We're closing in on the final entries in our Final Fantasy series of podcasts, and as the first FF game released on the seventh generation of consoles, Final Fantasy XIII is a significant one, for better or worse. Are the beautiful vistas of Pulse and the technological marvels of Cocoon worth the oft-cited linearity it takes to take them in? Join Leah, Charlotte, Josh and Thomas as they maneuver through some corridors, pick their battle parties, and discuss whether this is a worthy successor to the Final Fantasy name.Music used in this issue:1. Final Fantasy XIII is a weirdly personal game for something so meh. To explain why I need to rewind many years before the game released. Back in 1984 when I was 2 my father passed away. So my mom and I became an inseparable duo. In the 90s I got into Final Fantasy and my mom loved that because of all the reading, so she would “play” them with me starting from 6. By the time this came out I was living on my own but my mom was practically a neighbor to me. When we say FF XIII we were mind blown of the graphics and of course preordered the game. I had requested days off and so did she. Well unfortunately, she had multiple heart attacks and passed away one week before the game came out. My mom was everything to me and I felt lost without her. Needless to say when I finally got my copy it was hard for me start the game. But start it I did and I was bound and determined to enjoy it for both of us. I know my mom would have loved the bad ass, cold as ice Lightning and would have been right there with me with my hatred of Hope. And yes I am aware most of the game is a hallway and the game has many problems with its trappings for the story. But to me, I like Final Fantasy XIII. Just like the characters I felt lost with a focus I could barely understand but I’m still here trying to live up to the memory of my parents. When faced with such extreme grief it takes a community and this game exemplifies that. They start of so broken that they hate each other but when they open up to each other they overcome their problems and that speaks to me. I don’t think I would recommend this game to most people but to me it is a special game in my heart. Great job on the podcast guys! Edit: I just started another play through on my old fat boy PS3 yesterday and can confirm that yes, even in the year of our Luigi 2026 this game still looks gorgeous.

FFXIII was my second FF game after VII and came at a time when a bad relationship was ending for me. I often used my 360 to escape/ignore the problems and due to the time required, i fully invested myself much to the chagrin of the ex. I'm not a life long FF fan nor am i knowledgeable regarding the typical character roles for RPG's but I enjoyed the somewhat tactical shifts during battles, the linear gameplay and of course the gorgeous graphics. The story though...oh boy! WTF are the fal'Cie, l'Cie, Pulse, Cocoon etc as mentioned in the pod. I 100% thought I was stupid so I'm please the other members struggled also. I recently bought it again for my One X and it still looks beautiful and I still enjoyed playing it but i don't have the time or desire to see it through to the finish. Great episode of the pod with a game which hold a weirdly specific point in my life

Measured, insightful and interesting throughout. Lea did a very good job of structuring discussion points and keeping it flowing

After mainly positive opinions on the 7,8,9 and 10 episodes it was interesting to hear the difference with 13. I bounced off this game hard when I played it but as always really enjoyed this episode.
