While I was freeing the second giant flying jellyfish, I realised those mad developers must have recorded separate voice lines for whether you were doing those quests alongside Atreus or Freya. Which means that anything can happen and no one is safe! Sure, maybe you can even freely switch between “companions” by the end of the game, but maybe either of them is “gone”! Dead, or worse! With the game’s insane level of production, I don’t feel even Kratos is safe: maybe they recorded a ton of extra “lead character” lines for Atreus, with Freya as the companion.

Kratos' journal entry after meeting Lunda the blacksmith gave me a chuckle. Quote: "Her comments are often puzzling and difficult to interpret and... I catch her staring. Often. However, if her armaments are strong, I will tolerate her."

Garrett Hulfish

My favorite gameplay change as Atreus includes all the random jars set up in the distance as "shooting ranges." The developers understood the inherent satisfaction of breaking jars with an arrow, so they set up significantly more jars as Atreus, often in clusters to break with the sonic arrows.

MuskyGoron

So when Atreus and Angrboda put the soul of a giant into the soulless snake…that was them “giving birth” to Jormungandr right? Am I totally misreading that? (I haven’t gotten to the stopping point, so I may not have hit a scene that confirms this)

Tanner Hoisington

Thought I'd drop a few tidbits from this Lip-smacking article on Richard Schiff playing Odin from IndieWire. - If he feels out of place in the cast, this was intentional. The role was created specifically for him, and Santa Monica approached him. When they did via his agent, it was his mid 20s son overhearing the call that begged Schiff to do it. Schiff has virtually no knowledge of gaming. - Judge and the rest act with one eye on a monitor showing how the characters will be depicted, but Schiff would demand all eyes on him. "I’d find a way to get their attention and be like ‘Look at me, motherfuckers!,’ which is an easy thing for Odin to do.” - He credits both the role and the passion of the devs and actors for challenging and reviving his love of acting in a way he hasn't felt for years. https://www.indiewire.com/2022/11/richard-schiff-interview-god-of-war-odin-wakanda-forever-1234783800/

Maybe I don't know enough about Norse mythology but Nidhogg being dead I believe will have massive consequences for all of the nine realms and I'm scared. Also now her babies don't have a mom and I felt so bad for killing her :( She was just doing her job, but dang Odin (ab)used her for that

As much as the Ironwood sections dragged on the environment and details were top notch. Coolest thing I noticed was Angrboda’s paint covering wolf Atreus fur when in his rage mode. Great touch and even on a base PS4, showed up well! A small note as well the way the alfheim “wolves” go slow between the Hjarta and Forbidden Sands areas is the most subtly frustrating thing ever. Also the crocodile jump scare right at the end of Freya closure quest was INSANE.

Gregory Xouris

Hey Minnmax! I'm one of the people who played the first 3 GOW games when they came out remembered nothing about the ashes or the story for that matter I'm enjoying the game so far, but the amount of meta humor is driving me crazy. What do you guys think?

JEREMY L

Did anyone else think the Norns were deliciously, or dare I say, lip smackingly, creepy?

Jonathan R

I wish the whole Ironwood section would have happened off screen and been an optional "Left Behind" style DLC for the player to do later. I could see it working on its own, but as part of this story it felt too slow and too long. Ending with a boss fight against a crazy old grandma to destroy her pot just wasn't as satisfying as fighting almost anything as Kratos. It actually soured me on playing as Atreus, and I let out a sigh of disappointment when I had to go right back to him as he stormed off to Asgard in a huff shortly thereafter.

Boie

How good is Odin. He’s such a breath of fresh air every time he enters a scene.

Joe Stone

I'm enjoying the game overall, but am struggling a little with the pacing. The Jotunheim sequence where Atreyus meets Angrboda went on for way too long for me and really tanked the momentum. I'm also about 14 hours in now and all the characters are still bickering about what they should be doing which is getting a little tiresome – the previous game had such a strong focus from the off (scattering the ashes) and I'm still waitin g for this one to have that same sense of urgency or goal for the characters.

Danny Yorkus

Ironwood section was definitely my favorite part of the game so far. I loved the autumn ascetics, how it seemed like Atreus was trying too hard not to say anything stupid in front of Angrboda, sometimes cutting himself off in the middle of sentences. The lead up to being caught by Gryla was suspensful and creepy.

Jethrin

I would die for Jalla the Yak

Tharaxis

It doesn't cease to amaze me the amount of fine detail that's been put into the facial animations for the main cast. Kratos is worn and weathered at times, and there are moments of emotion that you can just see on his face, with the way the eyes move, or the subtle movement of a lip. While Sindri, Atreus, Odin, Angrboda and more are equally as good. I'd possibly go as far as to say that Ragnarok may have the best facial animation right now of any game.

Kolel Pryor

I absolutely love the narrative and character elements... but the gamey aspects of this game are a bit of a chore at times. Menu UI, map and compass overload, and trial-and-error combat. I'm determined to see it through but a bit confused by the design, it feels like it's trying to serve contrasting target audiences.

Matt Lowery

So Persona 4 may be my favorite game of all time, and the scene where Freya has to accept that Asgard is a part of her before she could pull that sword out of the stone was 100% my jam. Danielle Bisutti has hands down delivered the most impressive performance to this point. She's so good at portraying that conflict constantly at play inside her.

Boondock-Bandit

I have so many things I like about this chunk but the Brock & Kratos segment of 'Forging Destiny' stole the show. Realizing why the Svartelheim dwarves were surprised to see Brock was brilliant (smart storytelling to have Sindri explain to Atreus what happened, so it's not a secret to us, but a big secret to the others), and when Kratos asked for Brock's blessing that's probably the most adorable thing he's ever done. We get to see a softer Kratos in this chunk (especially from the 'Secret of the Sands' quest). Also, Angrboda combat is awesome! Draupnir spear! This comment's too long! Favorite moment for the panel?

Fred Dinovo

In Jotunheim how long did it take you all to realize you can just shoot an arrow at the giant clams to have them open up and spit out the resource/item they are holding? For me it took until the rock skipping mini game when I accidentally hit one. Before that I spent a lot of time trying to ram them with the Jalla the Ox unsuccessfully.

God's Garage

Did everyone get that weird tree pop in during that ironwood section? Also, that INFINITE BOUNCING WALL IN ALFHEIM

John Scovic

I'm mostly loving the game so far, but I feel like the inclusion of characters like Freya and Thor as Companions in the game really undermines the godly feel of the characters. Hearing Freya say mechanical things like "I don't think we have the right equipment" or seeing Thor lock into the default "companion sprinting to stay ahead of you" feels weird! Maybe humanizing them is what they're going for, but it definitely made me take the characters less seriously

Ben Shively

Did anyone else get emotional during the wolf running scene? The combination of the music, art design, and context of just trying to make Atreus’ new friend feel a little better made it the most cinematic section yet for me.

Troy Ellison

I felt like the Gryla boss fight was simple in design yet super fun. Even though I haven't played little nightmares I couldn't help but get vibes of the kitchen scene with this whole section of the game, and I think the boss fight gives a good look at the creativity Sony Santa Monica is going for in boss variety in this sequel

ProcyonNumber6

Hey Benn and Friennds, Here me out, yeah Atreus has a compelling story and is fun to play but after playing through the Secret of the Sands questline I just want to play as Kratos and Freya! Maybe it's because I used to be an angsty teen like Atreus but am now a father like Kratos but listening to two parents talk about their parenting flaws and struggles while freeing the Hafgufas has made the Kratos and Freya relationship is much more compelling to me. Freya is an incredible character and all the side quests in this chunk build her out as such a powerful and amazing character. Thoughts on the development of their relationship?

quick_gotoplanB

I meant to add this comment for the first section. My favorite little detail so far is the quick snap of his fingers Thor does when he recalls his Hammer. Love it

Jonah Dieckhaus

I haven’t gotten to the next stopping point, but I completed the side quest to free the Hafgufa in the Alfheim desert just before Atreus’ story with Angrboda, and the paralleled sentiments of what Kratos said about wanting to spend time with and do things Atreus wanted to do not knowing what would happen with Ragnarök, and Angrboda telling Atreus he should cherish the time with his father while he has it, really resonated.

Mina Farag

The Draupnir spear is so cool! Honestly, blown away that they were able to include a brand new weapon, steeped in lore, that is so mechanically creative. After upgrading the skill tree a bit, the moveset becomes really satisfying. I will never get bored of throwing a ton of spears at an enemy and blowing them up.

Jake Simpson

In the first episode of Deepest dive you mentioned the “Table Scene” where you were playing as Atreus, then when you press a button to get up and you are now Kratos again. Suriel mentioned Soma but I can’t believe you didn’t remember Chrono Cross!!! I had only learned of this from the previous deepest dive and then played it for the first time this past year. I believe it was Serge switching to Lynx if I remember correctly. Also- just sitting at the table and not getting up for a long time was pretty hilarious as Kratos just kept shoving food into his face indefinitely…So funny!

Ben Reeves

One of my favorite moments in the game is when you first start hanging out with Tyr and he says “you’re going the wrong way.” If you start exploring off the main path. Then Atrius says “ my dad really loves loot.” That was just lip smackingly fun. PS I’m surprised people didn’t mention on the first episode that Thor is giving off serious Thanos from the MCU vibes

Ben Reeves

Oh also, did anyone else get a little scared when they were climbing the wall in Asgard? I got lip-smacking nervous during that thing even though I knew Atreus was going to be fine.

Cris

Hey Divers, This game does a good job of making you feel like the God of War. Your weapons and combos and enemies like the elves, valkyries and dark shippiedues are all worthy of Kratos and his skills. Thats why Im puzzled as to why so much of this game is spent in encounters with pest enemies like nightmares, poison frogs? slugs and lizards, who attack from off screen. Whats the deal?

Kyle Dodge (FishAisle)

I love the "my two dads" feeling I get from Kratos and Mimir when they speak with Atreus. It shows that the two have grown so close together and care so much for Atreus and the person he's growing into.

Brian Paradis

I didn’t get very far in this chunk, so I’ll ask a question. Who is using the Valor version of Spartan Rage? I tried it for a while and felt that it was too much of a trade-off from the normal Fury version.

Piet van Rosmalen

Atreus climbing the wall of Asgard was very well done. I go rock climbing and bouldering once in a while, and he actually uses some real climbing moves (eg flagging). I got sweaty palms playing through this section. The jumps he does are really insane tho, but then again he is a God.

The Sideline Crowd

I'm really enjoying the music of this game more and more. Each area has such a good theme that fits with the environment so well. The music also does a great job of enhancing action scenes and combat with epic themes while m dramatic and emotional scenes have their beauty enhanced by the music. I especially loved the music during the scene with the Norns and how haunting it came off. Also, The mileage they get out of different versions of the main theme for the game is impressive. Bear McCreary is quite talented

Greg Spenser

This middle section for me was kind of a blur (in a good way). It opened up in a way where I didn't want to stop playing so I could see what happens next. Those story beats led to roster changes and constant rotation of companions in combat. Angrboda, Freya, Thor, Brok... I might be missing some but it was always cool to see how they all played their roles in combat.

Robbie Adams

the Valkyrie fight was a real B&$?#! I struggled over and over until finally deciding to lower difficulty, only to find that I'm plagued by the "stuck difficulty" bug. I've tried all the fixes online, but no luck. I'm stuck on balance mode whether I like it or not. There was satisfaction in the end though once it was revealed to be Freya! I was like "makes total sense for her to give me this much trouble" - anyone else plagued by this bug?

Faraz Rizvi

I haven't finished this whole section while I write this but does the panel think this game is being held back by last gen? I initially thought this game couldn't look any better but after seeing the PS4 version which is 95% as good looking as the PS5 version, its hard not to think about what more they could have done if this game was built for the PS5. As I get further in the game I do feel that WOW factor from the original GOW1 -> 2 isn't really there. Everything seems pretty much in line with GOW 2018

Rigglz

Hello Everyone! I really loved the character interactions when you have Freya, Mimir, and Kratos while doing side quests. Mimir keeps making puns that Freya and Kratos are annoyed by. Kratos at one point says, "you're not funny," as Mimir made a pun after completing a side mission. I burst into laughter. Also if you haven't interacted with the light elf and dark elf couple in Freyr's camp after helping Freya I highly recommend it! Wait for Freya to talk with them as well.

Miguel Medjai

Really liking the changing partner dynamic that has been going on. Was hoping Freya would join your team. Was fully expecting a Tyr moment where she is there for the journey. Was worried that she wasnt going to be a partner as during Nidhogg she wasnt taking orders. Glad she was full fledge partner with skills and all.

Levi

I know a lot of people are talking about how quick the freya and Kratos relationship change goes from enemies to Allies. But I went ahead and did the side quests with Freya right after getting her as a companion and the conversation and quests really helped explain her change of heart and made it feel much more organic.

Third Times A Charm

Did anyone else happen to notice that if you complete the Secret of the Sands mission without Atreus that Freya and Mimir comment on his absence, which is followed by Kratos saying it is a consequence of his disobedience. Atreus is also brought up at the conclusion of the mission once the jellyfish creature is freed from the earth. I just found it interesting that Sony Santa Monica built-in different sets of dialogue pre-and post mission to account for the fact that certain side content would be done with one character versus another.

Branden Murphy

My favorite part of this chunk is definitely the Freya/Kratos partnership. I love their conversations. They have a much different feeling than Atreus/Kratos conversations. Kratos seems to think of Freya as more of an equal and he brings up deeper topics like his brother and daughter. I did not expect Deimos to be brought up and it was a nice surprise. I was also kind of waiting for the shoe to drop where Kratos talked about how her ashes are on his body.

GreenMountainState

Is it just me or are there maybe too many mechanics in this game vs 2018? For me it is slightly taking away from the fluidness and pace of the game...

GreenMountainState

Love that we're getting to know and interact with other characters and that kratos and Atreus are split up, but.... These really linear sections are long!

humblebees

I thought the Norns were really well portrayed. I thought they convincingly came off condescending to Kratos but not to the audience. And I'm a big fan of the idea that instead of being able to truly see the future they instead have supernatural perception of the individuals and thus can very easily predict major plot points by relying on the characters themselves to act the way they know they will. It makes fate both "real" but also technically within your control. Really cool scene

Patrick O'Connor

Did anybody else spot the little mushroom-headed folks in vanaheim that make the shrill toad noise from Mario?

TheMasterDS

Odin’s Santa hat kind of makes sense mythologically - aren’t they supposed to be the same person or some such? It’s true

Adam Harris

Did anyone else use the nidhogg proton pack to capture the children? Does this Rattatoskr the Norse Professor E. Gadd?

Matthew Clark

Trying to clear out the wretch nests as Atreus was really disorienting and just annoying lol. Stop giving us busy work for the sake of ambient storytelling and just give me a cutscene already
