The eleventh show in our 13 podcast series about the mainline (and non-MMO) Final Fantasy series is all about 12. Final Fantasy XII spent a (then) world record five years in development as Square Enix pushed the boat out in terms of production values and innovation - shaking up the formula by taking cues from Western RPGs and MMOs. Leon, Brian, Josh, Leah and Cane and Rinse community contributors elaborate upon what struck a chord with them, and what hit a nerve.1. Main Theme by Nobuo Uematsu/Hitoshi Sakimoto/Hayato Matsuo/Masaharu Iwata2. Struggle for Freedom by Hitoshi Sakimoto Hayato Matsuo/Masaharu Iwata

Final Fantasy XII is a very odd game for me. I picked up my copy day one, similar to Leah and Brian I got the steel box copy. I was so excited to play this game after loving FFX and FFX-2. But as much as I like there’s almost just as much I don’t. I like how the world is the most realistic world so far in the series especially with its inter connectivity but with the word salad that are the names of the town are almost instantly forgettable. Also because of how big the world is I often forget why I was doing what I was doing by the time I made it there. The characters are hit and miss, Ashe, Basch, Balthier, and Fran are well written, shame that Vaan is the worst protagonist in the series to me offering next to nothing in the plot after the first couple of hours and Penelo felt DOA in the plot to me. The character design for the males are great but the females have questionable design to be charitable. Fran is in lingerie for some unknown reason, Penelo has a hideous outfit, and why is Queen Ashe wearing such a micro skirt? The battle system is fresh and interesting but can feel similar to back seat driving thanks to the gambit system. The voice acting to me feels like a step back after the previous games as well. Though they articulate well they all sound like they are on mood stabilizers and thus when they react to anything it always really subdued. I really want to love FF XII and am currently replaying the game (I’m almost at the end). But I’m still just kinda lukewarm on this entry. So close to greatness yet so far. I would recommend this game to people who are very familiar with the genre and series but if you’re a newcomer look elsewhere for a better entry point.

Really enjoyable episode. This is only the second Final Fantasy game that I’ve managed to finish ( the first being 9 ) and it’s a game I’ll definitely go back to again as I loved it so much.
