There was a lot of shade thrown on the basement section last episode, but I personally feel the levels get less fun the further the game goes on. I enjoy the odd mixture of secrets in Wet-Dry World and Tiny-Huge Island is a fun idea, but I'll take Hazy Maze Cave over that giant snowman and gimmicky clock and stupid monkey and slow magic carpet any day!

I’ve heard a lot of talk on the much-loved “So Long-eh Bowser” phrase being removed. This is because the version of SM64 in 3D All Stars is based on the Japanese update release “Shindou Pak” edition, which primarily sought to add rumble support, but also fixed some glitches and changed some voice lines

Nick M

I expect to be the only person saying this in these comments, but now that we've reached the end, I feel reassured in saying Super Mario 64 remains my favorite game of all time. I can't disagree with many of the criticisms I've heard so far, and I know other Mario games have passed it in terms of controls (camera included), but for me you just can't beat the drive to 120 and the intrigue surrounding each star. I just don't think any game will ever bring me more joy than this one has since day one. PS: I don't think we've done a sufficient job of grilling Dan for his assessment of which Mario games are "mainline" Mario games

Hey guys, I'm playing Mario 64 ana DS and I have to say I think I prefer the Diaz version of the game. I originally played on the 64, so its been fun to revisit the game with more characters. However, sometimes I jump into a world "knowing" how to get a certain star, but I can't because I need a different character to access it. Its cool how Nintendo added all this stuff to a rerelease of the game, and sad that you can't play this version on the Switch. Anyway here are some fun facts I found to celebrate the superior Diaz version: --Super Mario 64 DS is originally called as Super Mario 64x4 --The developers originally planned to use together all 4 playable characters when fighting Bowser in the final battle. --They redesigned some of the enemies in the game. The Chill Bully boss from Snowman's Land was just a blue looking ball, but ana diaz he has a mustache. Thanks for replaying this game it's been more fun than expected. Keep at it, you can do it!!!!!

Not being able to backflip into Tall, Tall Mountain after successfully completing a star is complete malarkey. This alone makes it the worst level of this 3rd of the game. No debate necessary

Something I completely forgot about in the DS vers of Mario 64, is the new power-ups; in a few of the levels there's a couple brand new, unique power-ups. Yoshi can get a fire breathing power-up and Mario can get a Giant Mushroom power-up that lets him stomp around the course crushing enemies to earn 1-ups, as well as a "balloon power-up" that literally inflates Mario like a balloon so he can slowly float through the air......this crazy Kong just digs this tune....

Hi Ben and the Waluigis. After hearing you all rag on the basement levels last week and calling them the worst of the game i was shocked. All my life i those have always been my favorites. Especially Hazy Maze Cave. I just loved exploring every nook and cranny of that level as a kid. And after playing the 3rd floor levels again i really can't understand anyone who says the basement is the worst. Tick Tock Clock is bad enough, but Rainbow Ride is unplayable. Even as a kid i always skipped that level. It's so boring. One mistake and you have to take that entire friggin carped ride all over again. It's the WORST! Other than that this was still a fun game and a really great deepest dive.

How about that mirror room? So awesome. Now that I know more about games I understand reflections weren’t really a thing back then. The mirror room is actually a separate room built out with a second Mario and lakitu you are also controlling. To confirm this you can get mirror Mario to pop out of existence like many other game objects by getting him to the edge of the cameras vision. In addition you can see him turn to low res Mario when running just the right distance. I wanted to try and use the randomness of physics to get the two Mario’s out of sync but couldn’t do it. That’s probably why the room has those weird square pillars.

AnotherRobot

Did you go into each level with a Star acquisition strategy, and did it change throughout your playthrough? My initial strat was first to attempt the 100-coin stars, then whatever star I selected. However, near the end, I would grab the first star I came across.

Joshua Duperoy

As someone who’s played and completed this game multiple times I completely forgot how it ended. I was taken aback from the creepy voice acting from princess peach and what was up with that weird ass photo at the end that looked like macabre miniature versions of Mario and peach just chilling on a cake. The screen just sits there and waits until you do the whole Nintendo reset thing. Anyways, as always thanks Ben and crew for another fantastic deep dive.

Tim Lorow

Since it hasn’t come up yet, I wanted to mention the most unnecessary addition to the DS version... the mini games. You can unlock mini games by grabbing the newly added rabbits around the castle. Then you can play them from the main menu. Most them are garbage to put it lightly, though some of the twitchy Mario levels aren’t bad. The worst are the Luigi card games that manage to be un-winnable, un-losable, and un-interesting... leading to an eternal purgatory only Luigi can provide.

Mark Garcia

While this is one of my favorite games of all time, can we talk about how annoying it is that you can't retain all the lives that you've accumulated if you save, quit, and then pick the game back up later? It's especially annoying as they are much needed in some of these later levels. Also, thanks Yoshi for giving me 100 lives after I have 100%'ed the game. I am totally going to use them -_-

Zach Gileau

Has running on a rolling log in a video game ever been fun? I've lost count of the amount of times I've fallen into the infinite void on Tall Tall Mountain because the nearby shy guy set me on fire or I ended up hitting some inexplicable invisible wall! Even when I pull it off I don't feel any sense of satisfaction. I'm just glad it's over.

Kyle Silva

Can we talk about how much of a pain wall jumping is? It works alot like Super Metroid where you have to point the direction you want to jump at and then jump. I don't get it! I spent such a long time wall-jumping out of one of the areas in Wet-Dry World. Wall-Jumping would later be such a neat and fund control option in the New Super Mario Bros. games, but I'd rather avoid it for all of Super Mario 64

betoq92 .

(Sorry commented on the old post) Im going for the 120 star run and im really enjoying my time, but the tick tock clock and rainbow ride suck. The camera and controls had me falling off the stage at 99 coins more than once. seriously eff these levels.

JakeTwitchin

How is no one talking about the endless staircase!? I remember being a kid and that tiny little mechanic absolutely blowing my mind... little touches of Bowser’s trickery inside the castle are a highlight of the overworld for me- from the transforming painting to the endless staircase, those little “mess with you moments” always hit just right back in the day

Nick!!

The final Bowser fight- my god. I was not having fun at first but this game grew on me the more I played it. And I appreciate how you can get ANY 60 stars to reach the final fight. But spinning this monstrosity around, I never managed to aim him into the bombs. I whiffed so many times it was obscene! Hearing Mario go “buy bye!” only to have him fling Bowser into the ether was so infuriating. Who else had a hard time aiming this idiot?

Kyle Silva

I've been playing Super Mario Bros. 35 and it made me think about how most of the original enemies of Super Mario Bros. made the conversion from 2D to 3D with the exception of 4 of them. Koopa Paratroopa, Blooper, Hammer Bro and Buzzy Beetle. Blooper and Hammer Bro. would eventually get their apology in the form of being the only new playable characters in Mario Party 8, while Paratroopas have been invited to Mario Tennis and Mario Kart, but Buzzy Beetles are still treated with disrespect, having not appeared in any of the 3D Mario games to this day. Bonus Question: Which of the 4 unseen SMB enemies would you have wanted to have seen in Super Mario 64?

Ryan

Jumping into the top of the clock when the time strikes midnight, or is it noon, and seeing all the gears stop was really cool. Probably my favorite thing in the game. Are there any other changes when jumping in at specific times? Does Mario watch Conan when he jumps in at 11pm, central time?

BBK

In Tiny Huge Island, during the Wriggler boss fight (for the Make Wriggler Squirm star), Wriggler tells Mario, "Now you're asking for it, linguine breath!" What a prick!

Tanner Methven

More than any other, this section of the game makes me appreciate the castle hub, and I’m still floored they were able to make it work so well as their first major 3D space. It’s not perfect, but the idea of changing how a level works by the way you enter it is a master stroke in my opinion. Also, though the hundred coin stars for Tiny Huge Island and Tick Tock Clock gave it a run for its money, I think it’s fair to say the Five Secrets in the Pyramid in Shifting Sand Land is the worst star in the game.

Rigglz

I started late for the deepest dive, but I noticed one touch that I haven’t heard brought up. When you talk to Toads, there is a little melody that plays and the same one is used in Luigi’s Mansion when talking to Toads as well. I thought it was a nice reference that I would not have noticed unless playing through Mario64. Thanks team! Roche! Roche! Roche!

Sandshrewd

I feel someone has to stand up for Banjo Kazooie. It has more unique and fun levels, a colorful and funny cast, Grant Kirkhope’s magnum opus soundtrack, and a better camera system that doesn’t screw you over. At no point playing Banjo did I ever feel like it was a slog. It’s fun from start to finish, yes, even the trivia game. The only thing I feel Mario has on it is Mario’s move set allows for more creative ways to traverse levels (just look at what the speedrunners can do). Taking out the importance of Super Mario 64 to the gaming industry, is it really such a cut and dry argument that Mario 64 is the better game/platformer? What am I missing here deepest divers?

Mack Dack

The final Bowser fight made me feel like I can’t play video games. I consistently missed on that final throw. It felt oddly fun to miss that last shot against Bowser though in a way. it made the whole final fight bigger and harder than it probably was.

Erik Angel

Don't get me wrong the music in this game is fantastic but too many end levels reuse earlier music and it's made worse when I'm hearing the same song after dying in Tick Tock Clock and Rainbow Ride over and over This was my first time playing the game and I definitely didn't love it as much as the rest of the gaming community however it was still good and crazy to imagine what they pulled off in 1996. All in all I'm glad I played it

Dru Marcus

On the 7th episode of the MinnMax show (at the 3:18:21 mark), Henrick Jacobson wrote in asking which Mario 64 level would you choose to live in if you had to pick one. Hanson, your answer was Wet Dry World. Would you still choose that level now that you revisited all the levels? What levels would you each choose now?

Bob Buel

So I went for 120 stars on this run. And my last 2 stars were both in the last room - get the 8 red coins on the cloud-hopping wing cap course and get 100 coins on Rainbow Ride. These two nearly broke me. Rainbow Ride requires you to go out of your way, backtrack and still keep your floating carpet along for the ride to get 100 coins. I thought it was the most frustrating individual star in the game...until I got to the cloud hopping level. A combination of a bad camera, inconsistent flying controls, seemingly random speed ups and momentum losses mid flight, and draw distance that made it so you couldnt even see all the coins you needed to get until you were on top of them, made that level a nightmare for me. On top of all that, when you lose the level, it kicks you out to the lake outside of the castle. And you have to run through the castle and climb several flights of stairs just to try it again! Yikes. But I'm proud to say I got them both (eventually) and got 120 stars for the first time.

Jeorin

So I spotted something odd in the room with all the mirrors. When you are far enough away from the mirror, the reflection of Mario will change to the low poly model even though regular Mario looks normal. This means that they did not use a true reflection effect, but instead made separate models inside the mirror that respond to your controls to simulate a mirror effect. This is also only the second time in the game where we can view Lakitu, and I'm betting that people who hacked the game discovered that his model is only present in the mirror and not actually following you around.

Shakenbake67

Hi MinnMaxers, once again loving the game club and all the content you guys bring. My one question is simple, why is Tiny Huge Island the worst level in Mario history. In all seriousness, that level was no fun, the amount of times I accidentally fell to my death due to the level not being scaled correctly to my huge Mario. So many times a goomba I could not see would push my Mario to his death. Anyone else have the same frustrations with this level? P.S. Tall Tall Mountain is the best level in Mario 64. Love that fucking monkey

henrik mortensen

I find it odd that almost half of the worlds are not entered trough real individual paintings. Rainbow Ride is entered trough some random hole and Snowmans Land just has the same picture as Cool. Cool Mountain only that it is only visible via the mirror for some strange reason. PS: That credits music is one of the greatest compositions in music ever! Loooooove it!

RobBobWill

I simply can't let this Dive end without dragging Snowman's Land through the snow a bit. I don't think I ever got the first star without using the cannon to avoid that stupid breath. From the duplicated bully fight, to the non-respawning whirly creatures required to reach the shell, to the red coin crammed between the bully and lava-water, to even the laziest reuse of a level theme, this world truly has the worst to offer, IMO.

TL

I just have a simple question/comment...have you guys noticed the backgrounds of any of the levels? Beyond the playing area, most of the levels are just empty sky, but for a few, it’s more than that. For Wet Dry World, for example, the background makes it look like you’re in some sort of mountainside town, with other buildings or houses in the distance? What are your guys thoughts on the “settings” of these levels?

Joemomma

One question: Why are the water strider enemies so sad? I entered the painting at the bottom so the water level was low. I saw their sadness and aimed to please, raising the water level. This did not seem to raise their spirits. I weep for them.

My apologies, but unfortunately this is only the 2nd most thorough discussion of Super Mario 64 on the internet. The title actually belongs to this video, which is a 24 minute breakdown of how to complete the star "Watch for Rolling Rocks" using only 0.5 presses of the A button. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpk2tdsPh0A This is where such memes as "first, we have to talk about parallel universes" "scuttlebug transportation" and "an A-press is an A-press, you can't say its only half" come from. Seriously, if you haven't seen it before its a trip. 3.8 million views explaining game mechanics you've never heard of. Its my all time favorite video about any game, period.

Joe Dean

Dear Ben and Mario Monks, Can we talk about how boring the magic carpets are? Sure it's a cool set piece but the majority of the time you're on them you're just waiting for the stupid thing to arrive at your destination. The only times you take action is just to dodge various blocks or fire in the path. PS I don't think I'll ever beat Super Mario 64 again, unless I do the DS version. Does not hold up to memory. Thanks, Joe Dean

Shawn Mills

I always get scared by the fake coin enemies in Snowman's Land. I thought this was a fun innocent Mario game not Dark Souls.

betoq92 .

Quick question, do you guys long jump with the left trigger or right trigger?

Aegis of the Grail

As far as I could find, the only Mario 64 representation in Smash is the stage Rainbow Cruise, based on the Rainbow Ride course. Is there any course you guys would rather have seen in Smash as a stage?

Aegis of the Grail

In Rainbow Ride, when riding the carpet up to the cruise ship, the last obstacle placed in your way before you can go over to the ship is another long block similar to the ones seen before. However, this one is slanted instead of having a flat surface like the others. Why did this happen? Did any of you die to this several times like I did? Is there a good strategy to get past it or do you just have to hope your jump clears it so you don't start sliding on it?

Jaketrix

The final fight with Bowser was thrilling as a child and still holds up well after all these years (not sure why he was colored so weirdly though). The haunting pipe organ music combined with the battlefield collapsing around you makes for a memorable Bowser fight. Each Mario game kept ramping up the Bowser battles (until Super Mario Sunshine anyways - WHAT WERE THEY THINKING?!). That and I think the ending credits music is one if the best Mario tracks of all time. Maybe in my top ten!

Sincerly, Eric

Can we for another moment appreciate the opening area? I know when you lose all of your Lives in the darkness of a Bowser Battle or the long jumps for all the Coins. It is frustrating. It is rage inducing. And then..... bright colors. Soothing music. Green Trees and.... what's that? Butterfly's? Seriously how long have Butterflys been in that opening area? And how/why are they so calming. Forget the Stars! I'm chasing Butterflys!

Ian Clark

In this final chunk of the game, I thought the stages had some of the most conceptually interesting gimmicks and mechanics, even if the execution didn't always nail it. For instance I *really* love Tiny Huge Island and the ability it gives you to essentially swap the geometry's scale, and I wished they had done more with that concept. This got me thinking: are there any stages or stage concepts from this game that you'd love to see revisited with Odyssey-style production values?

Jared Natsis

A note about the Donkey Kong Country 3 comment from last time: The comment was framed as though DKC3 were "ripping off" the Mario 64 music, but it's pretty clear that it's a direct, sanctioned reference to another Nintendo product. Wrinkly is literally playing a Nintendo 64 and says, "I'm glad Cranky doesn't know about this new console. If he did, I'd never be able to get him off of it!" DKC3 came out in the Winter of '96, well after the release of the N64 and SM64, so the reference is clear as day. (Mario, Link, and Yoshi also have cameo appearances in DKC2.) One final note about DKC3--that game absolutely rules and is criminally underrated. :) Here's a screenshot of the scene in question: https://imgur.com/gpVN5Xo

Now that we're all the way through, I'm here with the MinnMax community ranking of all 15 worlds! 1. Bob-omb Battlefield 2. Whomp's Fortress 3. Wet-Dry World 4. Big Boo's Haunt 5. Cool, Cool Mountain 6. Tall, Tall Mountain 7. Lethal Lava Land 8. Jolly Roger Bay 9. Tick Tock Clock 10. Shifting Sand Land 11. Tiny-Huge Island 12. Snowman's Land 13. Dire, Dire Docks 14. Rainbow Ride 15. Hazy Maze Cave Some interesting notes: - The top 2 were in their own tier, way ahead of 3rd place - 4 of the top 5 were from the first section of the game - 9 different worlds received at least 1 first place vote - 8 different worlds received at least 1 last place vote - Every world was in someone's top 3 except Hazy Maze Cave - Tiny-Huge Island was the most polarizing, with multiple votes putting it in the top 3 and multiple also putting it dead last

My hot take after finishing M64: Mario’s long jump is the best move in the video game history and 90% of the pleasure I had replaying this game came from that freaking jump :) I now want to long jump in every other video game, even in real life ^^

t00thr0t

Regarding the cannon to shoot yourself up the castle: I have a super weird memory from back in the day before Mario 64 released. I remember getting a VHS at Toys R Us that basically was a Mario 64 promo. I watched that tape a ton and there was one part where they randomly showed a glitch?? You were able to make jumps outside the castle in a specific way that glitched you up the castle. I was trying (amateurishly) to copy that move for hours but was never able to.

tbeeks15

Hey cohorts! This may be unpopular, but I love the last two worlds of this game! I’ve always been more of a fan of the linear style 3D Mario games, so the more difficult, single path obstacle levels are really speaking to me much more than the openness of the earlier levels. The repeat climbs to the top of each level can get repetitive but I really feel like the challenging platforming was really engaging and for the most part fair. Not as many cheap, janky deaths as what I imagined. I was actually dreading this section earlier in the playthrough because I thought these levels were gonna age poorly and be too frustrating. So how did you guys fair with these levels? Am I crazy? Let’s-a-go! -Beeks from Grand Rapids, MI

Howdy My sister (who cannot beat me in basketball) stole my cartridge, so I haven't been able to keep up with the Deepest Dive. I just wanted to say playing through this really makes me want that remake we thought was coming. It still plays well, but I'd love something that's a little tighter with better camera control like Mario Odyssey. Thanks!

MickManga

One thing I love about Super Mario 64, is its length. It's just the right size to be easily be repayable. You can rack up stars quickly and yet most stars still manage to feel satsifying to get. It's been a blast to revisit a classic flaws and all. Hopefully this won't be the last Mario game to get a deep dive😆

Jesse L

Forget Dark Souls, this game is hard! I got the bare minimum 70 stars to fight Bowser in the Sky. It took me three hours to finally beat him, mostly due to sheer luck. I had no problem getting the first two hits by luring him near the edge, right next to a bomb and slowly throwing him into them, but trying to time the last throw was a nightmare. Late last night I was about to give up, but lucked out with one final throw with only a slice of health remaining and it finally hit. I swear I fought him 100 times. Anyone else struggle with this one?
