Join Josh, Brian, Rich and Tony as they attempt to ascend treacherous peaks of a mysterious mountain while also discovering a bit about themselves along the way. In this issue we discuss how a game began as a simple test of platforming prowess, then evolved into an examination of mental health through game design allegory, which would ultimately lead one of the developers to a deeply profound revelation about their identity. Alongside this, we discuss how the themes and imagery of the game spoke to our experiences. All this and more, as we cover Maddy Thorson and Noel Berry’s 2018 2D platforming adventure, Celeste.Music featured in this issue:1. First Steps by Lena Raine2. Been looking forward to this one! Slight side note - I’ve had some minor audio glitches so far (I’m only about 8 mins in)?

Yeah I'm hearing a lot of weird cuts during speaking also

Cane and Rinse

Apologies, folks - we're looking into this. Watch this space.

Okay, we've re-uploaded the audio file. This one should be issue free - sorry about that folks!

Thanks for fixing it so quickly!!

I found this one a bit too much of a therapy session, but then again I’m a heartless bastard! Still a fun listen nonetheless.

The gang did an excellent job covering this unique game! I spent hundreds of hours with Celeste, getting all the crystal hearts and cassettes, and the DLC, and then when I was about ten screens from the end of the very last part of the DLC, I found myself replaying one screen so many dozens of times that I noticed I wasn’t having fun anymore and put the game down permanently. And then, when I listened to this episode, I realized I had forgotten there were assist modes I could’ve tried! This episode inspired me now to go back and drag myself over the finish line, even if I need to turn on assists, just to see the final ending. On another note, as a clinician who specializes in treating anxiety disorders, I feel that Celeste does a great job of not just capturing the experience of having anxiety—as the team so eloquently described—but also providing a great description of what successful treatment or healing entails: not vanquishing negative thoughts and emotions, but rather learning to accept and embrace them. Leon, I seem to remember you once saying this game wasn’t your cup of tea, or am I confabulating that? If the former, I’m curious why it didn’t click with you.

It was kind of like the time glitches in Oxenfree. :-)
