Welcome back to The Deepest Dive! In the second episode of our five-part game club series on Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, MinnMax's Ben Hanson is joined by his childhood friends Grant and Ronnie as well as Ross "The Star Wars Guy" Pfund to discuss everything about Chapters 1-4. We don't spoil anything beyond Chapter 4 in Rebirth for this discussion. We talk about the open world structure of the game, Tifa and Cloud's challenging relationship, combat tips, the return of Roche, and a whole lot more.  Also! Not quite caught up yet but i am so stoked this is almost 4 hrs hahaha

Folks! I have a pretty weird relationship with FFVII. I used to have a modded PlayStation and my weird uncle would sell my mom games for ten guilders (the Dutch currency before Euros) a pop. This included FFVII, but disc 2 did not function, so I played disc 1, which is basically what is covered in Remake, over and over again. Never played the rest of it, but I’m familiar with the biggest story beats. THEN fast forward to the PSP era. I found the UMD disc for Crisis Core on the street one day. Not making this up. Finished that, loved it. Then saw Advent Children, did not understand it. Went on to play and love Remake and I’m now following you along for Rebirth. Now, here’s the question. In my highly specific situation, should I stop what I’m doing and go back and find out what happens in OG FFVII? I have done my research, but no redditor is in my exact situation it seems. Just started hard mode the flashback wasn’t that bad - but got into chapter 2 - and they give you the OG experience in hard mode trying to fight Midgarsormr right after story mode without leveling up he will destroyyyyyyy you. Also that flowers side quest on hard mode is ridiculous even at max level those mandragoras rip you to shreds in seconds. Teaches you to perfect block and use cover very quickly - this stands out as by far the hardest hard mode side quest so far. And on the pod some people said they had an ugly flower crown - you get a gold star next to the quests completion screen if you fulfill the the ‘good ending’ by gathering the flower colors shown in the drawing and it looks different at the end - otherwise it looks ugly.

Finally made it through chapter 4 to listen to this. Ben quoting Polar Opposites by MM made my night. Will have to rip away this subscription from my cold dead hands now!

Finally finished Chapter 4 last night and made it through Chapter 5 today. I’m absolutely blown away by this game and love hearing this group discuss since I have a very similar background with FF7. The dog escort mission with crying Barret was a highlight and I absolutely loved seeing the Condor in the background after you do that mission.
