Hey MinnMax, and Maddy! What big gaming franchise is gonna get revived this year?

McGreevy

What's the best Sunday take out meal?

Boondock-Bandit

How do you do, MinnMax crew! What imagery or action from a videogame do you view as “iconic”? For me, the floating bodies in Control always wow me. Its such a striking image - creepy, feels unique to the game, and always looks darn cool. Thanks y’all!

Steve Bellegarde

Hey MinnMax, On a game’s title screen. If it says “Press Any Button”. Which one are you hitting? I always try to see if it will take just moving the analog stick.

Jason Wojnar

As maybe the only MinnMax listener in Ukraine, I just want to bring up that for the past week or so most people in Kyiv have had about 4 hours of electricity a day at random times (if that, some go more than a day without any) and many buildings are completely without heat during one of the coldest winters in recent memory. A russian drone also landed close enough to my apartment for me to see the light of the explosion from my window.

Jacob Mazanowski

Question for Maddy and Congrats!: When coming up with the idea for the pod and going for it, did you reach out to anyone for advice and what developer/creator/journalist etc. in the games industry inspired you? Was there any non games industry person that inspired you?

Bryce Blackmore

Betterquest adjacent question! With so much technology and algorithms etc everywhere I'm trying to get back to being more analogue, listening to CDs, vinyl and some actual DVDs instead of streaming. I've found that having less choice has made decisions on what I do be more impactful and often results in me focusing more on it. Is there anything in your life you do, have done or plan on doing that is similar? And if you currently do something, has it made any difference to the way you do things?

Lucas Immanuel

For years I was so curious why it seemed independent games, in contrast to independent films, had so much more financial success, with the “I made this on nights and weekends and now I have millions of fans” story being far more common in games (even if that’s still very survivorship bias-y). But I’m starting to wonder if indie games are more analogous to YouTube than independent films, with individuals or small teams making hyper-specific media and playing algorithms rather than traditional distribution. Do you think this is a fair comparison?

Ethan Quist

What's the best media to disassociate to?

mapleviolet

Do you find it strange how games that haven't been released are eligible for prizes at IGF? Or do you think it's good that games can get recognition and build buzz from IGF in this way? (Do you have any comments on the IGF nominations this year in general?)

K-Ham

Congrats on Mothership, Maddy and team! If you could teleport back and speak your younger self, what game franchise would you tell them to (a) invest MORE time into and (b) invest LESS time into?

Lamb Dance

Hey MinnMax, this week the Astra Awards controversially gave a dog (Indy from the film “Good Boy”) their award for Best Performer in a Horror Movie. Since you have an Astra Award winning podcaster among you, I thought it be worth asking: Would you be offended or pleased if you were nominated for an award, but lost to a cute animal?

Neal McMahon

Baldur’s Gate 3 has already cracked my top 15 games of all time. I’m about 60 hours in—and somehow still not done with Act 1. It got me thinking about other all-time favorites and the moment I realized, while playing, that a game was something special. BG3 definitely fits that category for me. How about you

Kanchilla

Question for the writers: how do you feel having stakes or attention on what you publish affect how you go about doing your writing? I write for my own blog for fun but only when I feel inspired and motivated but I feel like sometimes I wonder how I would change what I write if I was being pushed to do so P.S. good luck for mothership, looking forward to reading!

Memory Card

The Switch year in review stats just went out and Animal Crossing has topped my list for the fifth time since I started playing. What are you most played games you still go back to?

Ken H (Kenny2Slice)

Hello all! Strength to Minnesota and every where else across the US having to endure the recent and ongoing events. What is the best compliment you have ever received? And I mean a genuinely good compliment, not anything silly or backhanded in anyway. Something that made you feel good or even aware of your own abilities or place in people’s lives.

Nick deVries

Love seeing Maddy on the pod! In an industry where self-promotion feels like a necessity, how do you all handle that side of it? I have to imagine that nobody enjoys doing it, so how do you balance that with genuinely trying to push business ventures like a new website or even MinnMax? Thanks, love the show!

Troy Ellison

Hello Minnmax! Is there any aspect of your life/person that you feel could potentially be cursed? Just a specific situation you have to deal with you feel no one else has. For example, I feel like my hands dry out worse than other people's, but specifically my left hand. If I don't liberally moisturize several times a day, my left hand completely dries and splits in a million different places, causing pain, bleeding and difficulty moving. Is there anything in your life you feel like only you go through like it's a curse?

Memory Card

Congratulations on creating Mothership! As a woman always looking for more diverse voices in games media, the site is the best news I've heard in months.

Ray Sweat

Is there any reason you don't clip your discussions on the podcast over new games and post them as a review of the game on YouTube? As someone who searches reviews of games all the time before buying, I think this would help generate traffic. I also think your "discussion" style of review where you don't really give out a grade, and just say you recommend it, is preferable for a lot of people. For example, if I could just listen to your 10 minute discussion on Metroid Prime 4 on YouTube, it would help me determine if it was a game I wanted to buy or not. It would also make me interested in subscribing to the channel and podcast if I was discovering it for the first time. Love you guys. Keep up the great work.

Frostphorus

For you all being computer loving cohorts- I feel like you glossed over an important aspect of the steam's hardware announcements. Valve has been quietly funding technology to automatically: 1. play windows games on Linux 2. play android games on Linux 3. play big PC games on little PCs (x86 to ARM) potential here is native steam games on phones, tablets, and smaller lower power devices. this is pretty cool and i declare should've been on the list for best thing. Question for any cohort who's eyes are not fully rolled back yet, what are your hopes for the potential of this new technology?

Vilis

Given this week's Bonus Pod, do y'all have a favorite anti-authoritarian game? Mirror's Edge comes to mind, but just interested if the Cohorts and Maddy have more recent picks, or maybe a forgotten hidden gem in that vein.

Tess

Hello! I was wondering why aren't there any games where you kiss men? Like a game where the player character kisses a man regardless of player choice. The only game I can think of where this happens is Bayonetta 3. Can you think of any others?

J.Vaso

We all know that MinnMax has two n's for Minneapolis/Minnesota, but what if you weren't a gaming outlet and needed to represent Minneapolis/Minnesota with a non-gaming term? How would you shoehorn Minn into your name if you were a film outlet? Comic book outlet? Etc. If you were a podcast that exclusively discussed Linkin Park's third album would you call yourselves Minnutes to Midnite?

CrabPalace

Is your experience with a game just the thoughts you have while you play the game?

RynaGoGo

What blue collar job would you never take no matter the pay? Personally I would never do roofing. It’s either dangerous and freezing or dangerous and sweltering. Much respect to the roofers out there. I would be dead before the end of the day. Also Fuc* ICE

Has Post-Endgame Marvel gotten a bad rap?

Nicholas White

Hello everyone! Seeing that this this the predictions episode reminded me that I was recently thinking about 2026 Controls Predictions. Will you attack in Wolverine with Square or R1?? Will GTA6 have the same cover system from the past twenty years?? Would love to hear if the group has any controls predictions for any games or systems for this year. Thanks for all you do! Nick from Florida.

Fancygraham

I recently heard the Friends per Second podcast call Dan Ryckert’s glowing review of Metroid Prime 4 out. Specifically, Ralph aka SkillUp takes issue with Ryckert saying 4 is as good as the original Metroid Prime. Where do you draw the line at “it’s just a matter of taste?” Is there a point where you feel the need to quell someone’s feelings about a game and tell them “it’s not that good…”?

Nate Voris

Have you ever taken home leftovers from a restaurant just to be polite? Went out to dinner with family over the holidays, everyone's food was terrible, but when it came time to leave everyone except me asked for to-go boxes. Was I being rude to the chef and restaurant staff by not asking for a box for my awful food? What is the proper restaurant etiquette in this scenario?

Alex Hutchinson

With Heated Rivalry taking over our(or maybe just my) social media feeds, what video game characters’ rivalry do you suspect is a cover-up for a years-long situationship?

Chad Butler

Who’s your favorite video game character you share a first name with?

Gooseberry

Hola! What is your favorite documentary you watched recently?

ennui_enthusiast

what's your favorite mini game in your least favorite biggie game?

Joe Dean

Last week when asked what characters look cool Kyle suggested Sonic. Reminder ugly Sonic from the first trailers and the Chip and Dale movie exists. On a related note, I've never watched any Sonic films, but I would watch the first Sonic movie if they release a version with ugly Sonic. Is there a cut or version of an existing movie you would love to watch? A Director's Cut you want, deleted scenes added in, or maybe even the butthole cut of Cats?

SlyCut

Hello all, What's the best game that isn’t fun to play?

Test

Have there ever been any games that you enjoyed discussing or listening to analysis of more than actually playing them? For instance, I really enjoyed playing through Bioshock, but found that I loved talking with people about their experiences playing it, or watching videos from essayists I respect on their analysis of the game's themes and development.

Random Oil Man

What game is the Miss Congeniality of video games?

JeffM's Backlog

Hey CLCs, What's with the recent trend toward hating on big budgets in game development? Budget is not evil. Budget is employee salaries. Budget is more devs that have jobs. Budget is our pal.

Travis in Fargo

Are butt cracks A) Funny B) Gross or C) Kind of Sexy?

Thom Blackburn

Firstly, fuck ice. What kind of future do telltale style games actually have? Thanks, Thom Blackburn Ps. Fuck ice again

thejjuan1

Hello Minnmax crew. Meta just announced the shut down of both Sanzaru games and Twisted Pixel. Leaving only Camouflaj as the Meta VR team left. Is the future for VR gaming dead? With both PlayStation and Meta leaving the VR market.

Juniper Cain

Hello Minnmax and hello Maddy! Mothership, and that part of the focus is on *identity* in games, looks wonderful, and I'm very grateful as a trans woman to see it's appearance! I'm curious when and how you began thinking about the art-form this way, and do you think queerness (and therefore societally having to think more deeply about your own identity outside of the assumed defaults) contributes to this lens?

BabyDinky

Everyday my Wife and I leave for work we leave the TV on a random channel for our dog. Lately I have been coming home to David Letterman. It got me thinking that Ben reminds me of him. Which cohort reminds you of a Celebrity/ Famous Person? Side note isn’t it weird we have to call people famous just because they are on Television often 🤣

Caitlin

As a woman very into gaming since a young age, psyched to learn about Mothership. There's still a huge skew in representation in games media that can create vibes -- sometimes accidentally -- that aren't as welcoming for folks that aren't cis straight men. Q for Maddy: In addition to centering content written by women, are there any other aspects of how Mothership will work that you hope creates or enhances that women-centered vibe? For instance, tone, topics, format, etc. (That said, just centering women contributors definitely does a lot of the legwork, and maybe that's all that's needed. If so, this question isn't very interesting so feel free to ignore!)

Dominic Cichocki

Hello Maddy and crew, How do we get more people to read games criticism again? Is it just a matter of providing better content than ever that people want to read? Or is there a benefit to even a site like Minnmax pushing a writing section of their own to create this idea that, no matter where you go, the best minds in games journalism still write, and you're missing out if you're not reading? PS: Fuck ICE

Travis in Fargo

What’s something you love to hear people rant or pontificate about? For me, it’s gotta be Lord of the Rings lore. I personally can’t get enough of that.

Adam D

What's the one game you can't believe hasn't happened? For me it's how we haven't seen an asymmetrical multiplayer Home Alone game with one side setting the traps and the other being the Wet Bandits trying to break into a variety of locations from the movie.

Rikimaru

Hey MinnMax! With the recent departure of Final Fantasy IX artist Toshiyuki Itahana, the hope for a remake seems to be fading. This also marks one of the first years where there isn't a confirmed project in the series until FF7 part 3 or an expansion for 14 get announced. So, my eye turns to Final Fantasy XIII and a potential remaster or collection. What is everyone's thoughts and feelings on the game (or trilogy) in 2026? Worth noting, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth and previously XIII-2 director, Naoki Hamaguchi, recently noted a generational shift at Square, with younger developers naming 13 as their first or favorite in the series.

Poofydoo

Even though I love animal crossing and I’m looking forward to the update, are some people giving the 3.0 update too much attention? I feel like it’s being set up to simply rage about how it’s not causing people to return to the game.

Sky Fellowship

Care to give a weird award? Something from a game you want to praise but would otherwise never get recognition. For example I want to award The Satnley Parable Ultra Deluxe with the best hole in all of gaming.

Blanderson

Hey Cohorbies! In the spirit of 2026 predictions, I have to say I’ve felt like the tinfoil hat guy for the last several years speculating about Xbox hardware becoming a pc-lite experience. With more and more reports indicating that’s likely their next move, I’m desperate to hear the crews predictions on what the next gen Xbox pc hybrid will look like? Will it be upgradable? If so will those be 1st party only like their current SSD expansion strategy? Y’all are the best!

Fachasaurus

Has a video game ever unlocked a new level of appreciation for everyday life? Only after seeing the rain physics in DriveClub did I really start to notice the rain while driving IRL. Now I find myself mesmerized by how water beads pool up on the windshield or swishes away with the wipers. Something so mundane in our day to day that you wouldn't have thought about without experiencing a version of it in a video game!

Danielle3487

My partner and I are making a roadtrip from Raleigh, NC to to Minneapolis, NC for a convention / community gathering in early March, and I was curious if y'all have any must have stops along the way. Also, what is quintessential to a roadtrip? And lastly...FUCK ICE

Pelicanman

Games love asking us to hold down buttons to perform specific, dramatic actions (e.g, yanking open a door), for sometimes uncomfortable amounts of time, apparently thinking this adds tension and immersion. One, does this actually work on anyone? Two, what’s the most annoying button to hold down like this and why is it the left bumper?

Jonathan and Holly Katzman

Victoria Tran recently put out her top five hear-me-outs of 2025, which included the chaos gates from Hades 2 and the Mailroom from Blue Prince. What are your top inanimate hear-me-outs of the past year?

Clayton Carroll

I love JeffM's Thursday streams. Not only is he great to hangout with, but he has shown me so many amazing rouge-likes. I loved when he streamed Baby Steps. I found it fascinating to watch someone who had mastered the games mechanics. Now that we all know how important of a game it is to JeffM. I would love if he would stream it at least once more, if he feels like it. JeffM you make Thursdays my favorite day of the week. Thanks for all the good times and great game recommendations.

Daniel May

Hi Maddie, crossover Triple Click fan here. What prediction(s) you've made in past years do you consider your best and vice versa?

Yo Adriaaan

While snowboarding over the holidays, I heard some bangin Led Zeppelin that was totally new to me. This is probably because my middle school listening was dominated by their compilation album (think expanded greatest hits) Mothership(!) instead of individual albums. For Maddy and the gang: what are your thoughts on Greatest Hits albums and is there room in the gaming space for a similar type of curation? I feel like any attempts like Steam Curators have mostly died on the vine.

Conner McCabe

Hi Ben, Jeff’m, Janet, and Metroid Myers. Is there an age someone can be that is too old to want a balloon for walking around purposes?

Jack Seage

Ahoy hoy, Maddy M. and the CLC's! I just finished up my first ever playthrough of Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, and I hated it! How do you all feel the moment you realize something getting near universal acclaim just isn't clicking with you? Any hot takes on certified classics?

Caroline

Since you said you wanted more BetterQuest goals - today I completed my lifelong goal of becoming a published author. Shout out to the Pew Pew Bang girlies for the great advice on Ping Pals about reviews a few months ago! (You don't need to read this on air, but if anyone's curious it's A Barista's Guide to Love & Larceny by Caroline Bonin)

Rene Nunez

I just beat Final Fantasy 1 because my girl wants to watch Advent Children. I refuse to until I've beat FF1-7. What stupid barriers have you ever placed on yourself that you stuck by to the end?

CaffeineDad

Hey gang! Maddy, I’m a huge fan of your work from Kotaku to Polygon to Triple Click, and I will continue following you to Mothership! Thank you all for your recent Bonus Pod about Minnesota. As a Latino and a first-generation American it means so much to me to hear voices I respect use their platform to address a clearly awful situation. I hope you all stay safe! As an unrelated question, what is your least favorite ice level in a video game? One that makes you really say “fuck ICE.” Mine is the ice cave puzzle in Pokemon Gold. I got stuck pushing that sliding boulder around for so long as a kid that I know I was saying “fuck ICE” for a few days afterward.

Shaun McAlpne

I'm a dad to a young boy with down syndrome. What is your favorite game for inclusion? I really liked Wildwood Down as being a game where the main protagonist has down syndrome.

Alex McMillan

Hi MinnMaxers, How do you tend to sit whilst gaming? Are you leaned back or forward? Got one leg crossed over the other? I've recently found I've forgotten how to comfortably sit whilst playing stuff so I'm hoping your suggestions will help me find a good position again. All the best, Alex McMillan

MrBump

Hello, love from NZ. Stay safe! What piece of non video game media has inspired the most video games?

Steven Toth

I played a lot of SNES games over the break and I guess I don’t understand why Nintendo doesn’t want to invest more in this space. With game development getting longer and more expensive I feel pretty confident that Nintendo could make a Super Mario World 2 with a smaller team and a reasonable time window and that it would do really well financially, even just based of nostalgia. If they did do this, what 16bit style series would you like to see back on the switch 2 as digital-only, $30 games?

James Pinto

Howdy folks. I still feel like we get stuck on the divide of games based on gender. How do you all go about bridging that gap or maybe what are the best games that are already doing that, maybe something that is being taken from one genre and being implemented in a great way in another.

Sergio

Factoring in narrative and gameplay potential, which game/franchise do you want to swap the hero and villain roles? I personally want to be Eggman. I want to cruise in my eggmobile, I want to soar in my egg balloon, and I want to run all over with his round body as I battle against that blasted blue blur.

Alon Zwick

Hi MinnMax! Can we get some more non-gaming 2026 Predictions? Any kind of called shot you want to make! Big or small! some example questions if you need to get the ball rolling: Who will win the Super Bowl or World Cup? What movies are going to win Oscars? How many books are you going to read in 2026? How often will people ask if Ben is leaving the podcast after his poll question?

mantaguy

Nice to see Maddy on the show! Reading her work was a pretty important touchstone towards myself gaining a more open-minded view of gender in games, and I've always found myself agreeing with all her views (when they weren't about Bayonetta 3, that is, but hey; it can't rain all the time). Does this appearance mean that a Pew Pew Bang X Mothership crossover is in the cards? P.S. Get melted ICE!

SenttheProphet

I am curious on the trends of women in gaming, has it been steadily increasing this century? Was there a spike after covid? Along these lines, I am surprised there has not been a capitalization in the past few years on a few "mainstream" women games - i.e a brand new Animal Crossing or Sims. Is there one coming soon?

Christian Jimenez

Hello Cohorts and Maddy! With Metroid Prime 4 getting mixed to good reviews, how many "average" games does it take for a franchise to go down a notch. What comes next for it? Stick to 2D only? Have Retro redeem itself with Prime 5? Thank you.

draintheswampert

Which game has canonically the most irredeemable main playable character?

John Lee

What game would you most like to see a remake of in the vein FF7? A single game reimagined but blown out into 3 separate games?

Nannooskeeska

What's your gaming-related new year's resolution? Mine is to stop buying games on sale that I'm not planning on playing in the next few weeks. I already have way too many games on Steam, I don't need to keep adding more.

LawlWorthy

Thoughts on the new wave soft drinks like Olipop, and Poppi?

beebat

Hi Maddy! With your history at Kotaku and other games media, what do you think the best format is for getting your point across to an audience for a game review? Written article, video review, or a conversational podcast?

LawlWorthy

What’s a gamertag you saw in the wild that sticks with you? I’ll never forget Swan Ronson

AnAttackCorgi

No question for this week. Thinking of all of you guys and hoping all our Minnesota friends and family stay safe out there.

Alex

I've been recently thinking about MMORPGs - how much of an impact the genre had and how much joy and raw human experiences we had the privilage to enjoy during the golden age. Understandably, minnmmax doesn't talk about MMORPGs much, so I would like to ask, is there anyone in the Minnmax crew that were into MMORPGs? And as a follow-up, were there any memorable experiences worth sharing?

LawlWorthy

“AAA” gaming. The title used to be an indicator of a games quality, but it seems to be solely used to describe a games budget these days. When did that shift happen, does anyone remember?

Swansonge

Hey MinnMax, who is the best dog in video games?

Michael Nickley

Hi guys! With everything going on in the country (and Minneapolis specifically) right now, how have you been feeling about keeping MinnMax’s usual shows rolling as normal? Has talking about games felt strangely trivial, or has it been a welcome distraction? Whatever the case, please be sure you’re taking care of yourselves and each other as best you can! Sending you all strength from Philly.

Galexzzz

Do any of you have any yearly gaming traditions? One that I have is to play a classic as the first game I beat at the start of a new year. Kinda like looking back as I look forward to another year in gaming. In previous years I’ve done Bioshock and Shadow of the Colossus, and in 2026 I just finished the original Metal Gear Solid for the first time!

Kraven Morcome

Hi Maddy! Looking forward to the website. Ben Hanson is constantly saying how he has broken the glass ceiling for women in games media. Do you think this is an accurate statement? For context he has hired 4 women, hard to argue with that. Also I know it would mean a lot to Ben if you picked this as question of the week. Thanks!

Kelsey Sims

Hey gang! I hope everyone is staying safe. Congrats Maddy on Mothership, can't wait to see what's in store! Janet, your new hair is killer. Boys, ... you're also doing great. Now for the question. Everyone knows Samus, Zelda and Lara Croft - but who are some of the more under appreciated women in games? I've always had a fondness for Mae from Night in the Woods, and I love the women of Final Fantasy 13

WeGoGiant

Good news everyone! Awesome Games Done Quick raised over 2.45 million dollars last week for the Prevent Cancer Foundation.

Graham Jones

For the Minnmax awards, Is best thing just the best GALOT of the year?

Nathan Ryer

Hey MinnMax! When are they finally going to make Metroid Prime Pinball 2? Or even better, a physical table? What other game franchise could use a pinball spinoff, Tomb Raider, Hamtaro, Rhythm Heaven, etc.?

Brocquin Alexander

What's your favorite restaurant that's too expensive to go to frequently.

Juan Ridgeway

Hello, Southeast-Northeasterners. My question is. How do you feel about mini-games in games? I'm replaying GTA 5 in preparation for GTA 6 and I forgot how many activities there are -- like tennis, golf, and even yoga. This got me thinking. Even though mini-games usually take you out of a game, ironically, they give me the sense that I'm inhabiting the world.

Jose Alfonso

To Maddy: Congratulations on Mothership! Once the site launches, do you have any dream journalistic pieces you would like have Mothership explore? Wondering more specifically, is there anything you’re looking forward to exploring through Mothership that was not possible through others such as Polygon or Kotaku?

Isa

Hi Maddy and MinnMax! Huge congrats to Maddy on the launch of Mothership later this month. On Triple Click this week, you predicted a AAA game would soon brag about being "Gen-AI Free." Do you think "Human-Made" is actually going to be enough of a selling point for gamers? Or do you think the future will inevitably be blurred and 'Human-Curated' where AI handles the grunt work, scale, and cost savings while humans focus on the finishing touches?

pork bun powered

Hi MinnMax and Maddy! What's your dream article topic if view count, research budget, and time were not concerns?

resnet

Hi Maddy and MinnMax! Besides the MinnMax's prediction, do you partake in any new year divination, zodiac, horoscope, etc. tradition?

PhillyYeetSteak

Hey Minnmax and Maddy! I recently bought a replacement battery for my ps5 controller off amazon for like $15, and now its charge lasts longer than it ever has. Do you have any third party/unofficial gaming purchases that you are especially happy with?

Brian Sodano

Sup fam! If your younger self time traveled 30 years into the future to today, what things would seem more advanced than expected, and what would be less futuristic than your young self would have expected?

CptCobblePot

Good day Minnmax, Is bread the best restaurant appetizer because it’s normally free? What if we always got a bloomin onion instead?

landsealion

If you could swap the characters from two games, which two games would make the best games?

Memory Card

Do you remember the first time you played as a woman in a game, either as a character option or as the set protagonist?

Chree McGee

Hey Minnmax! I'm currently drafting a prequel story for Ocarina of Time for fun. What in your opinion is the best prequel of time, and if you could have a prequel for any piece of media, what would it be?
