What is your opinion on cover songs? Weezer is one of my favorite bands but their shows are 1/3 covers nowadays, especially after thier "Teal" album that was all covers.. I don't go to Weezer concerts to hear other band's songs! As long as they play Surf Wax America I'm happy. https://youtu.be/hfzkJZSzZxY

It's my opinion that Jaws is the most iconic movie poster of all time. What would you say is the album cover equivalent? I love this idea for a podcast, look forward to listening!

I think NY State of Mind is the best rap song of all time. It’s the perfect balance of a classic, raw NY beat, epic story telling and satisfying rhyme schemes.

Charles Davis

I recently watched the excellent Netflix show 'I am not OK with this' and 'The King of Rock & Roll' by Prefab Sprout was used to great effect in it. As if by magic I was transported back to being a kid - bouncing around my house to that song again & again and I've delighted in it being stuck in my head ever since :-) What track takes you back to your childhood? Or at least what was the last song that gave you that 'blast from the past' feeling?

Hey guys, For a quick track review, I’ve been really digging Rina Sawayama after I seen a few of her songs pop up on a few best of 2019 lists. She’s a Japanese born British songwriter and her first EP release in 2017 is wall to wall pop/R&B bangers. I’ve linked her first single off of her upcoming new record for a listen if you want, it’s for a really unique sound of bubblegummy-pop mixed with 2000s metal and I’ve had it stuck in my head since I first heard it: Apple: https://music.apple.com/gb/album/stfu/1493469433?i=1493469521 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/track/2HqIsxXupkZX6x01rBLSfm?si=N-Zs7CUaTzKsLI1OC_J9vg Thanks and congrats on the new podcast - Here’s to a long life!

If you two could give your Top 5 rappers each, that would be helpful to understand your previous connection to rap music after discussing Nas.

Tyler wade

Hey Matt! Can someone say they love an album if they have only listened to it once? Do you have an album you love but you’ve only listened to a few times? Thanks!

Mike Lynch

Andrew WK's song "Music Is Worth Living For" is simply amazing. It perfectly encapsulates his weird, positive persona. I had fallen off listening to his music, but this one (plus the live Conan performance) pulled me back in.

Hugo Aguilar

Hey Minntrax cohorts Spotify does this yearly roundup of all your favorite music from the year. Last years stats showed you which countries the bands you listen to are from. Turns out I listen to a lot of European bands manly in Norway. What none American artist or band are you a fan of? I leave with a song from a band based in Norway called Leprous I think you’ll really enjoy this track. https://youtu.be/e6lNqWINRUA

Zane Dukes

I love u2; They’re my favorite band. I know other people love them too, but why are they so lame now? Am I a dweeb? What other bands once were smart and cool but are now lame?

Alex B

I think a song and band worth dissecting would be Baltimora, and their one hit wonder "Tarzan Boy". The band's history is rather short but interesting, specifically the "vocalist" Jimmy McShane. They were like Milli Vanilli if they'd never been caught in the act. Here's a link to Tarzan Boy: https://youtu.be/_r0n9Dv6XnY

Hi Matt! Welcome back to our ears! The most interesting modern game soundtrack for me is Doom 2016. I could see influences of Meshuggah and lots of industrial music in there that just fits the rising tension and the rapid release of that tension whenever the doomslayer smashes a demon to paste. I was hoping to hear your thoughts on how deeply this soundtrack is tied to Doom's identity going forward? Thanks, Thom from Redmond, WA

When I drive through parts of rural Wisconsin, some gas stations have Sonic the Hedgehog sound effects for their the door chimes. Does Sega license the noise, or is there a conspiracy among rural gas stations to rip off Sega? Or is there another explanation for how this gaming noise appears in the great gaming deserts that makes up small town America?

King Promethus

Hey there MinnTrax! I'll ask the only music question I've ever asked other people: Is there any album you really like every song on, back to front? Not just, yes I like this style and artist so I like this song. More like every single song on this album is my jam and I could be stranded on an island with just one, any one of them. The album that made me think of this years ago was Foo Fighters - Wasting Light. I love every song on there but one; White Limo. Thanks for your time!

PhillyYeetSteak

This podcast came out at the perfect time for me. I just got a new stereo and speakers installed in my car (nothing crazy, under $150 for the stereo and 1 pair of speakers) and OH MY GOODNESS what a difference it makes. I have been listening to a LOT more music now during drives, when i was listening to podcasts almost exclusively before. So here's my question: how are you listening to music at home? Headphones? Out loud? Whats your setup, and when do you listen to music during your day? Good luck on the new podcast! Glad to see some expansion into new territory!

Joe Zwak

Dear MinnTrax, please talk about some Carseat Headrest at some point. Since finding them a few years ago they quickly jumped to the top of my all time favorite bands and I think most of their songs have a lot to dissect! Thanks!

Dylan Drazek

With the increased availability of a near infinite amount of music with streaming services, how do you see that affecting the immediate music industry, and how do you foresee the industry looking in 10 years?

Zac Murray

Hi guys, What were your top 3 albums of 2019?

James Smith

Hello! Long time listener, first time caller here! Do you think that music reviews are obsolete now that music streaming is so prevalent and we have near unlimited free access to any album at the tip of our fingers? Thanks!

Michael Gibler

Hi MinnMaxTrax! Michael from Iowa here. I wanted to link in the song from the album that I'm head over heels in love with at the moment. The song is Helplessness Blues from the album Helplessness Blues by Fleet Foxes. The album speaks to me, and I think would speak to anyone, who is living or has lived through their 20s unsure about their place in the world and where its all going. I promise it's cheerier and more hopeful than my description suggests. Hope you enjoy! https://youtu.be/7HHgedNNQco

Jonathan Dinh

Hi MinnTrax, Don’t really know your guys genre preferences but this song by one of my favorite EDM artists has gotten me through some tough times recently. It is “Get Your Wish” by Porter Robinson. I wanted to hear your opinions on it

Bob Buel

Hey Matt and Ben. First off, just wanna say how psyched I am for this show. Love the concept and love having Helgeson back on my podcast feed. But no question from me this week,, just wanted to drop you guys my favorite song ever. Without question its Howlin Wolf's "Goin Down Slow." Truly a blues standard, but his version just has a gruffness and a raw sound that hits me in my soul everytime. https://youtu.be/2KDAAx-PXGQ Thanks for doing this. And make Helgeson bring back Scorpio!

FlaminQueso

Hey howdy hey Music Lovin’ Cohorts, Tell us about yourselves. Whats your favorite album and song of all time? How old were you when that became your favorite? Follow up, do you play an instrument? Thanks, Queso

CalebMurray

Would you guys be interested in discussing Sturgill Simpsons new album Sound and Fury. It's quite different from what he has done previously I think 2019 might have pissed Sturgill off.

RAWKPARTEE

Can we talk about how great Wavves is? I’ve seen them live a few times and it is rad.

Travis Brinkley

Hey Matt and Ben, Super excited for the new podcast. I just listened to Illmatic and it immediately reminded me of good kid, m.A.A.d city from Kendrick Lamar. My song recommendation is “The Art of Peer Pressure” off of that album. It shows how Kendrick, like Nas, is a great storyteller and how he sheds light on his upbringing without glamorizing it.

Neill Smith

I would love to see reviews of music discovery services. I do not really care about interface or pricing or whatever else just straight up which algorithm produces the most hits for you personally given a song you like to start with.

Sincerly, Eric

"Never put me in your box if your shit eats tapes" is my favorite line from that Illmatic album. Gaslight Anthems "Blue Jean's and White Tee Shirt" is my favorite song of all time and probably my favorite band. Bruce Springsteen for my generation is how they were explained to me.

Duderado

Hello MinnTrax, What song automatically played on your MySpace page? As an edgy kid I had something from System of a Down like Aerials. My current favorite song is Juniper by the band Slowly Rolling Camera. I like it because it's an interesting mix of jazz and post-rock sounds with an insane guitar solo. Check it out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EdY6UmV_7hE

Micah Thompson

I feel like I could write essays about Illmatic. I saw Nas perform the album in its entirety in 2014 for the 20th anniversary. This album sparked an interest in jazz for me from the samples (i.e. I Love Music by Ahmad Jamal - sampled in The World is Yours). Duality plays a huge role throughout Illmatic. On NY State of Mind, Nas romanticizes a life of crime and the excitement that comes along with it and ends each verse saying, "I never sleep cuz sleep is the cousin of the death." He is so focused on crime, he doesn't sleep. Yet, on the song One Love, a letter to his imprisoned friend, he raps "congratulations, I heard you got a son, he looks just like ya, why don't your lady write ya?" Life back home has moved on without him. Even in the third verse, when he gets out, he's back on the streets with a bulletproof vest on, in fear for his life. Nas tells him to rise above the street life. What role should duality play in music, specifically hip hop? Also, a song I'm into right now is 'Cosmic'.m4a (yes that's the title haha - watch the entire Unlocked album video if you haven't) https://youtu.be/lE8POScGElY

Hey Minn Trax crew, With regards to physical media (vinyl or cassette), did you ever come across an album where you felt there was a huge disparity between the quality of songs on the a-side versus the b-side? If so, what album? For me it would have to be Nirvana’s Nevermind. The B-side is definitely not terrible by any means, but it just can’t to compare to the six amazing tracks that make up the A-side. As for my favorite song at the moment, it’s Invincible by Tool. https://music.apple.com/us/album/invincible/1475686696?i=1475687049

Hey MinnTrax Crew, Hey have you guys heard the song “Would You Kindly” by The Rapture Twins??? The lyrics are influenced by Bioshock. Apparently one of the band members is this guy that works at GameInformer...

Grizzled Gaming

I don’t really have anything to add, but if the following exchange doesn’t happen on a show covering James Brown tracks, it’s a missed opportunity. "What you gonna play now?" "Bobby, I don't know but what's it ever I play, It’s gots to be funky!" I can’t wait to listen!

LaRay M. Hare

Hey MinnTrax(2 Ns)!!! This is a great pair of albums. With several of my favorite songs. I wanted to ask specifically about Illmatic, on it are some of the best storytelling lyrics from the era and indeed of all time. I’m curious, with your first and then subsequent listen through what stands out to you the most from Nas? There is a through line of illusionary wordplay coupled with metaphor that I absolutely adore. LaRay M Hare aka BluMayhem

Hey All! Seeing as this generation of consoles is nearing it's end, what would you say is the best exclusive title for each of the systems (including Switch)? And, what console would you say has the best exclusives overall? Thank you, keep up the amazing work!!!!

Knobby Buckles (Dave)

What's up MinnTraxxers! I'm very excited to listen to your takes on music, and very happy that Matt Helgesen is back on the mic! My question is are there any video game-related bands that you think stand up musically to non-video game-related stuff? I've always found these types of bands to be kind of fun, but not as impactful as "real" bands - then I discovered The Protomen. They became an instant favorite because not only are they great musicians, but they songwriting and storytelling are top notch. I recommend especially this live performance of "Hold Back the Night" from MAG Fest 2020: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVCdrOOnwZM&t=3101s

AxeWieldingGoatMan

Hey MinnTrax, check out "Gidim" from Rings of Saturn.

Gal Sharpton

Thank GOD you changed the intro to the minnmax show. Sounded like an intro to a dragon quest game

Kevin

hopefully i am not too late! check out kikagaku moyo - dripping sun. japanese psychedelic band

Illmatic really helped me get thru high school. It is such a relatable album for me. Nas touched on topics and questions I had when I was a teenager. I think the album has no skippable tracks imo, love it. Fun fact, Nas did a song for the Street Fighter The Movie ost https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msL--MXueJc
