Leon is joined by Jay, Karl and Tony for the second of our single format console special podcasts. Sony entered the videogames hardware market in the mid-1990s and made a massive splash with its debut system, the PlayStation. The panellists share their memories of this heady time when massive CD storage, 'real' audio, CG via FMV and thousands of textured polygons moving at a hitherto unprecedented lick became available - and affordable - in the home. We also delve into the machine's massive library of classics (and stinkers), as well as airing some fond recollections provided by the Cane and Rinse community. This console special was edited by Jay Taylor

Fantastic show - the PS1 brings back all of the memories for me! It was my first home console and quickly solidified gaming as debateably my greatest passion in life. I have distinct memories of playing the Spyro trilogy, which has remained my favourite 3d platformer. Equally I remember on a Saturday night, my parents renting Crash Bandicoot 2 for me - it probably took the better part of a year for me to beat that game altogether. Then there were the games that a sub 10 year old probably shouldn't have been playing or were outside the realms of my juvenile understanding, like MGS and Dino Crisis 2. Beating Psycho Mantis as a child was one of those pivotal memories for me - I remember having a little paperback guidebook with a few different games listed within it and info on how to beat them. There were also some more obscure games I played which has taken until I reached adulthood to understand the impact they have had on what I look for in games - the JRPG Legend of Dragoon and Jade Cocoon - with rose tinted glasses, fantastic games. In a similar vain, the hack'n'slash Capcom game, Dragon Valor - definitely a game best left in the past. It felt like the biggest game in the world to me at the time - 2 whole discs, branching paths, multiple playable characters. It has stuck with me since then and driven my love of narrative in games. I am 4 years too late adding this ! But alas, I mainly wanted to say thank you for producing such a great episode, with great commentary and hitting me with a wave of nostalgia.

Very heartwarming episode! Took me back to my first foray with the PS1 (uncle rented it from Blockbuster!). Great episode

It never occurred to me how unusual my PS1 experience was: Lunar, Legend of Mana, Warhawk, Jade Cocoon, Chocobo Racing, and Blazing Dragons. I was only 7 when it came out which would explain how I missed so many of the maturer games. Anyway, great episode! Brought back a lot of memories.

Man sorry for what's sure to be a wall of text reply but this episode choked me up. When I was a kid I was a sega guy who used to pretend I was sonic fighting mario when I was 5 to getting a Nintendo 64 one birthday in 97 from my grandma. I'm the only person I remember this happening too but my Nintendo 64 died during a shadow of the empires level. One of the on foot ones probably not a coincidence. We took it back and I saw that the psone had a Jurassic park game and I had to have it. It was a horrible mess but I have so many amazing memories I don't want to type much more but one of my best friends in high school and I would stay over each others house every weekend playing harvest moon back to nature on separate farms for two hours we printed each characters likes and dislikes and wrote recipes down damn incredible. I won't list any more games but jay you're going to love Kula world it was amazing the perspective and objectives on levels and the art design are all amazing unlocking the new beach balls was peak anticipation

I remember persuading my Nan to by me the issue of the Official Playstation magazine with the RE2 demo on it obviously not aware of what it was...I soon got a telling off from my mum when she found out my Nan had spent £4.99 on a zombie killing simulator :-/ That and the Tekken 3 demo stand out in my memory of "games that couldn't be done" sellotaped to covers of magazines.

Hahaha I just heard my forum post, sorry nan!
