For the eighth of our ten podcasts on the mainline Resident Evil games, we return to Kijuju for potentially the most controversial and divisive entry in the series. Leon, Charlotte, Jacob and Michiel decide whether or not Resident Evil 5 retained enough of its mighty predecessor's DNA to stay relevant, or if - Uroboros like - the franchise was starting to eat its own tail as a 'me-too' Gears of War type affair. The panel and our contributors also discuss the thorny issue of the game's African setting and accompanying imagery.Music used in this podcast:1. Item Box by Kota Suzuki2. Awh man, I had wanted to be this my first podcast I'd sent in stuff for on the forum and twitter, but I kept postponing it being under the impression I had time enough. And I didn't. Dang! Anyway, really stoked for this one. Got it downloaded and ready to listen to it at work today! Cheers

Listening to this was real food for thought, When I first played through resident evil 5 I was very young and not as sensitive to racism as I am now and didnt see a lot of the controversy. I finished it with the AI just because being a resident evil experience I wanted to go for the scares and thought a co op partner would ruin the vibe for me, Really need to revisit at some point, The talk of the racist Imagery at the that of this podcast feels especially important. In the context of the current Migrants heading towards the Border and the way Trump and his supporters think and discuss these people as inhuman its hard not to see that the imagery mentioned is very problematic. Thank you for the food for thought :)

After being burned by the last 4 Resident Evil games I told myself I wouldn’t buy this on day one, and I didn’t, I waited a week lol. I brought the game home to be greeted with the fact that it’s 2 player. So my friend and I booted up the game and to my surprise, I loved it! That opening village, though being similar to RE4 did its job and got the hooks in right away. My friend and I played until we got past the cave chapter. The next day I realized that you could farm that stage for fast funds and spent some time upgrading all of my gear before moving on and experiencing it as a single player game. To be honest, I never ran into problems with Sheva, she functioned more or less how I wanted her to. I love RE5, to me it is the most fun game of the series. Now, about the elephant in the room with this game, I think putting the game in Africa might have been a poor mistake. If you white wash the Majini you’d have just as many people upset if not more or you make them black which doesn’t look great either. My question where was the outrage for RE4? Last that I checked there is a lot of discrimination against Latino people and no one said anything. I only mention this more or less to ask can people of color not be zombies? If not, isn’t that a form of discrimination as well? I think they just were damned if they and damned if they don’t. Having said that if you can look past some questionable decisions involving the locale then I would absolutely recommend this game. There is so much fun to be had on single player but especially in multiplayer. It’s super cheap nowadays as well so that doesn’t hurt anything. Great job as always on the pod guys!
