases, but don't catch the other clues. Black shirt, the tv boxes, the candles, the lighter? BTW, the studio looks like an escape room :) Very unusual version of the song. Geoff, I love where your voice turns softer (4:35-4:36), it's beautiful. Please sing more with this soft voice. I love the singling along with the guitar beats from 2:55, it suddenly rises the heart rate. I imagine how hard is to sing in a room without conditioner (says a girl from Israel). Please be careful when you play with fire :)

Derek Sandlin

I will never say sun the same way again. Just Fantastic

Geoff Castellucci

It's on the roadmap. We've worked with JOSE from Rockapella a bunch, and Bryant has subbed for me once or twice when live shows were still a thing. They're the very best group of guys.

Geoff Castellucci

Seriously though, i singed my fingers reeeeeel baaaaad. Owwwwwieeee!

RosaitaW

Oh my, this is so beautiful, I had never heard this song before actually, but your cover is fantastic, make me think about the story behind it, even make a video game out of it! And...you're always COOL, Geoff!

Cindy Barber

That was really cool to listen to! I love the take on it, it was fantastic, and glad you all survived the video shoot!

Sophie Plourde

Geoff this is amazing!!! I came into this a little biased knowing that Avi has been singing this tune for years and I love his version too, but I knew your creativity would shine on this one😄 I love how catchy it is, I love all the interesting things going on in the background, and I personally think you placed the low notes PERFECTLY. Huge thanks to you and Kathy for all the hard work on these songs and videos - you have no idea how big of a difference it makes in my life ( and I'm sure everyone else's too) 😉💞

Rachael Heidi

I cannot stop listening to this. I keep repeating it over and over. So good! Literally every new release is my new favourite. So much talent, save some for the rest of us! 😅😎

Hugmany Foemen

I can't believe I didn't guess this. YT even put the Animals version on my suggested list only yesterday! Looking forward to repeated plays after work

Cassandra Collins

This is *chef's kiss*. This is a song I grew up with (hippie/folk singer parents) and sometimes sing at karaoke. Your rendition is gorgeous, and as always I find your range amazing. Thank you.

Robert Ferney

Very nice. Geoff, your work is consistently awesome. I suspect that this was exactly the treatment of the song that the requesters were asking for.

Seren_Builds

With songs that have been around for so long and performed by everybody and their momma, it's hard to add your own twist and make them your own in a way. Well, you did it. 😁 Well done, I enjoyed it A LOT.

Janet Towles

Instant addiction to this song!! 🔥🔥

Rio

This video and performance is so incredibly cool, you definitely gained many coolness points with this! 😁 The arrangement is intriguing and interesting and the singing is incredible as always!

Jennifer

Loved it! I couldn't remember what song this was until you started singing. I really like your arrangement too. You are cool. 😉

Jessica

Absolutely amazing geoff love it

Angie Woollard

One more thing…I LOVE how much research you did here. You seem to have really delved deep into the origins and history of this song which, to me, just adds yet another layer of awesomeness to your masterpiece.

Lioba

Nope, it's not just you 😁

Sandy Mrotek

I LOVE this song and you did such a wonderful job of it. The complete use of your range was fantastic. Thank you. I love the low bass of your singing and by using that you have now made it a keeper as songs go. I've already listened to it a number of times and will continue to.

Lois McCray

I was about 10 when The Animals released this. I heard it on the Wolfman Jack Radio Show on a little transistor radio I kept under my pillow. I would listen to the Wolfman every Saturday night.

Nellie Daugherty

Maybe Eli doesn't have clones yet (on screen), but there's time (and hope).

Nellie Daugherty

Ok. First, I seriously appreciate that you didn't make a scream fest out of this one. There are songs and performances in which I love that edginess, but I have not been convinced that it's the best vocal performance style for many a piece of music. This piece is one. That you took it low was, in my opinion, the very best thing you could have done with it, and you were so clearly and obviously in your bailiwick doing so. Further, your high vocal harmonies? *chef's kiss* Peter Barber says your arranging ability is your secret weapon, and absolutely yes, it is, but doesn't outshine your vocal abilities. Your performance on this one doesn't require the visual, only the audio--my definition of convincing. And the video is great. I hope this racks up the views and listens.

Hunter

Who knew someone could make something as simple as humming….difficult. Darn it. 🤣

Dan Black

Very nice! As always, loooooove those resonating low notes! Guaranteed to make Elizabeth Zharoff (The Charismatic Voice) giggle!

Eastana(4 Kraken)

As I watched/listened to this (excellent) rendition, thunder started and fit so well that I am forced to admit the feel you managed for this cover was perfect. Thanks. Also Rockappella-well-rocks.

Hana Keindlová

I am not sure for what I am most excited about this. Wheter the fact that you did one of my all-time favourite Animals song and tune in general or the fact I guessed it correctly from the photo earlier! But for sure I am so so happy and delighted you made this cover. For me, I like to see how you remake songs to fits you better, so, the bigger is the difference between your usual songs and the suggested one, the more I want to see how you can play with it. I like to imagine how you would interpret e.g. Caribbean Blue which is completly different. But back to House of the Rising Sun. I wholeheartedly agree with your description of the song. I just feel like you should maybe check again on the definition of the word "cool" in a dictionary because you're many things, but definitely not, let me quote you here, "the most UN-cool person". Seriously. The rest of your text even confirms that. Thank you and HUGE massive thanks to Kathy as well for bringing this all time classic legendary tune to new and interesting life. Thank you. And now I am going back to listen to it on repeat.

MarySue Crossett

another great job geoff keep up the great work we love you and your songs

D McKim

Well, this is unexpected. I would not have thought of this song to have you cover because it is so far away from your normal style. I like your version better than the animals or others who covered it, I didn't like the screamy way they did it.

KJayhawks27

I love it but because you sang it I don’t usually care for it but a bass voice adds a dynamic that makes it feel different along with the guitar and your higher personalities😂

Patricia Orick

I love the Animals version but I think I might like this one even more.

Jordan Hollis

OH MY... I was actually dancing with you Geoff! LOVED IT! Can't wait to share it with everyone I know!

Jacklinka

Geoff, you are responsible now for this song is stuck in my head for two days along! Both Animals (classic) and your bass thundering! I don't need earphones, my mind is playing itself. Hugs for that!

Will Bracknell

Geoff, you are an amazing singer, and I am so grateful that I discovered you through Youtube's suggestions; the first song I heard you sing was "Blackbird", and I was thunderstruck at your talent. Keep up the good work.

Viktoria Kovacs

oh this is good. gonna be stuck in my head forever...

Angie Woollard

Further observations and appreciations: 1. I really like how ALL the Geoffs react to the trunk lid closing. Additionally, all the Geoffs look at each other from time to time and it really sells the concept. 2. In a recent VP chat, someone asked if you and Layne would be able to sing if you couldn't move your hands. I think that person was expecting a jokey answer, but both of you gave good explanations for why you do this - one of which being so the viewer can correlate the sounds being made with who is making them. The back-up Geoffs do this beautifully in this song, and now I'm really looking forward to the karaoke tracks even more than I was before. 3. The way this song builds and builds is brilliant. I'm starting to recognize your song-building style, Geoff, and I love it. The last section of this song has a real runaway train feel to it, accentuated by one of the audio effects. Even though the tempo doesn't get faster, it kind of feels like it does because of this, which makes it super exciting to me.

Chris Glenister

Wow I'm speechless😳 that was incredible

Doug Beck

Incredible rendition! Loved hearing so much of your range!

Christine Stromberg

Fascinating. The only version I knew was from The Animals, back in 964. They were a group from the North East of England with Eric Burdon as lead singer, who had a fairly low voice but of course not this low. Interesting to hear it this way, more upbeat, less blues. Good job. As always. :)

Liz Munro

Is it possible please for you to please sing Kenny Rogers The Gambler or Coward Of The County?

Larry Haynes

After hearing the first line of this, my reaction was....cool! The second thought was that you should soon do " Wayfaring Stranger ", along the lines of Trace Adkins. Just seems to suit you. Anyway, thank you for all the great music, it is more of a blessing than you know!

Joyful Yes

Eric Burdon is pretty amazing too though. His vocals of this song (which has been covered so. Many. Times) were my favorite... Till Geoff's.

Randiskye

Angie, you said it best. I love this arrangement!
