Josh, Leah, Jon and Maya Santandrea continue our journey through the Final Fantasy series with the Super Nintendo Entertainment System's final entry. Hironobu Sakaguchi, who has been intimately involved with the series up to this point, takes a reduced role as Producer for this title and instead Yoshinori Kitase and Hiroyuki Ito take on directing duties. With this change in responsibilities came a change of style and approach as compared with series up to this point. This would ultimately shape the trajectory of Final Fantasy as it moved onto new devices. We discuss how we feel about these changes, plus our responses to the largest cast of playable characters in the series entire history and a villain that represents a very different kind of evil than we've seen up this point. This and more, as we cover Square's 1994 release, Final Fantasy VI.Music used in this show:1. Forever Rachel by Nobuo Uematsu2. Great podcast with good tips! I'm playing through FF6 again after 10 years and found myself so unprepared for Kefka's Tower, I forgot all the goodies and secrets that I should get before until I listened to this ep!

Final Fantasy 6 was my first Final Fantasy and first RPG. I think it was 94 or 95 so I would have been 12 or 13. At the time I was a Street Fighter 2 kid so when my friend brought over FF6 and I first saw it I honestly thought the turn based battle was kind of lame, until he got Sabin and handed me the controller. Thanks to Sabins blitz moves I had an in to the game and boy oh boy did I go to town from there! As soon as I put in my first blitz command I realized the game “pause” for you to do commands because of the wealth of variety in attacks. I wasn’t just punching or kicking like in Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat. There are spells, Tools, Sketches, Lore, ninja moves and of course the beautiful cherry on top Blitz, which borrows moves from Street Fighter. I got my own copy that year for Christmas and I’ve purchased every form of it since. Last one I played and beat (platinum trophy acquired) was Pixel Remaster. There’s almost nothing I don’t love about this game. To address the comments about the nihilism and negativity in this game, yes it there and it is vast but this game is about overcoming and surviving to find hope. I know when I see the mid point event I thought then the same thing I do now, you messed up Kefka. You left my party alive and we will survive to come remove you from the power you positioned yourself in. We will be here tomorrow and we WILL find a way to continue dreaming of better days regardless of what you throw at us. To me that’s what makes this game important and one of (if not the) best games in the series and genre. If you can stomach old 16 bit graphics and a turn based battle system then I absolutely recommend this game. It has such amazing characters, music and story. Thanks for the wonderful podcast gang!
