MinnMax's Ben Hanson, Kelsey Lewin, Jacob Geller, and Kyle Hilliard are joined by former MinnMax Guest Cohort Alanah Pearce as she launches her own production company called Charred Pictures that focuses on adapting video games to TV and movies in a way that's friendlier to independent developers. We then attempt to build a list of 25 essential games for gamers to play to fully understand the scope of the medium... but with a poisonous twist. Let us know in the comments what you would have included on the list. After that, we answer your wonderful questions submitted here on Patreon!

Alanah has access to a time machine right? Or an identical twin.

Vilis

Ms. Pac-Man gotta be on there.

To support the Chrono Trigger argument, Sarah just played it and among her reactions were "Why didn't the game industry learn all these lessons for the past 30 years?" And just loving the Pixel Art. And while having Disco Elysium on here is wild, it is also correct. People need to learn that in a video game you can literally die of embarrassment. Hades also ties into the broader culture with the Greek Mythology angle, to help bridge a person into gaming. Returnal is also much harder. Sims 2 is the representative, with the college expansion pack. Starcraft definitely needs to be on there, cuz it kicked off Esports in a big way. Taking Super Mario Bros. off is an insane thing to even suggest. Inside is very good, but it is not going to be a cultural touchstone. I will say that the list had a single player bias, shown quintessentially in tossing a shuriken at Street Fighter 2, and Kelsey was 100% correct in moving to take That Dragon Cancer off, and I respect Ben's shuriken. I respect the final list.

The moment super Mario Bros and the words "better than super Mario world" came out after? Y'all wouldve never seen a poison shuriken thrown faster, y'all nuts 🤣

I think HaloCE has to be there. It’s the first console shooter that figured out twin stick controls and pretty much made Xbox the multiplayer console.

I actually support the early Super Smash Bros Ultimate inclusion but I think the interpretation that it is representative of too many games is a little bit off to as to why I think it deserves it. It is the giant ass Coffee Table Book of video games. There's not enough detail to build out intimate familiarity with all of the games that it includes, but there but it has such a breadth and just enough richness of representation to be a curiosity-maker and conversation-starter.

Hi Ben. I don't know if you will see this here, but you had asked about getting a key for Skate Story. I keep trying to send a message replying that I'd love one, but it keeps saying my message failed for some reason!

Doc

One thing I'd include is a text based games: We're talking Zork, NetHack, Rogue, Colossal Cave Adventure. Star Trek if you're nasty: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_(1971_video_game) Rogue I think just for its legacy would be here but CCA and Zork are the lead in's to the point and click adventure games which I think have evolved into deduction games like Golden Idol(s)

I enjoyed the discussion on 25 foundational games for a newer gamer but I'd be more interested in a list of 25 games for gamer-ass gamers that isn't a top 25 of all time. Include your stuff like Sekiro, Planescape: Torment, FF9, MGS3, Bayonetta, etc.

The lack of sports games on the list is also kind of a huge gap. I think you could probably debate between Madden/FIFA, an NBA Jam, or even Tony Hawk but definitely seems like a MinnMax specific blindspot
