Eight years on from our original Streets of Rage trilogy podcast, we are finally able to bring you the sequel. Daring revivalist developers Lizardcube and Guard Crush Games, under the publisher umbrella of retro specialists Dotemu, brought us the long awaited Streets of Rage 4 in 2020. Leon, Brian, Michiel and community correspondents head out once again to tear up the seedy sidewalks of Wood Oak City and beyond.Music featured in this issue:1. Double Divas by Motohiro Kawashima2. Streets of Rage 2 is probably the game I hold the fondest memories of in my gaming life. I could not tell you how many hours of our lives my younger brother and I spent replaying that game on co-op. We would pee ourselves with juvenile laughter at the end of a cleared section if we could time it just right for one of us to suddenly turn on the other and batter them with a lead pipe or throw a knife into the others back just before it froze and faded to black. I played 2 before 1 and by the time I did, the original felt and looked too basic so I didn’t give it much time. It kind of still baffles me those two games came out on the same system such is the leap. I had no idea Streets of Rage 3 existed until a few years ago and wasn’t overwhelmed when I finally played it on the Mega Drive Mini. Hearing a “fan” official game was on its way prickled my interest but when I saw the cell-shaded graphics in early trailers and what looked like a complex combo system I felt worried they were straying too far from what made 2 so approachable. However, reviews came in, they were positive so I lept in and bought the game for my Nintendo Switch. I have to say it’s an absolute joy to play with so much of 2’s fun factor. The little switch controllers I found aren’t the best for frantic brawlers so I bought a Hori Arcade Stick Mini and it has transformed the experience for the better. I remember previous CaR podcasts referencing the “weight” and “crunch” behind the combat of brawler games and I feel they struck it right here. My personal complement to this game would be that I’ve played plenty brawlers in my time and even the best have met with the “That was good, but not as good as Streets of Rage 2”. That is not the case here and it stands toe to toe. Saying that, my heart will always belong to 2.

My personal favourite game of 2020! One very minor gripe of mine is how the Classic Soundtrack mode doesn't feature any of the Mega Drive Streets of Rage 1 music (it uses the 8-bit versions instead). Feels like a missed opportunity not to have featured some of Koshiro's best work. Also, I'm definitely stealing the phrase "street meat" from Brian.

Nice! Listening to this with the soundtrack on in the background 👌

Really enjoyed this one, and I’ve just installed the Xbox version on my new Series X for an excuse to start from scratch after listening! If you had replica Cane and Rinse kits, I’d definitely have Brian’s name on the back. He’s on a roll at the moment!
