Julian 'Jaz' Rignall joins us as special guest for this 45th anniversary celebration of Williams' Defender, and its sequel, Stargate (both 1981). Leon, Chris Worthingon, Michiel and Defender Champion (in every sense of the word) Jaz search for the right words with which to describe this most intense and frenetic arcade experience. Along with contributions from the Cane and Rinse community, we talk graphics, sound, mechanics, conversions, clones and spiritual successors.Music featured in this issue:1. You got Jaz Rignall on!? That's amazing!

Steven Cookson

Jaz Rignall? Now there's a blast from the past. I can only imagine him sitting in a black void with a flowing mullet as game knowledge pours out of him. It sounds like Jay had to work overtime to clean up his language though, but it was definitely worth it. Great show from all involved. This year has already started strongly.

This was a great one to listen to! Nice to see Jaz didn't get the no swearing memo 😂😂

Great podcast! Had to stop halfway to listen to the opening music to Datastorm - what a classic.

What a great show, games like Defender and Stargate aren't usually my bag, but having Jaz on and some great anecdotes about playing these games in the arcades made it well worth a listen, i fancy i may need to get his book now.

Great ep. Was thinking Doom (1993) owes a debt to Defender, too - the inertia in the movement, the fast pace. I'm pretty sure Romero's explicitly acknowledged Asteroids as an influence. Seems the best game design (and art in general) is iterative, and that's one thing that's so rewarding about playing older games, but also finding games that allow particularly satisfying 'flow' states for players that are up to their challenges. Cheers all
