In this issue Josh, Leah, Charlotte and Cane and Rinse newcomer Jesse uncover the treasures and dark desires of the fifth entry in Atlus and P-Studio's Shin Megami Tensei off shoot JRPG series. We discuss the game's message to "Wake Up, Get Up, Get Out There!" in the face of societal injustice and corrupt individuals in positions of power, but "Beneath the Mask" we uncover a desire to engage in the very thing it's so keen to criticise. Do the Phantom Thieves manage to steal our hearts? Is sneaking, shooting, slicing and Persona splicing a success? Can we manage to focus on our studies or do we end up eating unreasonably large burgers, believing this somehow makes us "brave"? Will the Cat let us sleep when we god damn choose or will it continue to steal precious hours of social time from us!? Does the game hold a "Last Surprise" none of us were expecting? Join us, as we cover 2017's Persona 5.Music used in this issue:1. Last Surprise by Shoji Meguro2. Rivers in the Desert by Shoji MeguroCane and Rinse 368 was edited by Jay Taylor

Though Persona 5 was not my first Persona to play, that would have been SMT: Persona Revelations on PSone back when it came out in the States. It is the first I played and beat. At the time I was working at a hotel when of my coworkers found out I love RPGs but never got into Persona due to not enjoying the first game, I didn’t like that the dungeons were first person. He recommended this game and I not so politely told him I wasn’t interested in playing as high schoolers. Having said that he brought the game with him and forced it on me. Honestly, I’m glad he did, as Persona 5 not only got me interested in the series but it just might be my favorite PS4 game and as a long time Square fan I’m not sure how I feel about that. I love the characters (I don’t care what people say, I have a black and white tux kitty and just got her when I got this game and Morgana quickly became a mascot for my house among my wife and myself.) The music is amongst the best in the genre, the art style is on point, and Adachi is one of my favorite characters in RPGs full stop, especially in P5 Royal. I went back and played 4 and 3, and though I like them both Persona 5 is my personal favorite. So if you’re looking for something to rob your life from you, I’d recommend it, after all you’ll never see it coming. Edit: I could not disagree more with Ben 77 million to Persona 3 had the least likable characters in the series so far to me, they felt like they just barely tolerated each other and Ken was just aggravatingly bad. I also found the story to me rather forgettable from 3 something about a dark hour? I’m still not entirely sure what was going on in that game. Goes to show you can’t please everyone.

Really neat to hear the group's kinda 8/10 take on Persona 5. I definitely agree that the game could use an update with it's depiction of gender and sexuality issues. It's interesting to see how people view the game in comparison to its revered predecessors. Always fun to hear the crew tackle the Persona games. Thanks for taking the time to make this episode :)

This was a good episode. Happy to hear that there were more than a few people that felt tugged in both directions by this entry in the series. While I think Persona 5 is a triumph in UI design, music and aesthetics and larger story concepts that seem to be ripped from the headlines of today; it does suffer from some increasingly problematic character depictions. I feel that as the greater societal conversation has shifted, the Persona series is going to face more criticism of its depiction of LGBTQ characters. Its strange because as you guys talk about, the larger story concepts of internet trolling/groupthink, totalitarian leadership and populist ideals feel so immediate. As a side note, the final few hours feel strangely tacked on as the grounded story concepts above are swept to the side in favor of a "group of teens destroy a god" narrative that seems so tired in JRPG storytelling. Despite all of this I think Persona 5 does so much right in favor user experience and usability paired with an absolutely enthralling audio/visual package. The 100 hours I spent on it flew by where as some 10/15 hrs games a fraction of the size dragged for me. Thank you for covering this!

Only about 30 minutes in, but the edit on this one seems a little rougher than usual, did you guys have any sound issues?

Great to hear Leah and Charlotte again on another episode and a warm welcome to Jesse. Not forgetting Josh of course 😃.

A great episode as always. Josh and Leah always seem super excited when they talk about the persona games so it was a joy to hear them return for P5, but it was really cool to also hear from Charlotte again as well as newcommer Jesse and hear their experiences on P5 and JRPGs in general.

First episode I've ever listened to and for one of my favourite JRPG series to boot. Really enjoyed it, and looking forward to catching up on other (and future) episodes!
