The infamous odd-one out. Nintendo SPD collaborated with Tecmo's Team Ninja for the Wii-exclusive follow-up to the Prime trilogy, with results that weren't greeted entirely enthusiastically by press or punters alike. Leon, Chris Worthington, Leah, Rich and community correspondents get to grips with Metroid: Other M - its quirky cameras and unintuitive interface, and perhaps most controversially, its character-changing portrayal of series hero, Samus Aran.Music featured in this issue:1. I haven’t listened to this yet but I’m sorry you guys had to play this. Mad respect

Why doesn’t Nintendo treat Metroid like they treat the Zelda series and drop the narrative links between all of the games for the most part so they don’t have to make a new excuse for Samus to lose her powers and regain them every entry? It’s just a different Samus, Ridley, Mother Brain, etc. Occasionally games can be interlinked to tell a narrative arc, but otherwise they should free themselves of this storyline that is chaining the series down and embrace Metroid as a set of gameplay and basic narrative concepts that Zelda and Mario essentially are. Metroid needs its Breath of the Wild moment. I don’t think it will ever get there if they and the fans insist on sticking to narrative sequels. I love this series and would like to see it finally become more popular than it has been. I know the next Metroid Prime is on the horizon, but whoever is working on the next one needs to really think about what a Metroid game is and build from there while finding something new like Aonuma’s team did with Zelda.

I tremendously enjoyed this episode - having diverging view points always makes for great discussion. I particularly enjoyed hearing everyone’s thoughts on the narrative, which felt like a bad anime story from my recollection. It has just occurred to me after listening to this however, that the only two Metroid games I have played is Prime Hunters (which I have fond memories of) and Other M (which I do not have fond memories of) - I probably should try out one of the better loved Metroids at some point.
