We return to Hideo Kojima's back catalogue in the 1994 Japan-only title Policenauts. Rich, Chris Worthington and Leah look into the mind of Kojima before he took the world by storm with Metal Gear Solid. Borrowing heavily from 1980s cinema, blending visual novel and point-and-click, as well as science fact and fiction, Policenauts tells a near future crime drama about life, thriving and surviving in space.Music featured in this issue:1. Cool, been looking forward to this one for years! Wasn't sure it would ever happen, but here we are!

I for one am glad that the panels on Cane and Rinse are willing to have conversations about problematic subject matter in games and look at them with a modern eye. Still, I think a lot of the sexual subject matter in Kojima games and other games of the 90s were often seen as problematic at the time, but it could just be my middle aged brain misremembering things again. Also, Leah and Tim Rogers (whom she mentions) and a number of other people mention misters all the time. How hard is it to get one of those things up and running and to find the necessary files to play games on it? Sounds fun but don’t want too much of a headache locating game files for it if that’s an issue.

Chris Worthington

I would highly recommend a MISTer. It costs a bit to get a complete set up but once you do there are lots of YouTube videos which will help you set up the cores you're interested in.

Great show, really enjoyed this. I particularly liked Rich stating he "wouldn't go on record as saying this" whilst quite literally on record as saying this. 😆 Great discussion though, all the panel were excellent! Been hoping you'd cover this for years and wasn't disappointed.

Good show. As a German and a history teacher I have to say that the comparison of this game and Hitler’s Mein Kampf is itself more than tasteless and inappropriate. Mein Kampf portrays the Nazi ideology and prepares for the holocaust so comparing this historical manifest and Policenauts is more than insensitive. I guess I understand what Rich wanted to say but I would not let my students in school let openly compare the depiction of women in this game with the manifest for the genocide on the Jews. We in Germany may be more sensitive to this topic I guess but even then: a comparison like this relativises the holocaust and this is unacceptable. Sorry for this downer and I am sure Rich doesn’t want to imply this but in German society and even policy this danger of relativisation of the holocaust is something we don’t accept. I don’t know how other countries think about it.

Yeah, you're right to call that one out. I thought about it after the recording and regretted it. Won't happen again.
