Hey everybody! We hope you've wrapped up Jak and Daxter for The Deepest Dive because now's the time to submit your thoughts on the game! Please don't spoil anything from future entries in the series in your comment though.

Submit one comment below and please get specific. Don't write a long review, please keep your one comment to around the length of a tweet. I repeat: please keep your one comment to around the length of a tweet. We want to get to as many comments as possible. Let's get specific, submit a comment about your favorite enemy design, NPC, line of dialogue from Daxter, animation, etc. The more specific you are, the higher the odds of us reading your comment during the discussion. We'll finish collecting comments on Wednesday evening.

We're recording The Deepest Dive on Jak and Daxter on Thursday at 1:30pm Central, and you can watch us record it live on MinnMax's Twitch channel. You can unlock the podcast version of the discussion in your favorite podcast app by supporting MinnMax at the $5 tier.

Thanks again to everybody who voted for The Deepest Dive on Jak and Daxter to happen, it's been a fun ride. Unfortunately, it's been too much of a wild ride for me (Ben Hanson) and so I'm tapping out and won't be on the final discussion. Even though I was hopped up on dramamine, something about the game made me way too nauseated while playing and I wasn't able to finish it. Janet Garcia is a saint and will be hosting the grand finale. Here's a note from my doctor to confirm that I'm not just being a baby.

Per the discussion last week about some of the moves like the upper cut being hidden , here are two little combos I've found and use for getting around the game faster. Launch after Headbutt/Ground slam: X, Square, X as hitting ground High jump after roll: R1, X, X as you land (plus the roll can damage enemies!) Also, I like how certain Precursor objects like the floating platforms have spring physics that let you jump higher if you time your button presses just right.

Boondock-Bandit

Hi gang, I’m pretty sure you can roll jump in Jak & Daxter (definitely can in the sequels), and that was my main travel-by-foot method. Did the Deepest Dive panel roll jump all day like me the whole game or were they boring? Thanks!

Shakenbake67

Weird Hanson, I go to the same doctor. Little weird that a Ottsel is a nurse but hey it’s cheap. Sucks that you couldn’t make it through the game but hopefully you will give Jak 2 a try! One thing that I wanted to point out is How uninspired volcanic crater is as a hub level. The levels that branch off of them are great but volcanic crater itself is so boring and dull compared to Rock Village and Sandover Village. What does the panel think?

I was five when the game originally came out and I still feel the same way about the spider cave today as I did then; it sucks. I always spend way too much time looking for one or two orbs that i somehow missed. The rest of the game is great but spider cave can drown in a pit of dark eco.

The "color-coded tiles dropping when you step on the first one" was a really fun mechanic and I wish more platformers ran with it. It added a planning layer on top of mere execution that I thought was a really fun crescendo.

A big draw I have to games of this era is how "knowable and completable" they feel. Very few modern AAA games give you a realistic opportunity to know the ends and outs of every inch of the world you're exploring. I really enjoyed my run through the game on my steam deck (decomped) and had an amazing time with this deep dive. Thanks! (ps if you can play it decompiled, it's a magic experience)

Lochlan Belford

Did anyone else know that the spiders in Spider Cave can be taken out in one hit by using an uppercut?? This is my 10th time playing this game and I never knew this! This whole time I had been taking them out with 3 spin kicks like a chump. Definitely makes Spider Cave a little less annoying now!

Luca Rescigno

I love how quick and breezy the boss fights are. Bosses have 3 hp and you also have 3 and there's always a checkpoint right before the start. Once you figure out the boss pattern it's quick to execute. I strongly prefer that to the minutes-long boss fights you see in a lot of modern games.

Tyler Sticka

Ryan mentioned on the last episode some orbs that were uncharacteristically well hidden. The worst example of that for me is in Snowy Mountain: There's a section with lurkers that infinitely respawn where orbs can hide beneath the snow. This game's a fun platinum overall, but if you happen to miss those while avoiding the lurkers they can be a pain to double back for.

WeGoGiant

Glitches are often useful for speedrunners, but they can be lots of fun for casual play as well. When entering Gol and Maia's Citadel after the Lava Tube, a cutscene featuring the Green Sage will play. After that cutscene you can save the game and quit out, then when you reopen that save a faulty checkpoint will spawn you at the end of the level, right by the elevator to the final boss. This allows players to skip basically the entire last level if they want to. This was patched in later releases of the game, but if you have any PAL version for Europe, or an American PS2 original (not greatest hits), there's a good chance you can get this to work.

James Gameboy

Hey, turns out if you're only getting the required 72 orbs, you don't have to go to the swamp area at all! How pleasant!

John Lee

I had a pretty good time with this game, but man oh man was the camera annoying! Especially in the spider cave, where aiming is necessary. Side note: I love doing older games now and then for Deepest Dives. More of this, please!

Alan Dellinger

Favorite moment? I couldn’t help but laugh during the Precursor City sequence, where you need to escape upward ahead of the quickly rising dark eco. At one point I was stuck hanging on a ledge but couldn’t jump up, as an enemy was standing there lording over me. We both quickly died a gooey death. If he had the fisherman’s cackle it would have been too perfect.

CptCobblePot

Did you navigate from the end of the game to the beginning? I found it amazing how Naughty Dog was able to make such an expansive game, with funnel like exploration in the ps2 era. Gives the feeling of the world being “open” and alive.

ComplementaryWater

Volcanin Crater only has two biomes to complete—Spider Cave and Snowy Mountain—but it does have a third offshoot tunnel that leads to…a couple of miners selling a bunch of power cells. Does it seem like a 3rd biome was planned there instead before being cut?

General Guy

How does everyone feel about that teaser cutscene as a completion bonus and in general? Personally, I was a bit underwhelmed, even though I enjoyed the act of getting 101% (since I feel personally obligated to complete every collectathon 3d platformer I play). As someone who only played this game, is this a good teaser for the events of Jak 2 or 3 without giving away spoilers?

Bread

From the first time I played this game as a kid, to this playthrough today, my favorite thing to do remains the same: Look backwards on the game world from the top of Gol And Maia's Citadel at the end. You can almost see all the way back to Sandover Village and it makes me re-live the fond memories of exploring the game world for the first time, every time I reach the end. I always used to imagine what else might be out there from that high vantage point, then Jak 2 came out, and that's a story for another time!

Shawn Mills

After raising the precurser city I went back in to finish off the other orbs and I discovered to my horror that there is no way to get out again. I had to repeat the rising dark eco twice before I figured out to go back to the beginning to get out of it.

Spencer Botine

Many won’t recall, but during the Super Mario 64 Deepest Dive, I wrote in stating, “Now I know what the entrance to hell looks like: It’s Tick Tock clock.” I was wrong - it is Spider Cave. Spider Cave is the entrance to hell.

MyDogIsHip

henrik mortensen

Do not worry, Charles! I am not gonna spoil the second and third game, just acknowledge the fact that the second and third one is pretty different gameplay wise. Because I do think it is a shame, a little at least that this is the only "real" Jak and Daxter game. I love the fact that they change it up so much in the sequels, but this game holds up so much better in my opinion. And I really like all the same things you mentioned in the last episode about the seamless world and the animations. It is kinda unique because of that and the sequels never improved the core feeling of the world that this game had. PS: Is that a reference to Dr. Feelgood by Motley Crue on the doctor note?

Jeorin

Anyone else notice that the two miners in the mountain area are a literal hothead and birdbrain? Also, I find it strange that the double jump for Jak is so finnicky, but the bird you can ride controls like an absolute dream. How'd they botch the default controls so badly!?

Gavin C

I appreciate that daxter got in 2 sexual jokes in the ending cinematic, first with the classic "big things come in small packages" and the final line of the game where he tells jak to "put it on ice big guy" which got a good chuckle out of me.

Joshua Duperoy

It wasn’t mentioned in the first episode, but can we talk a little about the delightful names for some of these trophies. I always crack a tiny smile anytime one comes up. A few of my favorites: Open sez me Eggs over hard Purple pain The lead zeppelin It’s cold out here The Orberator

Brian Paradis

I really liked the design of Lost Precursor City. That section included a host of new obstacles and mechanics and I think that the design of the stage did a great job of onboarding players to the new elements and then adding complexity. There are a few short corridors that introduce a new element and test the player on how it works before putting it in a new room and I really appreciated how thoughtful those design choices were.

CrabPalace

Loved this game back in the day but I didn't realise how ahead of its time it was until this play through. Has there been another platformer this "open world" outside of the Jak series? Even Mario Odyssey had totally separate levels. In reviews Odyssey was praised for not kicking you out of levels when you get a moon/star - Jak did that so many years earlier. Maybe Sonic Frontiers, of all things, will come close!

Interrotta

Did the Lost Precursor City remind anyone else of a lost Crash Bandicoot level? It had those electric pylons you jump over, and stylistically it reminded me of an aesthetic Neo Cortex would choose for a fortress.

Spencer

I really liked the platforms that rotate around each other in pairs in The Lost Precursor City (my favorite level overall). I feel that most of the platforming in this game is pretty boilerplate stuff, but this particular gimmick stood out to me and gave the player an interesting level of control without making the challenge trivial.

Andrew Burnes

I want to highlight what I feel is the best thing about this entire game: the environmental storytelling. Throughout the game, it subtly builds on Gol and Maia's ultimate goal from the lurkers trying to break into the dark eco silo on Misty Island to the precursor robot arm in the zeppelin to the massive robot excavation going on in Spider Caves. The game also does a phenomenal job of landmarking; someone else already highlighted the awesome look back at the end of the game, but even from the top of the Forbidden Temple in the first area, you can see the zeppelin over Rock Village in the distance. And nothing beats seeing the final arena in the distance from the peak of Snowy Mountain.

Chris Gilbert

Before this playthrough I always remembered Snowy Mountain as being one of my favorite levels in the game, but I came out of this run a lot cooler on it than before (although maybe it was just me being stuck looking for the last scout fly I needed for far too long). For those who had played the game before, were there any levels that you enjoyed less this time around, or conversely were there any levels you thought you hated that you've come around on?

Brainfreeze

A few quick thoughts I haven't seen mentioned yet: - The main bad guys / final boss are the most forgettable part of the game somehow. - Getting locked into an animation when you pick up eco is frustrating. It takes what should be a powerful moment and instead makes you vulnerable. - There is some very strange checkpointing going on in these later areas, especially if you're running around trying to collect everything. - The game deserves credit for skipping cutscenes if you die and have to replay a section. That feels very forward thinking.

Joshua Turner

Did anyone else notice that the voice of the Fisherman is freaking Kevin Conroy?! Yes, Batman! Makes me wonder if he was channeling is inner Joker with that laugh.

Bdun912

So call me crazy but I would fight Klaww a dozen more times to skip the zoomer levels that connect worlds. As someone who never played this when it came out (my platformers were mostly of the Nintendo variety) I don’t have the nostalgia or muscle memory to go with it. I 100% the first section but I put it down after Klaww and haven’t gone back. Before that I don’t think I got one power cell in Precursor Basin either—I just “left it for later”. Maybe I will go back to it but either way it was interesting to see how ahead of it’s time it was.

Creeeestheguy

A lot of mixed emotions on this one friends. The overall presentation, music, level design, and characters were top notch. I loved that certain levels you could skip areas completely to collect power orbs like in the snow fort area. You could just do a long jump to get right to the power orb and not trudge along the outside of fort walls. What really frustrated me though was the traversal physics and the camera literally working against you at certain points in the last few levels. In some platforming sections the camera wouldn’t orient to the correct position and I’d throw myself off cliffs countless times to my death. It just became really frustrating to play. Also, the boss fights are such a great part of the game and it’s disappointing that there are so few of them though out the experience. Glad I was finally able to play this, but boy was it a rough experience.

MrButtons

Hey gang, revisting this game has been a blast (got the platinum on this playthrough) and I was really suprised how well the humor holds up. Specifically, Daxter's delivery during the final boss of "stay fuzzy?...save the world?..." had me chuckling for longer than it probably should have. Are there any specific jokes that stood out to you throughout the game? P.S. I know Ben couldn't finish the game but I love that he jokingly stated in the first discussion that "every platformer starts on a beach and ends in a factory" without knowing the final level of this game would in fact, be in a factory.

David Dillinger (yojimbodjd)

This is my first ever play through of Jak and Daxter and I'm having a great time. I'm getting some motion sickness too and I think it's because the camera whips around pretty fast. Not too bad and not annoying like all the cheap lava deaths I had fighting Klaww. That was brutal.

Kyle Silva

You guys talked about how the level design has habitual purpose in Part 1, but i think that’s a real testament to the late game, where the game has to ramp up difficulty, but not forgo an open and freeing nature. Compared to the Super Mario 64 Deepest Dive, where the panel was colder on the later levels, partially for not being near as open as those first set of levels, its impressive to me that Jak1’s entire world can feel like everything naturally belongs, while also continually amping the challenges and the secrets.

Hunter Blessing

I like how the miners' hat designs reflect their character traits. One is "hot headed" with a torch light hat, and the other is "bird brained" with a canarie hat. Maybe the log on Samos's head is meant to reflect that he is "hard headed" or stubborn.

IanTClark

Funny thing happened to me right when I freed the Lead Zeppelin. The Green Sage congratulated Jax and said his uncle would be proud right as a swamp rat attacked my character. I had no health left and Jax pasted out dead. RIP

Kraid Belmont

Surprised how accessible most of the power cells were. I really wasn't trying to collect everything, and I still managed to collect all but 6 power cells. One power cell was left behind after collecting the 7th Scout Fly and not noticing when it dropped.

Palo

It wouldn't be right if MinnMax didn't call out the Prince reference in the game, the Purple Pain trophy! Less important shout out to the Lead Zeppelin trophy. I'm sure I missed some others too.

Tye McWhorter

Thanks for hosting part 2, Janet! Boggy Billy asks you to hold off the rat infestation so his pet will come home. Once completed, the pet is revealed to be this eyeless hog/dog creature. Any design notes on this abomination?

Reagan Walston

I am new to gaming and I thoroughly enjoyed this game, but I couldn't help but notice that Keira's design was over-sexualized, and Maia's was even more exaggerated. You could literally see half of Maia's ass crack in one scene. I'm no prude, but no men in this game are dressed remotely provocatively so the game's sexualized depiction of its only significant female characters paints a questionable picture of women in its universe. I dislike the idea of objectifying women as a hack to sell your game to horny, impressionable young men. I know that this issue is in no way unique to Jak and Daxter, but I found it hard to ignore the skimpy outfits, concerningly tiny waists, and incessant hip shaking. Women in real life can dress however they'd like, of course, but artists should think about whether their designs really come across as empowering or degrading.

DarkFishDays

What’s your theory on Gol’s balls? (Forgive me.) Are they weights holding him down, weapons, canisters of dark eco, or something else?

Harrison Holt

Hi, The end of this game has some really challenging platforming! The spider caves and the citadel were really frustrating difficulty wise, combined with the strange checkpoint behaviour. I found it to be a bit of a low point rather than a grand finale. Harrison

Geoff Enright

Hey MinnMaxers. I loved playing through the game to the end, and I'm pretty good with following story...but this one just seemed to go over my head. Bad guys affected by dark ico and we got to stop them using a precursor machine to take over the world? Oh and the sages have magical ico powers, I don't know. What I did enjoy most was gameplay despite at best frustrating camera controls. It is a solid platformer from start to finish. -Groffles

Charlie Hunter

I managed to get the blue rings power cell on the first try thanks to having the route pretty much memorized from years of practice. So I was feeling pretty confident in my abilities when I went to try to get the other tough power cell: climbing up the steps at the entrance to spider cave to shoot the metal crate in the volcanic crater. I humbled myself with 7 or 8 garbage runs before I finally got it. A little humility goes a long way, it seems :) What were your toughest power cells? Bonus comment: Thank you, Janet!!!

ImABiggyBoi

It's great how many small animations make you smile in this game. This time around, my favorite occurred when I fell from great heights to take some fall damage. Both characters pancaked flat on the ground, then sprung back up to keep moving. Good physical comedy right there I also wanted to note that being able to adjust your movement on snowy mountain with a punch made that section SO much more enjoyable. Although, I still petition ice platforming levels be banned from all of gaming.

Ian Miller

If you'll indulge a little trip down memory lane back to Sentinel Beach, there's a little secret that I don't think anyone on the panel knows. Instead of racing to get the power cell from the pelican, you can actually shoot the pelican with the cannon after it steals the power cell and rests on the island. A well placed cannon shot will blow up the pelican and allow you to grab the power cell without any hassle! A fun little detail I didn't discover until about my 20th playthrough of the game :D

Tonytheswordsman

In the beginning of the game the mission started with seeking a certain sage but I notice it isn’t fulfilled. This string goes undone and lost in the adventure. It was something I never noticed as a kid playing but now as an adult I see the holes in a classic I adore. Any other strings you found undone or wanting more flushed out?
