On a mid-90s roll, some of the team behind the Final Fantasy games broke off to create a follow-up to Square's 1991 Game Boy title, Seiken Densetsu (aka Final Fantasy Mystic Quest). This sequel was intended to be a more ambitious and action-driven type of RPG for the - then forthcoming - SNES CD add-on. When the relationship between Nintendo and Sony broke down, Seiken Densetsu 2 was repurposed for cartridge and released in the West as Secret of Mana. In this podcast, Leon, Brian, Josh and Leah see if they can (re)discover the magic of Randi, Primm and Popoi's colourful and whimsical adventure.Music used in this issue:1. Mannnn there was some incredible banter on this one.

Ahh Secret of Mana, I first played this back in 94 or 95, so I would have been 12 or 13. I was at a friends place where he introduced me to the world of Squaresoft. He had this Final Fantasy 2 and I think 3 (4 and 6 respectively) and Breath of Fire. Of them I was least interested in Secret of Mana believing it nothing more than a Zelda rip off. He convinced to trying it and this game confirmed to me that I will always be a Square fan. I always played as the black magic wielding sprite, mostly equipped with the whip. I loved everything about this game. The art direction was so vivid and imaginative. The music was absolute chefs kiss. Heck I even like the negatives of this game, characters getting stuck on the stage and frames dropping during spells, which I always read as this spell is so powerful it breaks the game. Years later I got the remake for the PS4 and unlike Brian (sorry Brian) I love the remake. I was delighted to see the only thing that changed were the graphics, they even kept the negatives! I was so happy, this im was exactly how I wanted the remake to go! Though I understand for many they won’t find the hiccups half as charming as I do. All in all I absolutely recommend this game if you can stomach old graphics and finicky ai. In my humble opinion this was so much better than any Zelda game I ever played. Give me Secret of Mana all day every day!
