Final Fantasy leaps the generation gap like a nimble young chocobo, and sets up camp on the Nintendo's new for the 90s 16-bit behemoth. Leon, Leah, Sean and Jon Salmon ruminate on how that extra power allowed Square Soft to spread its wings and really go to town - and even the moon - with the fourth instalment of its JRPG saga. Community contributions and musings from around the wider web top off our Final Fantasy IV show - the fourth of a planned 13 issue series.Music used in this issue:1. Red Wings by Nobuo Uematsu2. Final Fantasy 4 was my second Final Fantasy game, I started with 6 (then 3) and went backwards to 4. That said you would expect that I would think less of 4 but honestly I still love this game to this day. Yeah some of the mechanics have shown their age but it doesn’t change the amount of imagination on display. Why did we go to the moon? Because it’s a fantasy and fantasy doesn’t need to be constrained to medieval tropes exclusively. I wish more games would take the swings this game takes. I want to see crazy unexpected fantastical turns in my fantasy games! And for the characters? Don’t even get me started. To this day I still love the frenemy that is Kain to Cecil. Rydia is still my favorite summoner of the series and Edge has my favorite character design that ninjas would ever have. This game has it all great music, fantastical settings, amazing characters and a beautifully well crafted plot. It might not be my favorite Final Fantasy but it’s definitely up there probably top 5 if not it’s just outside the top 5. Recommended if you can tolerate old graphics and slightly outdated mechanics.
