This week's episode of the MinnMax Show is going to be a bit different. First of all, we're recording it on Thursday so that we can cover the Inside Xbox event on Thursday morning (so it won't be in your Patreon-exclusive feeds on Wednesday) AND we'll be streaming it live on our YouTube channel on that Thursday as well to ensure that it gets out in time.

On this episode of the podcast, we'll have Ben Hanson, Jeff Marchiafava, Suriel Vazquez, and former Game Informer intern Jill Grodt. It's your turn to make the show better by leaving a question, topic, or anything else for us to read on the show as a comment below! We’ll choose our favorite and iam8bit will ship out a great prize for the winner! We'll stop pulling questions around noon Central on Wednesday.

On this episode of the podcast we're planning on talking about...

- The Inside Xbox gameplay reveals for the Xbox Series X

- Assassin's Creed Valhalla

- The summer roadmap of gaming reveals

You could do us a favor by subscribing to the audio version of the podcast on iTunes or your favorite podcast app, telling a friend, leaving a review, and subscribing to our YouTube channel!

Hello MinnMax! Has the time and place in which you played a game added to your overall enjoyment? I played both The Last of Us and Persona 4 Golden while doing a summer internship halfway across the country. While both games are amazing in their own right, experiencing these incredible stories made being separated from friends and family all the more bearable. Keep up the amazing work,

Glamrock Scientist

Not so much a question as a comment. Last week you discussed something to the effect of how long would it take for Jeff M's mom to beat the final boss on Sekiro. I am an avid gamer, I have played and beaten all the Soulsborne games to date, and was very excited to get my hands on Sekiro. That said, I am also in my mid 40's and found myself unable to get past Lady Butterfly. During my first two runs, I would consistently make it to her final, with my performance falling off dramatically at the 3rd run, and would completely whiff it on stage 1 by my 5th or 6th. 2 Months and countless YouTube tutorials later, I concluded that my reflexes were just a little too slow to parry. Similarly, my first person shooter performance has also began to suffer. I guess this is my way of saying you can let Mrs. M out of the hotel room. In the immortal words of Marcellis Wallis, There ain't not old timers day at the E-sports Home.

Hello M&Ms and my nemesis JeffM, Geoff with a 'G' here. Or Groffles in discord. What was there last game you bought full price? Specifically for personal entertainment reasons. You guys probably get games free for working in the industry or buy games exclusively to do work related reviews. Between games I buy on sale, have access to with a multitude of pay services like PS+, or find for free, I rarely buy games full price anymore because of a HUUUUGE backlog. Last game I bought for full price was DBZ Kakarot.

Hey friends! With all of the amazing RPG/open world-types lately like Witcher 3, Breath of the Wild and RDR2, how mind-blowing will Starfield and Elder Scrolls 6 have to be for Bethesda to get some good will back from the community?

Howdy y'all! I have a question burning a hole in my head as of late - is there a better definition for certain elements of video games that we call "video gamey"? I tend to hear it a lot as a means to call out immediately obvious game aspects, like waist-high cover or flashing items, but to me, it not only seems redundant to call those aspects of video games "video gamey", but is generally negative towards video games and how they're designed. I feel like other medium adjectives like "cartoony" or "movielike" don't seem to carry as much baggage; what is it about our current definition of "video gamey" that seems so self-deprecating? Hope you're all staying safe out there!!! :-)

Hey Minnmax crew, Building off of the Sekiro final boss and Jeff M's mom question. If you put Jeff M's mom in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, would she be able beat the whole Souls series (Dark Souls games, Bloodborne, and Sekiro) by the time the two days are up in the chamber? Could she beat in just one day in the chamber?

Hey guys! EA and Activision are indicating that there will still be games in the back half of 2020, but the number of games is clearly being impacted by COVID. The same will likely be true of other developers and publishers this year. This being a positive podcast, let’s make the most of a bad situation. Assuming you guys aren’t like people on some OTHER podcasts *coughDanTackcough* and have a backlog, this year seems to be the time to chip away at it. What games from your backlog excite you the most to finally check out? (For me, it’s the Yakuza series—I played Yakuza Kiwami around Christmas and I can’t wait to play the rest of the series). Stay safe, and thanks for the hours of entertainment!!

RickyWinterborn

so activision has done the obvious and plans to push warzone towards a fortnite style existence. good or bad? i assume theyll still release blops 5(?) this fall, and try to entice people with new content or something? how will they get us to buy a new cod now

RickyWinterborn

sekiro is the one game ive had recommended to me even tho people can't beat it. i guess giving up at the last boss is what most players do...

What’s JeffM’s favorite snack?

is it harder to get excited for ass creed valhalla after god of war? you cant touch GOW...

Hello cohorts doing well I hope. So it seems that most people are playing Animal Crossing or comfort games to help with the stressful times. Instead of these things after finishing up FF7R I instead started a new game in Darkest Dungeon. So my question is what is wrong with me?

James Smith

Hey Ben, Son of Han, and Cohorts, Since you're all at home right now, show us your favourite collectibles!

Late in April we saw the release of Trials of Mana, a ground-up remake of an originally Japan exclusive SNES game called Seiken Densetsu 3. Though the production values aren't ultra high, it's an admirable remake of a game this old in full 3D. That being said, it feels like this release was completely overshadowed by Final Fantasy 7 Remake, and seeing as they're both made by Square Enix I can't imagine why they put Trials out at this time. Aside from Titanfall 2 versus Battlefield One launching closely together, can you think of any other times a publisher/developer has seemingly put out a product only to overshadow it with another of their own IP?

Toby Martin

Hey Ben and the rest of the crew! If you’re talking about AC Valhalla do you have a time period that hasn’t been explored yet but want to see in a future AC?

Tactical Dreamer

Hi Ben and company, Do you guys experience FOMO in games? For me it mostly comes with class-based games. I love games like Diablo or Borderlands, but am often plagued by the feeling that I'm missing out if I don't play through the game as every class or at least see every class in action. I usually end up wasting hours looking up builds on YouTube for the classes I didn't play to get a sense of their abilities. Thanks, Chris Bartlett

What’s your most treasured gaming-related memorabilia?

Hey Ben and the Hansonettes! After the plethora of great bosses in FF7R, what are some of your favorite boss fights ever in a game. Mine would have to be the final boss, Soa, of the first raid in The Old Republic. Having the dodge so many mechanics, having the floors fall out from underneath you lowering your amount of room to maneuver and eventually leading to dropping down to the next floor was a lot of fun.

Joshua Caleb

Hey Ben and the Compu-friends; just wanted to clarify that you CAN play the new Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition "epilogue" content right from the start of the menu; you don't have to play the entire game over again if you don't want to :)

Kyle Silva

Hey Minnesota Maximus, its Kyle from Mississauga. I recently wrote a review for a game on Switch and while the game was doodoo, I enjoyed reviewing it because it allowed me to be creative in the ways to eviscerate it. It made me realize that I like reviewing bad games more than good games. I'm not sure if its the catharsis of dunking on games that would have otherwise wasted my time, or if its just easier to write about why a game is bad rather than how a game is good. Do you guys have the same feeling? Do you guys like writing about bad games more than good games?

Tim Lorow

This past weekend I played through The Return of the Obra Dinn in one sitting. I didn’t play it previously because I had heard it was a difficult game. However, even though it was tricky, I was able to get 80% of the facts correct by myself. Then the last bit I just looked up the answers online since it would take a lot of research and testing to get it myself. Question: At what point is it okay to cheat or look up things online for a game? I usually like to discover things for myself, but getting a bit of help to minimize grinding or confusion really helps me keep things moving.

Hyperlight Blossom

I’m at a bit of a crossroad deciding if I should purchase TLOU2. Identity inclusion is important to me, but not when it preaches down to the majority. I heard the 70% turnaround in staff at ND can largely be attributed to plot disputes, most notably a homophobic christian cult as the main villain. I’m not religious myself, but all the christians I know in my life are very modern & welcoming. I can’t imagine any of them being comfortable working on a story that portrays their beliefs in such a regressive light. Again I was looking forward to speaking w/ my wallet on something meaningful to me, but I don’t understand why Druckmann and co. insist on propping one group up at the expense of another. This is on top of all the other drama ND has found themselves in recently. I just want to play a good game. Hope everyone is getting better, -Hyperlight Blossom

The other day my wife was watching me play Animal Crossing. I showed off my character and how I made him look similar to me with sneakers, a checkered shirt, and jeans. She said to me, “But…you have free rein to make him look however you want. Why not go nuts with it?” This made me wonder, when you’re making your own character in games do you tend to model them after yourself or be as creative as you can be Also, on a side note, just wanted to wish my fellow teachers out there a Happy Teacher Appreciation Week! The challenges of turning lessons digital with YouTube and Zoom has been tough at times, but we’re making it work!

Fred Dinovo

Howdy all, What is a game/series you have been hyped for, but never ended up playing? For me it is Assassin's Creed for the past two entries Origins/Odyssey I wanted to hop on but by the time the games come up I always end up passing.

Grizzled Gaming

Hey cohorts! I’m married, have two kids, a full time job, and limited game playing time. I plan on starting Thursday night, the day that it comes to Xbox Gamepass. Between myself & JeffM, who finishes Red Dead Redemption 2 first?

william hittle

Hey Ben and the CLCs. I'm still catching up on old podcasts (up to March 19th and the newly relaunched site stuff -- it's interesting to hear comments like "I dunno, guys, this coronavirus thing may be more serious than we think"). Concerning summer gaming reveals, do y'all have a sense for how this pandemic is affecting video game companies? Maybe it's something you've addressed already, and I just need to catch up. But my fiancee said that video game companies must be making bank because everyone's turning to indoor hobbies, and I didn't think that was true. I've heard that movies have mostly shut down productions, even for those with CGI, because companies won't let copyrighted images be worked on remotely for fear of piracy. Has the game designing process been significantly rocked or just mildly upset? And are we seeing that with release date changes?

printcrowd print

This is in no way aimed at minn max I enjoy every show. But my question is to what extent do you think video game reviews or podcast discussions are fudged by slacking reviewers. By such I mean reviewers who havent played the game or have played barely past the first level or induction. I ask because being a heavy gamer I listen to alot of different podcasts and reviews and find myself chuckling when sometimes I could swear by the response or review the person probably has done just that

Dante B

Hey CLC's! First time long time! What gaming magazine's did you grow up with and love the most? Do you miss the print medium? To me there's something about the 24 hour news cycle that breaks some of the anticipation and excitement that came with breaking open that new EGM, Nintendo Power, OPM or Game Informer. Thanks I'll hang up and listen.

Grant Campbell

Dear CLCs, do y'all have trouble finishing new games? If I've finished a game I can run back through it without any problem, but it's hard to motivate myself to see new releases through to the end. How do you all go about finishing big, daunting new games?

May McKernan

Hey CLC’s, has working from home changed your perspective on the 15k remote office goal? Are there some specific quality of life improvements about the office environment at GI that you’d hope to rekindle at an eventual Minnmax office? Love the content, thanks!

Shawn Mills

I owned and played through Survivor: The Interactive Game which you brought up on last weeks podcast. I wanted to confirm it is an absolutely terrible game that the developers refused to even put their names on. I don't remember much of it but I remember it had the cast from the Australia season and featured scenes from the show. The challenges were a bunch of terrible mini games and in between you could do work around the camp and talk to other contestants but it didn't seem to actually have any affect on how people would vote. I've really enjoyed Winners at War and I wish someone would make a game based off of it since it has so many fan favorite cast members.

Riley Autumn Logue

Hey Ben and crew! In anticipation of the last of us part 2 being released about a month from now, I've decided to replay the original. The last time I played the game was 6 or 7 years ago, so I'm a bit foggy on some of the details of the journey, however, I can still clearly remember the ending. (Potential spoilers ahead but the game has been out for almost a decade, so I think the statute of limitations may have passed on this one). I remember clearly siding with Joel when I first played the game. I understood his motivations and even sided with him, even though by doing what he did, he basically doomed all of humanity. Well, after 7 years of personal growth and with the state of the world as it is right now, I'm absolutely appalled by Joel's actions toward the end of the game. I realize now that if somebody that I loved was somehow able to save humanity from assured destruction, and they chose to do so, while it would hurt to lose them, they would at least have died for a great cause and they could be remembered with reverence and respect. I did a total 180. My question to you is, has any event in the real world, be it in your personal life or just in general, changed your perspective on a game? Thanks! Gabriel Logue

Connor

Hey MinnMax gang, About 8 years too late, I finally played through Journey for the first time today. Even knowing how the online features worked, I was surprised to find myself getting pretty emotional as I went through the game with another player. They clearly had played before, and were very patient with me as I kept falling off of things and getting blown away by wind. They always waited for me, and then would show me secrets that I otherwise would have missed. It was such a beautiful gaming experience to be paired with someone completely random, only be able to use little nonsensical chirps to communicate, and yet somehow have a fulfilling and meaningful connection with that player. My question for you all is, what are some of your most memorable/unique multiplayer moments in gaming? Thanks! Connor

Juan Cabrera

Wubaluba dub dub Minnmax! Regarding the Great GOTY Hunt, I saw you take feedback during the most recent twitch stream and was curious as to whether you've decided which approach to take if games do, in fact, start getting delayed, i.e. polling beloved titles or previous runner ups. Love the content!

Greetings Benny and the Gaming Vets, In last week's episode, when discussing favorite opening lines from games, Kyle and Ben debated whether the first line of Chrono Trigger was actually "Wake up, Crono!" or if that was a simplified version that people remembered incorrectly, including potentially on Andrew Reiner's shirt. INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE FIRST LINE OF CHRONO TRIGGER: The original opening line is famous and succinct, but is not exactly "Wake up, Crono," but rather it is "Crono . . . Crono! Good morning, Crono!" It is such a popular line that when they were advertising for the 2008 DS re-release, they made a marketing campaign around "Good morning, Crono!" (which is probably where Reiner's shirt came from?) (www.goodmorningcrono.com still re-directs to Square Enix's website.) But the funny thing is that they did NOT tell the person who re-translated the DS version about that ad campaign, and he had actually already changed the first line to "Crono . . . Crono! Crono, are you still sleeping?" So in summary there are two versions of the line, neither of which is "Wake up, Crono!" and the version of the game that had the advertising campaign "Good morning, Crono!" did not have that line in it at all.

Hello MinnMax! What’s the grindiest thing you’ve ever done in a video game? Was it worth it?

Brandon Milligan

Hey, Minnimum Maximoniums, There's a mod for Half Life 2 that allows the story mode to be played with upwards of 16 players that reinvigorates a campaign I've played a crazy amount already. If you could add multiplayer to any single player campaign, what game would it be? Brandon

Tyler Carver

Hello all, What do you guys think about that Amazon games studio announcement of Crucible? What kind of games do you think we will see them release in the future? Regards, Tyler

Hey Ben and the CLCs, The Deepest Dive on the FF7R is coming to a close and I really enjoy the passionate discussion shared about a series you enjoy. I’m looking forward to the next Deepest Dive...so, what is it?

Andrew Sanford

Hello Minnmax Crew, and Jill! I have one simple, nostalgic question for you all.. what's the first video game you can remember playing? May your days be long and ridiculous, Drew

Milk Bradley

A Milk Bradley Howdy from Madison Wisconsin Minnnnnnnnn Maxers (9 n-s)! Have any of you watched that Mythic Quest show on Apple TV with Rob McElhenney? What do you think? I work at small mobile game company and some of the natural conflicts they display between game dev roles are accurate and they cover ridiculous things that really happen when you are handling a live game. (Nazi groups on the server, etc.) Aside from that I think it's funny and well crafted and can't wait for season 2.

FlaminQueso

Hey Howdy Hey Hanson and the 'horts, Do you guys feel that video game protagonist have a diversification problem or do you feel it is getting a lot better? Personally, I think its slowly getting more diverse, but strong american white male protagonists are still everywhere! Not only that, but these characters even all sound the same. Quick quiz, which of these protagonists were voiced by Nolan North? I put clips of the game on each one too. 1) Alex - COD: MW - https://youtu.be/WggmaYGFuEY?t=43 2) JD - Gears of War 4 and Gears 5 https://youtu.be/ER3VhU8DNzI?t=9 3) Captain Martin Walker - Spec Ops: The Line https://youtu.be/x07hBBy-uBg?t=417 4) Kyle Crane - Dying Light https://youtu.be/nXLpD2OJLo8?t=420 If you listen to all of these guys, they ALL sound exactly the same. They are all separate voice actors too. The popularity of games like Uncharted have led game developers to strive for this in some weird way. The answer is 3 by the way. What do y'all think, has it gotten better? Will the strong white male protagonist trope soon be a thing of the past? Thanks, Queso

Scott Castro

Hey Ben and CLCs, Let's say you put a substantial amount of time into a long game, like The Witcher 3, but you don't finish it. You put it down for a few months to play some new games, but then you get the urge to come back to the Witcher. Do you a start a new game, or do you pick up where you left off? Does your approach change if you have put it down for more than a year? Does your approach change if you were halfway through the game vs. about 75% through the game? Stay healthy!

Cody U.

Hope it’s not too late to comment but I was listening to the FFVII Deepest Dive and Ben said he recognized the coin move Rufus was using. Just wanted to say you could be thinking of Erron Black’s Fatality from Mortal Kombat 11 which he also deflects his bullets off a coin into the opposing player.

Rigglz

Hi Ben and Cloud Loving Cohorts, I am currently listening to your FFVIIR Deepest Dive and one thing came to mind. When Kyle and the crew kept bring up the issue with switching materia were you all using the swap with whole party screen. When you enter the equipment and materia menu you can pres r1 to bring up everyone's currently equipped materia and you can press triangle to select a materia from one person and move over to another slot to quickly change over. I don't think it is something particularly clear, but it made my life so much easier especially in hard mode where I would need to switch things around more often. Thanks for the great content!

Thom Blackburn

Hi Bens, What kind of car does everyone drive? Thanks, Thom

Jonathan Dinh

Hey Ben and the CLC's, With Gears Tactics having a positive reaction thus far, I thought about having other series take a dive into a wildly different genre. What if Civilization turned into a base-building/musou style game as you progress through history? Or take a Platinum style game and slow it down to being a turn-based/menu-based combat experience. What game series would you like to see try a different genre? I have a game for you guys. I will list two to three tracks from the soundtrack. You will guess the game. Ben, you can add the composer too if that will help. 1. The Girl in the Tower; Doors; Will the Circle Be Unbroken; Gary Schyman 2. Blue Fields; Roses and Wine; Timber Owls; Nobuo Uematsu 3. A Yearning for the Sky; Kwolok's Hollow; Shriek; Gareth Coker 4. Get Use to It; Mine, Windbag, Mine; Build That Wall; Darren Korb 5. Bustin' Chops; The Gates of Shambhala; A Rock and a Hard Place; Greg Edmonson Answers: Bioshock Infinite, Final Fantasy VIII, Ori and the Will of the Wisps, Bastion, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves

Brent Woodroof

Do you think they'll ever start remaking the old Assassin's Creed games in the style of Odyssey and Origins? Would you play them?

Josh LaBaw

I might be to late with this one but here is my Question. I'm locked down with just me and my pregnant wife. JeffM had a great board game session last week but I was not totally sure if they were all 2 Player fun or if they required more players. What are the 2 Player Board Games we should be playing now? Keep in mind no Monopoly, as that can only be enjoyed drunk. I'd rather play games we both can enjoy it.
