Appropriately - for the earth-shattering conclusion to our seventh year - we celebrate the coming of age of Square's Final Fantasy VII. A little over twenty-one years on from its release, Leon, Josh, Leah and Thomas, along with a treasure chest of messages from the Lifestream, come together to express just why this instalment is held so dear by so many, while also acknowledging the game's infamous quirks and shortcomings.Music used in the issue:1. It was only when I saw the email turn up in my inbox that this episode had arrived, that I said to my wife "my real Christmas present just turned up". She was well chuffed.

This.was.beautiful! Fully deserving of the Super Extended Cut. I think whether people love or hate FFVII, it came at a time which was so important to the industry and (excuse the pun) was a game changer. I got my copy for Christmas and was amazed that it was on so many discs and was so chuffed when I had to change discs. However, my abilities were hampered by a lack of experience in RPG's and I struggled, having to use my cousins Memory Card to steal a save to complete the game. I blame Aerith and a dragon fight I could never get past due to never using her in a party, she was so rubbish she would die straight away. Cloud should have definitely invested time in Tifa...I blame her for my "unusual" feelings whenever I see a cosplay hahaha Due to Cane and Rinse, I am visiting FF4 for the first time and hope to move onto 6 then 7 between the new games an backlog

I don’t believe that there is a single “bad” mainline Final Fantasy, having said that this one is in my bottom 5 FFs. Back when I was a freshman in high school this game came out and it was my first game I preordered with my own money. I got a collectors edition shirt (which I gave away to a friend) and a strategy guide (also first game I got a strat guide for.) I liked the game when I first played it but not as much as 4 and 6. There was always a weirdness to this game that prevents me from actively loving it. The cinematics for the time were gorgeous, the pre-rendered backgrounds were like nothing I’d ever seen. The battle graphics were ok but the spells were amazing. Shame about those over world graphics with the Duplo characters (even back in 97 I thought they were ugly and reminded me of Wild Arms. The characters are memorable but that’s not always good. I like Cloud and Tifa and found their story great but wanted Aerith to kindly piss off and stop trying to be a home wrecker. Barret is one of the most egregious examples of racism in the series being nothing more than a Mr. T stand in. And Cid, he a a woman abusing pile of crap with zero redemption. I hate him so much and to me he actively damages the game. Also the plot is ok but suffers from holes (as an example after so much of big deal was made of Holy it’s turns out to be just as useless as the character that cast it, it’s actually the lifestream that saves the planet the holy spell almost did nothing to stop meteor). But I liked it back then. As an adult last year I started playing the game series chronologically. Age has not treated this game well and I found it to be my second least favorite of the series so far, with only 3 being below it. There are things I like but the things I said before about Barret and Cid are even worse in the year 2025. And that scene that broke everyone? Sorry to say I was glad to see her go, it meant she could butt out of Cloud and Tifa and I didn’t have to have someone so weak in my team. To me it’s the worst FF on the PlayStation by a country mile. It’s not that it’s a bad game, like I said earlier I like every mainline FF but this certainly isn’t top of the class, it’s the McDonald’s of FF popular for reasons that try as I might I’ll never understand, especially for such a lukewarm product. Edit: for context I did get the platinum trophy in FF7 on the rerelease and I’m up to FF XII currently.
