Favorite cheesiest line in this section so far, ‘Bowser and his band wrote the book on “bad”’. As said from the toad that gives you a star upon talking to him on the basement floor.

Hey Cohorts! Just wanted to bring to all of your attention the Green Demon Challenge! Best is to check out this link but the main theory is to collect all the red coins in a level while being chased by a 1up mushroom that is faster then mario and chases you relentlessly! Its in the shifting sand land and also in a few other levels, in case ya know you wanted to make this game a little tougher! Also metal mario theme is the best in the game!!!! From Jay your resident Canadian! https://vgchallenge.fandom.com/wiki/Green_Demon_Challenge

If you get too far away from Bowser this time he charges right at you. This scared the s*** out of me when I was a kid! One quality of life change I thought they’d make was the draw distance on coins. Can be frustrating for the 100 coin challenges. Is the Switch not powerful enough to handle it!? /s Also: Obligatory story of how Miyamoto used that rabbit to perfect the movement of Mario.

Did you guys notice there are a lot of fully developed worlds-within-worlds in this section? The two I'm thinking of specifically are in Dry, Dry Desert (the pyramid) and in Lethal Lava Land (the volcano). Do you think these were intended to be full unique levels and were rolled together, or was Nintendo just being ambitious?

whitemex

The biggest enemy in this game are slopes

SuperSeriousSam

Is it just me or is getting the star after defeating Big Boo on the balcony really difficult? The camera is fixed pretty far away and it's way too easy to slide down off the roof, then you have to make your way through the mansion again. It took me several tries. Also, why are the tips framed and hung?

Matthew Wogksch

Love this game, but seriously, screw shifting sands land. Getting 100 coins on that level suuucked. The camera really shows its flaws on that level, and the all the slopes that lead to instant death is the worst. Matt Wogksch

Ok so after not being able to comment last week I have a few things I noticed after listening. I did things SUPER out of order. I collected the metal hat and the phase hat before the wing hat which made things very confusing. There were so many stars I was very lost on collecting and confused with the process. One thing I also noticed is that navigating throughout the castle gets easier but getting stuck on the f*#king fire level cause I didn’t pay attention. But all in all a very frustrating and fun experience

Nick M

I've played through Super Mario 64 many times before but only just noticed something for the first time in this particular playthrough. If you try to complete the red coin star in Dire Dire Docks BEFORE you have beaten Bowser in the Fire Sea, the moving poles you use to get between floating platforms are missing. This is because the submarine is only removed from the level after defeating Bowser, at which point the poles are added to the level, allowing you to complete that star. I guess in past playthroughs I had always beaten Bowser first and never noticed... weird stuff!

Michael Nelson

Forget Tony Hawk! Shell surfing in Lethal Lava Land has always been my favorite part of Mario 64. Anyone else bummed we never got a Mario themed extreme sports game??

Sincerly, Eric

It took me ten cussing tries to unlock the Pyramid for the Sand Course Boss Fight. Those Pillars are so cussing cuss cuss. After FINALLY getting all Four without drowning in the Sand or some other unworthy Death. I finally unlock the top of the Pyramid. I rush over feeling relief and as though God looked down and said Cuss You In Particular. I accidentally touched the Shadow of the star at the top of the Pyramid and the game registered it as me collecting it..... It took me out of the Course....

Jeorin

The rabbit in the basement has dialogue suggesting he is a reference to Alice in Wonderland. When you first catch him he says: "Yeeoww! Unhand me, brute! I'm late, so late, I must make haste! This shiny thing? Mine! It's mine. Finders, keepers, losers... Late, late, late... Ouch! Take it then! A gift from Bowser, it was. Now let me be! I have a date! I cannot be late for tea!". The rabbit in Wonderland was of course notable for constantly saying he was late for a very important date. On a side note, the final star count for this section is 72. How did you all do this time?

Tim Mahoney

There were definitely a few times where I swore out loud during this section. The most prominent being going for the 100-coin run on Shifting Sand Land. I thought I had collected enough coins outside to finish the job inside the pyramid, and after collecting every single coin in the pyramid I ended up with 99 coins... motherf'er!

Jordan Shaffer

The ground inside the volcano looks 100% identical to a bunch of Reece's Pieces.

Nick from Atlanta

I didn't super enjoy this section (which may not bode well for the last chunk), but I'm struck by how similar some of these levels are. All four have major hazard/instant kills. 3/4 (LLL, SSL, DDD) are contained in two rooms. SSL is the only one with a cannon, and LLL is the only one to use the Shell. Weird! Nick from Atlanta

Mack Dack

I love the tone of Lethal Lava Land. The music is very odd and strange, the level itself isn’t very vertical and instead relies on the player to journey around a wide landscape of lava...very cool! The enemies are odd too and seem very specific to this level. Do the bullies appear in any other Mario game? Dropping down into the volcano to reveal a vertical platforming section is still a cool experience even now!

kittyssassin

Are there many people playing the DS version? I did the first part of Deepest Dive on All-Stars, but the controls got to be too much for me in the basement levels. The DS version gives you Yoshi and Luigi, whose moves are a little bit more forgiving in these levels. Yoshi can get a little more distance with his flutter jump, and Luigi’s jump is just a tad more floaty (which was a godsend when navigating Lethal Lava Land in particular).

Mack Dack

Jumping through the wall instead of a painting to get to the sand world is badass. Had you not had Nintendo Power, a guide or talked to your friends at school about finding this level I’m not 100% sure how you would find it.

Erik Angel

I died so many times on the desert level. I think it's probably my least favorite level in the game so far. Instant death pits are not fun and the outside part of level doesn't even really have much going on besides that. The inside of the pyramid was much more enjoyable if not amazing.

BBK

During the first section, I was legitimately confused by how ridiculously easy the Bowser fight was. I literally just ran up to him, grabbed him, and threw him and it was over. It probably took less than 10 seconds. Now, after this second Bowser fight, I realize that I'm pretty sure I just got insanely lucky during the first fight, as the same mechanics during the second fight gave me much more trouble. I did not realize there was any aiming involved during the first fight. Took me a solid 8+ throws this time before I successfully threw him towards a bomb! So long Gay Bowser!

IanTClark

What’s the deal with the bunny running around in the basement? I swear I’ve gotten close enough to catch him. Is he just trolling us?

Joshua Caleb

Ok. I have made a rather startling discovery in the DS port of Mario 64: Not only does Mario NOT say "So long Gay Bowser!" (he says either "Buh-bye!" or "Here we Gooooo!") but he ALSO DOESNT TALK WHILE SLEEPING! This port is dead to me now.

MickManga

It's a really silly detail, but I love all the sleeping lines they recorded for Mario 64. It's a trend I'm glad to see that it continues to this day in Mario games.

Tim Lorow

There is something so satisfying about those rotating block guys in the desert level. Lining up perfectly with the hole makes up for all the times you get crushed by the edge.

Edern

I totally forgot the design of Scuttlebug in Mario 64, the spider-like ennemies in Boo’s Balcony😵!! They are horrifying and didn’t match the game’s art direction. This level is so dark, I’ll have some nightmares tonight 😱

Jaketrix

Does anyone still feel bad about ground pounding on Dorrie's back in Hazy Maze Cave? Also, approaching Dorrie for the first time as a child back in 1996 was terrifying.

Joshua Caleb

On a more serious note, are the Bullies in Lethal Lava Land the absolute WORST enemies in a Mario game? I don't know how you effectively deal with them. They're fast, they stun AND knock you back on the precious small platforms and it's super easy to just get stun-locked by them until you fall into the lava and bounce around until you die. Ground pounding them is the only way I can find to kill them and even that's inaccurate at best.

Ian Clark

Which star has been the most time-consuming or challenging for you to collect? For me it was the 100-Coin Star in Hazy Maze Cave. I didn't collect the blue coins from the switch in time, and -- because I stubbornly refused to reset -- I had to resort to picking off every bat in the level to get all my coins. (Including from one that floated obnoxiously low above a big bottomless pit!) Took awhile, but it was fun challenge to wring that cave dry! P.S., according to a sign, they call that big pit the Black Hole. Neat! Wait, who wrote that sign? What mysterious industrialists built these crazy caves?! Is it real? Is it a dream? Am *I* a dream!??

Matthew Paxton

I appreciate the variety Nintendo packed into Shifting Sand Land. Between all of the obstacles and different types of sandy terrain, SSL has a variety of star challenges, and creates a noticeable increase in difficulty. I never appreciated it in the past, but now I think SSL is one of the greatest levels in Super Mario 64.

Christopher Reardon

That hidden wall to get to Shifting Sands blew my mind as a kid, and it even kind of caught me off guard as an adult. Do you think Nintendo put that rabbit chase in that section to increase the chance that you'd hit the wall by accident?

James Martin

Normally when you complete a star challenge the star appears basically right by you (other than the red coin stars). But every once in a while, a star will be placed in an elusive spot even after you think you've got it! Example: Boo's Balcony in the haunted house - you kill Boo and the star is on the roof! Took forever to get it. Anyone got a 'most frustrating star to get AFTER you find it' choice?

Avo_Cadeo

The biggest thing that stopped me from truly enjoying Super Mario 64 growing up was the N64 controller. Trying to make jumps or turns with that thing destroyed my thumb, and it never felt precise enough to warrant what it wanted of me. For the first time, I've been able to get all the stars in every level up to this point without having an indentation in my thumb. Playing with a Pro Controller is easily the single biggest upgrade of this collection.

Zach E

I surprisingly enjoyed the second bowser level, mostly because I didn't die once (cool brag). The lava gives Mario a second chance if you fall off, and there was enough coins/health around. Also, collecting the red coins was a reasonable challenge

Shawn Mills

Klepto, the bird in shifting sands is one of the most iconic enemies from mario 64 due to his ability to humiliate you by stealing your hat. Mario just isn't Mario without his hat! Where do you think he ranks among Mario 64 enemies?

spelldragon

64DS on Wii U still. Wow, Hazy Maze Cave is huge, and not in a good way. Odd thing, everytime I do the toxic Maze star I'm always determined to enter through the exit. That hill and the fencing are basically challenging me. I don't think I've ever used the actual entrance. Are you guys breaking the game at all?

Ferruccio Cinquemani

I got to the end yesterday with around 75 stars and I think I'm fine. I 100%ed it on N64 but today I feel going for 120 stars is a bit masochistic.

AnotherRobot

While I was bewildered that Nintendo didn’t give this game a full remake, I’m glad they didn’t. Any modernizations would ostensibly strip Mario 64 of its iconic look and feel. That being said, the camera was a difficult adjustment. However, during this undoubtedly weaker portion of the game, I became far more comfortable with the camera’s controls. It’s literally like controlling another character. Is the camera becoming easier to control for the rest of you, or are you still fighting it as much as you did in the beginning?

Matthew Weatherley

Please tell me that we are all re entering paintings the correct way. The fact that a back flip get you back into a painting after winning a star always puts a smile on my face. If your not doing a back flip your doing it wrong.

Rich McLaughlin

Mario has a low-poly model used when the camera is far away. Back on a CRT it wasn't noticeable, but now you can clearly see it popping in and out. It's more comical than anything, but still...

henrik mortensen

I just noticed this after all these years! Did you know that you can kill flying enemies by jumping under them?! I have killed those pesky gasmask shyguys in the Hazy Maze Cave by doing that. It is so much easier! I guess there is a reason why Mario has his fist up when jumping other than hitting ? blocks.

Aegis of the Grail

Can we agree that shifting sand land is the most frustrating level in the whole game? Instakill areas are everywhere and it makes moving around the world incredibly difficult and punishing

Aegis of the Grail

Also, the only reason I knew you could run up the sides of those red pillars in shifting sand land was because a friend told me. Was there some hint I missed or is this just something the game hopes you figure out?

Mike Po

What in the blazes is going on in this castle's basement? The levels off the main entrance are a bay, a battlefield, a fortress and a snowy mountain. The basement houses a desert with an ancient curse locked away in it, a lava maze, a creepy mine with poison gas, and a submarine station. The shift in difficulty and level tone in this second portion of the game is more drastic than I remembered from my childhood.

Joemomma

I was surprised with the checkpointing in the volcano in Lethal Lava Land. I died (totally not my fault, I'm amazing) and was expecting to have to make my way back to the volcano. I was pleasantly surprised when I was dropped into the volcano. I believe this checkpointing is also in the desert stage as well, in the pyramid.

Ben Fitter

As much as I love the world design in this game, I think the basement levels have some of the weakest examples of it. Both Shifting Sand Land and Lethal Lava Land don't really feel like realized worlds. They're both big flat squares that kind of just end abruptly and fade out into nothingness. The only thing that saves them for me is being able to explore inside the pyramid and volcano, respectively. Hazy Maze Cave is probably the best level of this section in this regard, with work elevators, directories on the wall, and an underground lake that feeds to the waterfall outside the castle. I looove that sort of stuff.

An inanimate freaking object

I believe shifting sand land is the first level in the game where you can lose your hat? It's always quite disapointing going into an old mario 64 save to discover that old you never bothered to get the hat back, and now you have no memory of where it is.

tbeeks15

Hey cohorts! Alright, the game is starting to pick up in difficulty in some fun and not so fun ways (the not so fun ways specifically being shifting sand land, I hate that dark quicksand stuff!) With my lives slowly dwindling down, I thought about the tricks in other mario games to stockpile lives real quick. The koopa shell on the stairs in the original and the koopa shell in the small cave in 3D world specifically. Are there any well-known cheeses to easily stockpile up on lives in this game or have you found any easy strats yourself to do this? Let’s-a-go! -Beeks from Grand Rapids, MI

Ryan Foshee

Here’s a simple one for you all: what was your favorite level in this segment of the game and why?

BIG!!!!HERB!!!!!!

Something new I just discovered in this game: if you grab the monkey in Tall Tall Mountain he grabs your hat and if you grab him again he gives it back. Maybe that's a well known thing but this is the first time I've experienced this

betoq92 .

Im going for the 120 star run and im really enjoying my time, but the tick tock clock and rainbow ride suck. The camera and controls had me falling off the stage at 99 coins more than once. seriously eff these levels.
